Have to say I turned off before the end. I had the feeling that Tamsin knew much of this before the show. They do seem to be struggling and the concentration on only one ancestral line is making the shows drag. Brendan next week should be OK. I did read about it in a magazine and it is big bad UK killing Irish again.

Actually, some of the Internment Camp footage shown wasn't even the Isle of Man. It was of the Huyton Alien Internment Camp just outside Liverpool which was contained in the housing estate up the road from where I live now. Heres a link if anyones interested

This was the worst of any series so far. It all seemed so set up. I know it is but it usual for the "victim" to be a little surprised at least..

This series has been pretty boring so far, nobody has grabbed my attention yet. As has been said, the Internment camps on the Isle of Man has been done before with David Badiel. Tamzin seemed to know all of her family history, having visited Barga and her family in Durham as a child. I was surprised that 2% of Scots have Italian ancestry.

Wicked British being nasty again! Fancy interning enemy aliens during wartime - I'm sure the Italians were being supernice to any Brits living in Italy during WWII - especially if they were Jewish.
I can understand someone not knowing about internment, but Tamsin seemed unaware that Italy were our enemies during WWI - surely you wouldn't be that ignorant if you were of Italian descent? |

Yes, I thought that was very strange too. Surely she would have known what part her Italian ancesters played in WW2.

A lot of people just don't talk about the war so it does not surprise me. Also I know from my own experience that I when I started researching my own family history I found many quite major things that I was just completely unaware. I have spoken to others who know very little about even their Grandparents - I never met one of my own Grandmothers and did not even know who she was (she did not die until the late 1970s).

Knowing about internment and which countries were on Hitler's side is just general history knowledge surely, regardless of any personal ancestral links to it.

I think this as well. Adelmo was an interesting character, but what about other members of her family ? Same with Julie Walter's story, it was so slow featuring one Irish ancestor stretched out to fill an hour. Previous series have been so much better, where they covered people from both the maternal and paternal sides of a celeb's family.
If they focus on one story in a family from the relatively recent past, then it has to, for me, to be an absolutely fascinating story, Kim Cattrall's was an absolute prime example, a fascinating stonker of a story with many participants still being alive. |

This has to be one of the most offensive programmes that I have seen for some time. It was literally shocking - Outhwaite's reaction at being told that Italy was on the enemy side in WW2 was the starting point. That isn't a minor detail, it's fundamental to understanding of the treatment of foreign nationals from enemy states in time of war.
Her moral indignation was based on appalling ignorance and the perjorative use of the term 'concentration camp' by her grandmother was awful. No matter what the literal definition of the term as a result of the Nazi Holocaust it is forever synonymous with death camps. Some Irish people also use the term to attack British internment camps during the 'troubles'. Her outrage was that her family were 'supposed' threats to Britain. They were enemy aliens and there simply wasn't time in a time of war to sift through and judge every person for risk. Even so any spies or other hostile persons would easily hide in such chaos. Chances could not be taken. Every opportunity to overdramatise this was used and shots of Outhwaite's ignorant outrage were totally offensive. This series has had some fascinating historical content. Sadly this time it was hysterical. |

There are other ways to gain knowledge than what people talk about.
The quote and context of the reply is all there, without you editing out the rest of the post to remove the context just to make your own point. On the general/war knowledge point Lundavra already replied to another FM about that. Quote:

Same here, the story did not grab my interest at all. The one ancestor story line i a mistake, I like to see how they find people as much as anything else, how they lived and where they lived.

That would not make me tune in. Cannot stand the man.
