Did anyone see Cheryl Cole last night?

It wasnt the most interesting but it was a bit of a farce in some ways as well because her mother said on the programme that she knew nothing about her grandad, but this wasnt true if you look at an article in the Daily Mail from 2010, she talks about the person she said last night she knew nothing about

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...rs-career.html

People are criticising Cheryl for being boring but I found it almost refreshing that she didnt go over the top like most people do on telly. Mind you, I was sitting there thinking that she was a bit stilted too.

Her OTT reactions to every disclosure was ridiculous. Using just her first name was pathetic also. She's not Cher.

She's turning into a parody of herself.

.
That's Cheryl's grandfather she's talking about in that article. It was her great grandfather she knew nothing about.

Agree with others here. Programme was a bit dull and Cheryl has a really monotone voice which doesn't help.

No, the article talks about Joans grandfather, Cheryl's great grandfather

Why doesn't she revert back to her maiden name? I realise her marital history has not been all that successful, so why doesn't she just call herself Cheryl Tweedy again? Just being 'Cheryl' seems a bit pretentious.

She is not the first artist to use a single word name and the others seem to be accepted, some people like nothing better than a good moan about her.

It's a stage name, do you complain about Sting, Prince, Madonna (surely if anything is prententious then that one is!), Rihanna, Lulu, Boneo, Adele and many, many more.

I found it had a couple of very interesting stories, certainly a lot better than the soap actor strutting around trying to be a Cockney hard man!

She said something at the start of the programme about being very private, I suspect that offstage she is possibly even a bit shy.

No, but they had their stage names from the beginning of their careers, so we were introduced to them by that name. She was Cheryl Tweedy, then Cole, then Fernandez-Versini. In the end, she can call herself Molly-Anne PIss-Bollocks for all I care - but adopting 'Cheryl' at this stage just seems like a pretentious affectation.

It was an interesting story but she has a rather boring speaking voice. Nothing to do with being from the north-east though.

Right. So you'd just sit there non-plussed as if you already knew it all?

...but adopting 'Cheryl' at this stage just seems like a pretentious affectation.
Or because it's far easier than an ever-changing surname.

But then again, most people don't worry about common sense and logic when they're having a go at someone they don't like.

Going back to her original name seems fairly logical and commonsensical to me - but suit yourself...

Well I quite enjoyed it.

I am not familiar with her at all, so had no preconceived idea what to expect.

Thought she came across quite well.

Fair enough, but there's only one Cher, and only one madonna, except for the biblical one
but there are plenty of Cheryls about

I am sure many others have changed their names at various points in their career, Prince famously even became a symbol.

So if she also shortened her name, to Chery, then it would be OK? Many of the other singers with one word names don't use their first name but don't see that it matters.

I couldn't see that in the article, just saw the bit about Joan's father
Joan is one of four girls born to Joseph and Olga Callaghan, both now dead. She was raised with Denise, Ann, Judith and Lynn in Byker, the working class area of Newcastle where all of her siblings still live.

Her home life was far from happy. Cheryl says that grandad Joseph was an alcoholic: ‘I would always see him staggering home from the pub, *absolutely p***** on Strongbow. It affected his kidneys and his mind. He was losing it towards the end, all through alcohol.’

I thought Lisa Bonnin was dull, dull, dull and just an excuse for a jolly at the BBC's expense. Didn't watch Cheryl Surname because I don't give a toss about where she came from. I quite enjoyed the Danny Dyer episode though, in spite of seeing his struggle to walk in clothes nicked off a 14-year-old's washing line.

I'm not sure she's ever used Cheryl F-V as a public name, she was releasing music as Cheryl back in 2012 with her third album.

I didn't expect to find the former Miss Tweedy interesting, but she came across really, really well. She seemed to have an underlying sadness and I hadn't realised just how startlingly beautiful she is close-up.

snipped

I agree ^ I saw the Amanda Holden programme the previous week and that was the pits. All the over-emoting , "oh my gods" and try too hard glamour.
Cheryl, as dull as she may be, was less grating. Plus she wasn't claiming to be smart- was upfront that she didn't know much about basic history.

As for stilted, agree with you - is the bad press getting to her?

Will take the thread's tip and check out the Liz Bonin one on catch -up.

I though Cheryl came across really well, and the programme was interesting. I'm surprised that Cheryl's mum had no known foreign ancestry, despite being very dark.
