Whoever is looking for their ancestors it’s always an absorbing programme to watch.

Not ever meeting your grandparents and not knowing their names is incredible. To hear her grandmother had been proud of her was as endearing and as lovely as Una herself.

Interesting first show on Una Stubbs. Usually only 6 celebs feature altogether, but it seems to differ each series.

Film and TV actor Nigel Havers is next week.

And the others featured in series 10 (2013) are:

- Gary Lineker (ex-footballer/Match of The Day host)

- Lesley Sharpe - (actress)

- Nick Hewer - (current Countdown host)

- Sarah Millican - (comedienne)

- Nitin Ganatra - (plays Masood in EastEnders)

- Minnie Driver - (film/TV actress)

- John Cody Fidler-Simpson - (BBC News Foreign Correspondent/Journalist)

- Marianne Faithfull (singer/songwriter/actress)

A lot of the qualities that Una possesses - class (irrespective of "class"), unique-style, manners, charm - are missing or dying out today: perhaps this is why many seem to find them odd/irritating.

I did miss Mark Strong's narration though.
I seem to remember the first series was narrated by David Morrissey - but Mark Strong sounds very like him.
They obviously decided on a radical change with Cheri! Presumably Mark wasn't available this series.
Although I've watched all the series it occurred to me that I didn't know who Mark Strong is, so I looked him up on IMDB. Although he has done a lot of stuff I didn't recognise him.

Anyway what I did notice - it credits him as being the narrator for this episode and Nigel Havers episode ? So maybe he started but couldn't continue and then they replaced with Cheri.

I enjoyed this episode.

I agree. All the more reason to like and respect her in my eyes. I think a lot of people pre-judge and presume that such qualities are "put on" nowadays. Una Stubbs has always been the same....lets face it, all the years shes been in showbiz, Ive never heard anyone ever say a bad word to say about her. I thought she showed great warmth and humility, often missing in "stars", little things like when finding out her grandma was secretly proud of her which made her cry...and when the man was taking her to see the workhouse and she linked his arm walking along the road. Her family and friends must love her to bits.

Ooooh Marianne Faithfull. That should be very interesting. She's a fascinating woman.

One thing that stuck me about this though is, why have these people never thought to ask any of this themselves? Particularly when there is a big black hole in their past? Saying to camera, I've always wondered what happened, when you've had years to look seems odd.

Because there's no publicity in it and they wouldn't get paid if they had to do it themselves.

I never knew anything about one of my Grandmothers because my Grandparents split in the early 1920s, I did not even know she existed until perhaps ten years ago.

Are there not things you've wondered about in your family and not asked or sought to find out? Others in the family may not know or care, the programme provides the facility to find out.

The programme indicated Una was not a computer user, whereas her sister was. We are all different.

It happens very often, some have no idea where to start looking, some are not interested and many have completely incorrect ideas about their ancestors.

Be funny if her family turn out to have a connection with the makers of Mars bars.

I must be dense, cos I don't see any of that. She just acts like a lot of people on this programme do when they find things out about their past, when it gets a bit emotional!
I agree, I think she just shows her emotions. She must have wondered about her paternal Grandparents for years and suddenly finds out about them.

I thought it was a really interesting story and quite sad that she never knew her paternal grandparents. What an amazing maternal great great grandfather she had as well. I thought he was going to have been from 'the top drawer' but to have such vision and not have money and position to back it up was a fantastic achievement.
Would have been a nice touch if they could have tracked down a copy of his book and got someone from a Letchworth or Welwyn organisation to present it to her.

abebooks

Would have added quite a lot to their budget! There are lots of cheaper newer editions, though.

I struggled to follow this episode but that was probably because I was at my mums, missed the start and my brothers were wandering in and out. Una seems lovely but I must confess I didn't like the female narrator. I hope they bring back Mark Strong or find another distinctive male voice.

It doesn't always help if you ask family as I had been doing my family history for many years and was always asking my Mum stuff.
It wasn't until 3 months after she died that I discovered a really devastating thing which had happened to close family. For some reason she had never said a word

I thought Una was absolutely adorable. Really lovely. I had a tear in my eye when her cousin told her that her grandmother had been really proud of her. And two great stories, Annie's tough start, marrying the boy across the road and watching on TV her famous granddaughter she'd never been allowed to know; and the creation of the Garden Cities and her campaigning grandfather.

I think a lot of us absorb certain family rules from our parents - if it's our parent's family and they don't talk about them, we accept from an early age that the subject is off limits, and it's often only long after they're dead that we question it. I'd go on the principle that if my parents or grandparents don't want to talk about something I should respect that.

Something similar happened to me. If you're a baby boomer (as I am), people didn't talk about their past and certainly nothing that may have been considered 'shameful'. My mum had confided something to my sister and neither of them ever told me. I was quite hurt at the time (and my sister still won't discuss it with me) but I understand now why they kept it to themselves. I would like to research my family tree but my sister thinks it's best to leave 'skeletons' in the cupboard.

I agree. I thought she was charming. Obviously she's picked up expressions and mannerisms throughout her career but that doesn't make it affected. She seemed genuinely touched, thrilled, excited and proud throughout. And what's more I thinks she has great personal style, quite 1920s.

I must say though I was shocked not to hear Mark Strong's voice doing the narration. It really took away from my enjoyment, not hearing his solemn, velvety tones.

My advice would be to ignore your sister and start researching - you'll find out all kinds of fascinating things about your ancestors. You can always keep certain things to yourself if you think your family will be upset by them.
