Has anyone heard anything about whether there will be a new series this year? Any news of any celebrities or any filming going on?
I just thought that we would have heard something by now. |

I just thought that we would have heard something by now. The article says it will air in the autumn and the other stars in it are: pop singer Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden, actor Sir Ian McKellen, BBC newsreader Sophie Raworth, Royle Family favourite Ricky Tomlinson, actor Warwick Davis, TV presenter Liz Bonnin, comedy star Greg Davies, and Casualty’s Sunetra Sarker. |

Today's Daily Mirror (13th July) has an article about what Danny Dyer discovered about his ancestry during the new series of WDYTYA.
The article says it will air in the autumn and the other stars in it are: pop singer Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden, actor Sir Ian McKellen, BBC newsreader Sophie Raworth, Royle Family favourite Ricky Tomlinson, actor Warwick Davis, TV presenter Liz Bonnin, comedy star Greg Davies, and Casualty’s Sunetra Sarker. |

I think I watched the first and maybe the second series of this years ago but haven't watched it since
However I caught an episode on the Yesterday Channel recently and it was really good, really held my interest It was the one with Alan Carr where he discovers his great granddad was a deserter in WW1 and the change of name and relocation to another town to avoid capture |

I think one of the programmes has ever been shown outside Wales. It has a slightly different 'feel' to it compared with WDYTYA which I quite like. They don't pretend that the celebrity is researching the history themselves as they do on WDYTYA at times. |

Oh, that looks like quite a good line-up!
Definitely better than last year's. Paul Hollywood's and Jayne Seymour's are the only ones that really interested me last time outWDYTYA? has been one of my favourite shows for many a year now, but even I admit its lost its spark somewhat lately. Funnily enough, it does seem to have coincided with the loss of Mark Strong as narrator. I do struggle to take in what Cherie Lunghi says at times, her voice doesn't seem to stick with me with the history tit-bits WDYTYA? does. I do miss Mark's voice on the show, it had a certain gravitas to it. Made the information stick. Obviously the fact the show doesn't go as far back into the past with celebs now compared to what it did is an issue too, but the narrator change has been a big problem for me. ![]() Oh, and whoever said they prefer Coming Home not pretending the celeb's did the research, well I like the fact WDYTYA? does that. Makes it more personal, well to me anyway! |

The biggest problem with WDYTYA is when the celebrity is left on their own with some information and makes wild assumptions that anyone with any knowledge of family history would point out were ridiculous. |

But we all know that their family history has all been researched in advance in detail, so rather pointless when they given a register (with bookmark) and told to see if they can find their ancestor it is all just 'for television'.
The biggest problem with WDYTYA is when the celebrity is left on their own with some information and makes wild assumptions that anyone with any knowledge of family history would point out were ridiculous. History has been full of wild speculation anyway, and if a story isn't quite the one the celeb hoped for in a sense, them clinging onto a preferred story of events with many assumptions and speculation is surely better for their sake. I'd do the same if I was in their position! |

But them actually looking for it 'just for TV' actually makes it look like its a journey and adventure to find the information. If they just meet generic historian who tells them point blank your relative is x,y,z, it just doesn't do much for me.

I was watching Ricky Tomlinson on C4's 'Born On The Same Day' a few weeks back thinking he'd be a good candidate for WDYTYA - and here he is.

Problem is that there have been several cases where someone has done a classic 2 + 2 = 5 from some information and there has been no one there to correct them and it is not corrected later so many people with little knowledge of family history have been given a wrong interpretation whilst others were throwing things at the TV in disgust!
If a celeb goes with the story they prefer from what they've come to through assumptions etc with the poignant music starting as they walk off just before the credits, AND then someone comes in and goes 'Well, actually this is all wrong, this is actually what happened etc', that kills the moment, makes it flow badly and just isn't entertainment. I get people who want to do their own research might by frustrated etc, but WDYTYA? is an entertainment programme. Each journey is different and that means the same for us...there's no 'right' way as such to do things and conclude from them. |

First and foremost WDYTYA? is an entertainment show, yes a celeb documentary/reality series is probably the more correct kind of title, but it's for TV so the producers are going to make it the story for TV possible.

I was not referring to assumptions, I was talking of errors. An error is an error whether a celebrity or not.
But that's how I look at things. It's probably very different to many others... |

Has there been a delay this year? It has normally completed its run by now, yet this year's hasn't even started yet.
Does anybody know when it starts? |

I suppose there are only so many variations and ultimately, you are stuck with having to find visual representations, which become harder the further you go back. However, I have become rather disappointed with recent progs, which perhaps reached their nadir with the desperate Gary Lineker one. My own family is really rather interesting in many ways - so I find myself looking at the TV thinking "you would love my tale but I am not a celeb". That said, there are always surprises - I had my own Alistair McGowan moment and that idea that a meeting between fairly recent ancestors was so unlikely that probability rather suggests I really should have been somewhat different. That is what makes it interesting - that your ancestor was well-known fits the zeleb culture, but doesn't say much about the person.
It is a fascinating subject, but I suppose it ultimately depends on how interesting your own tree actually is. I am however surprised that no-one takes a DNA test just to see how their genetics reflect their view of themselves. With the world apparently reverting to tribal groups despite globalisation, this could be quite important. |

I saw a blog the other day by the magazine editor that the series has been held back on purpose but I can't remember a specific reason for it. It was meant to start this month as the magazine had a feature about the series.
I think it's going to be nearer Christmas from what I remember the blog saying before we see any WDYTYA? this year. Hopefully we'll see them soon. Always enjoy this show.

It's back next Thursday at 8pm starting with Danny Dyer innit followed by Amanda Holden the following week. He reckons his story is probably the best one ever made.

Cheryl (she's mislaid her surname, it seems), Liz Bonnin and Ricky Tomlinson to follow up to Christmas, then at some point in the new year Ian McKellen, Sophie Raworth, Warwick Davis, Greg Davies and Sunetra Sarker.

I can't stand either of this pair, but am interested in genealogy, so will give it a go.
The only ones I have hated have been when the subject of programme thought they knew better than the research done by the programme. |

The thought of that chav and her depressing voice ![]() As for Dyer and the rest... is that the best they could come up with. |
