I don't like Irish politics either but I like Nick and this is a good episode I think.
My girlfriend has got her tree back to 1565 and is overly excited ![]() Quote:

How have you managed that? I've just started mine and the (very well known) site I use only goes as far back as the 1841 census, and the BMD records prior to that don't give much detail. Was it good old fashioned leg work and library/county records?
If you need help, let me know offline...(not soliciting for business, happy to help free of charge...send me a PM with your e-mail) |

Well this is a bit different, fascinating and sad. I've never heard of Nitin Ganatra before, gathered that he is in Eastenders. Interesting episode.

Wanted to hear more of how a child marriage worked.
Nitin looked like he was going to have a moment looking at his Grandad's photo earlier. |

It is really interesting, although I find it slightly odd that he didn't know about what happened in Kenya, thought it was quite a well known thing, I certainly knew, and I've no connection with Kenya at all (and am about the same age as Nitan)
That scene with his Aunt finding out about the 8 children who died was so sad |

I liked the villagers laughing at what seemed a familiar tale 'came back from Africa with a load of money, then the whole family left'

Never having heard of the guy I was half a mind not to watch. Very pleased that I did. I thought it fascinating especially when the Holy men came up with the lists of his family going back 200 years, and his name was the last one there.
It was sad that all the children died, but interesting to hear the woman's view of why she thought the children may not have been in the best of health in any event. |

Very touching episode, I thought. Excellent. The section with his aunt was incredibly moving.

Did the old guy in India imply he knew his great grandfather he left in 1890 or that's what I assumed he'd need to be about 130 to have known him.

Don't watch Eastenders, so knew nothing about tonight's subject. But it was excellent - I learned a lot, and he came across as a very nice guy. I couldn't have told you where Gujarat was before tonight, although I have wondered what that big floret bulging out of western India was called. Good stuff.

From the most boring episodes last week, to one of the most engrossing ones this week.
Fascinating stuff....and I loved that Village, past the water tower. |

Why did the family leave Kenya for Coventry? This hasn't been explained yet (I'm watching now on iPlayer)
Edit: been explained now. Seems they were kicked out by the native Kenyan government. |

I watched it on the i-player, and I put the subtitles on.
Whenever he was speaking to the locals in India, the subtitles said "THEY SPEAK IN HINDI" even though (a) the writing in the documents they were studying was all in Gujurati, (b) the road signs were all in Gujurati, (c) the location filming was almost all in Gujurat. I even recognised the words "mara dada" ("my grandfather") as being not what it would have been in Hindi. It was only the last few minutes in Mathura where there was any Hindi. |

WDYTYA is my favourite programme on television.......I cannot wait each year to see who is going to be featured.....
I also record the past series, and am sitting here at the moment......having just watched Nitin Ganatra.......and watching Robin Gibb..... I had to find this forum to say how much I really enjoyed Nitin's history........I don't usually openly cry, but I did........where his Grandfather lived.........to the right, just past the water tower.......seems an idyll of peace.........and so colourful, the ladies in their bright coloured saris........I bet Nitin and his family will be making more return visits to India...... .......and even though I liked Nitin in character, as Masood.......he really shows himself to be the most kind, caring and delightful human being.......I am left wishing the programme had been two hours long......like other FMs left needing to know a bit more...... |

He must have known about the Kenyan Asians and why they left. It's quite well known (I'm about the same age too)

Was a very interesting one some times the ones set in India get a bit "worthy". Meera Syal's comment : "I get a feeling I'm going to be looking at lots of black and white photos of men with beards" |

It gets a bit John Craven's Newsround in the way it explains History, yeah we're not all 12 you know. The narrator put on his best incredulous voice to relate the story of the railway.
We all know Britain's rape of its Empire was evil and nasty, bad, VERY BAD Britain building and funding massive transport, irrigation and Communication infrastructures in backward countries that didn't have two doo dahs to rub together. We are all suitably ashamed BBC..... OK Ooooo, spooky, post 666. |
