I refuse to watch any programme that features someone called Paul Hollywood, even in the unlikely event that it's actually his real name.

lol Even Sandy wouldn't be caught dead in that polo neck. She has no neck for a start.

Just because he is currently topical again - philandering Scouse who, er, wants to have his cake and eat it

Or cakes in his case.

The post-runner great-great-grandfather made Paul Hollywood look trivial and conceited. Oh, wait...

I don't think that they must have got very far in tracing his family history and had to pad it out.

I hope that this is the case and not a terrible new format.

I wonder if it's a (rather naff) 'stage name'?

Exactly.

Presumably Hollywood is his father's name? It does exist outside showbiz, there was a Southampton footballer in the 60s. He was looking into his mother's roots.

According to this website it's an Anglo-Saxon name.

It is his real name, we looked it up on ancestry.com after reading the comments on here as I was doing some research for my m-i-l as well.

He's from my town. Yes, its the family name. There's a town called Hollywood in N Ireland. i assumed there was some sort of connection there.

Yes, running 120 miles a week for 10 years, carrying 30,000 pieces of mail on his back to remote areas, from one mountainous side of Scotland to the other.

Paul pats his stomach and says...... it's in the genes!

Good episode though, enjoyed it.

I feel bad for finding the first half about his grandfather a bit boring. He was obviously a brave man who endured a lot during WW11 but Paul could easily have found out all of that by himself. Discovering that his great great grandfather though was a post runner was unique, remarkable and very interesting.
There are some interesting people coming up in the next few weeks though so hopefully things will improve.

I know what you mean about WW!! stuff. I have the greatest admiration for them and all but it is somewhat repetitive. The bent copper and the post runner were way more interesting but I suppose with Paul having actually known his grandfather it probably meant more to him.

Actually it is the more "mundane" social history that comes out in these programmes that I find more interesting.

Holly was an import resource in medieval times - the upper branches dont have spikes on and would be cut and fed to livestock. So holly would often be used in place names and then to the people who lived there. Hollin and its related names also come from holly.

I don't mind WWII. My knowledge of the North Africa and Italy campaigns was confined to Spike Milligan's memoirs, and it is good to see it from a different angle, specially when you have experts explaining it on the ground.

It was also nice to get some shots of the beautiful Tunisian countryside, contrasting of course with the hellish conditions of battle back in 1942.

It was a rather important period in British (and world) history. Many people have Grandparents who served in WWII and are beginning to wonder what they did. I would not say they have an obsession - what period do you think they should cover more?

Very bored so far and missing the old format from the Jeremy Paxman days.
Oh,good the second half is more interesting.”

Many people knew their Grandparents but knew little about what they did, many don't even know much about their parents.

So you do not believe in the concept of Who Do You Think You Are even though it is a very popular series and has been copied all over the world?

They were lucky having two generations with plenty of records. They could quite likely go back a couple more but just names, unlikely very little about the people other than a name.

They don't seem to often get into origins of surnames, they rarely tell you much and there are often several different theories. His name just appears to tell you that an ancestor might have lived somewhere near a group of holly trees.

I saw that one too. However it shows that it's not a pretentious stage name as someone suggested, it's far, far older than the place in California.
