Enjoyed that. Less about history but really lovely. Especially his grandad watching his grandad.

Gareth was genuinely interested so made everything he found out that much more interesting. He's always gold whenever he's on tv so it was lovely to see how far back his musical heritage took him.

His enthusiasm jumped through the screen. I am not familiar with him at all (never heard of him tbh) so for me this was like watching a show about a member of the public. Very good, made all the better by Gareth's genuine interest.

His Grandfather watching his Grandfather segment was wonderful.

One of my favourites this series. I think as said above it was the enthusiasm he had for every piece of information. I'd not seen much of Gareth Malone on TV before and assumed he was quite "straight", but he came across a really nice down to earth guy.

It is worth watching a couple of his previous programmes, he has an ability to get the most unlikely people enthusiastically involved in singing in a choir.

Found last night's episode very interesting. When they showed the picture of the illustrious ancestor's music hall I thought to myself 'ooh that must be the Olympia'. What a great thing to be able to stand on a working stage and have that family link.

The scene with Gareth and his father singing around the piano made me chuckle, it was like a Harry Enfield sketch. They all seemed lovely though.

I enjoyed this episode & to find out he was the founder of the Olympia was a really nice surprise. When my husband was in a band in Dublin, he performed at the Olympia.

I've liked all this series but Gareth's is my favourite so far. Loved the bit with his grandad watching the movie and him singing with his dad

I've enjoyed this series more than the last two. Probably because they've dug further, rather than concentrate on one particular ancestor. The thing that amazes me is- where do they dig up all those personal letters, notices, and ephemera? I bet there's nothing up in Lancashire or Staffordshire relevant to my lot!

It is surprising what is around when you start looking, last month I found in the British Newspaper Archive eleven letters sent by my Great Grandfather whilst serving in the Crimean War and then India.

I agree: my g-g-father was a City of London policeman, and I found a site that had a referencer to him giving evidence at the Old Bailey

You'd be very surprised what research into your family can yield. My grandma used to tell me stories of her family when I was little that I thought she made up. I started researching based on what she told me about 20 years ago and I found that her great grandfather was an actor who toured the country with his wife and six children - not only were her stories true, they were just the tip of the iceberg.

I started a blog about my research just over a year ago and have had 19,000 visits so far. I was in touch with Sarah Millican last year when, in her programme, it showed how her ancestor, a Victorian diver, brought up my ancestor's box of theatrical costumes when he drowned on the Pegasus in 1843. Every family has its story to tell and I haven't yet found one that isn't fascinating.

Some say to ignore family stories but there are usually elements of truth in them. I was told that my Grandmother's family had gone to Canada, someone was killed so they returned and she had to bring up her siblings. It turned out that her Grandparents met and married in Canada when he was serving in the Army, returned to England, he went to Ireland with the regiment where he died. Then my Grandmother's parents died relatively young leaving her, at 17, as head of the household with seven siblings. So bits of the story were true, just mixed up.

There are other stories that have elements of truth but many other quite major happenings of which no one in the family knew anything.

It is also very important to never give up trying to trace your family history if you fall at the first hurdle. I started visiting my mother's 'family homestead' as they called it in Ireland back in 2006 after finding evidence of a family secret and following the 'stories'. Many times I have hit a blank wall but got up and carried on with the help of new found cousins through knocking on doors and also with the help of my OH who knocked the doors with me. I'm pleased to say this year we got a great deal closer to solving the mystery. In the past I asked for help from the TV shows but after over a year of waiting they got back to say they couldn't help. So make a note of all the stories you are told and never give up. Also take notes from WDYTYA and use some of their resources
Keep researching!!!

You will also get plenty of help and advice from local Family History Societies and Family History mailing lists and message boards - as local as possible.

I found that my mother had had a sister and eventually managed to track down her family even though I initially only had her 1919 Birth Certificate. You just need to keep trying.

Thanks for the advice. It is quite exciting/frustrating at times isn't it but worth it in the end

She is very defensive of her criminal ancestor, but that was how it was in those days

I have a ggg grandfather who was sentenced to transportation in the 1840s but he was pardoned 4 years in while still being held in the UK so therefore Im not Australian!

He stole some potatoes, the filthy wretch

My thoughts too, and I really went off her in that far too bossy and full of her opinions. She said in an interview people would not like her in this programme, she is right
