I think you're over analysing things, it's not too bad.

Agreed, during BB12 it was unbearable at times. It's much better now and it seems to be much busier too. I remember during BB13 it would drop to just 7-8 pages of threads and now it's double that.

The moderators do clamp down on racism and homophobia, and will stop pure name-calling in time. There are worse forums.

As a matter of fact, there are worse forums on digitalspy. The politics forum (and to a lesser extent, the General Discussion forum ) seems to be full of very, very angry people who will explode with rage if you cross them; and it is much less strictly moderated than this one. If you are feeling sensitive, don't go there if a woman has been accused of faking a rape allegation, or if an immigrant is accused of any crime at all; and never, ever admit to feeling sorry for the McCann parents if you value your sanity. I do though, as all decent people do.”

I agree with that. I don't view the Politics forum much but there are always people in General Discussion ready to go on the attack for no real reason. You don't even have to cross them to be attacked. Merely expressing an opinion is enough for some of them to unleash the rage.
Funnily enough, the received wisdom in the General Discussion forum is that the BB forum is a vicious and terrifying place not to be ventured into. Yet I have always thought that it is relatively peaceful and one is less likely to be attacked there (I mean here!).

Yeah. I know. It's a forum and that's fine ... but what does the level of nastiness within its pages say about our lives, our culture or our world?

The public, you and I, apparently wished to send one housemate a sobering message yesterday and the producers obliged ... and gave that housemate a series of cruel and humiliating tasks to perform ... for our viewing pleasure. (Including dressing up in a snake costume).

I had thought this years show was brilliant ... and the ratings have kind of echoed my sentiment ... so why do I feel so uncomfortable with what I have witnessed this evening?”

Bless.

It isn't always pleasant to read.

Some people will act far differently when anonymous, so forums let you be privy to thoughts which otherwise would be censored. People can let off steam and be rude and controversial because you don't know them.

Lots of people are also very nice, but they might be overlooked.

It could be far worse though. I only occasionally dream about shutting off humanity and living in a cave in the mountains.

I don't want to stereotype but it increases more and more with the new and young posters that wanna make their presence known. Sorry but it does point that way. I find younger fans of hms are more.... what's the word ....obsessive, and won't have any opinion aired other than the one they agree with. If not your in for a tirade unfortunately. That's not everyone may I add.

Ha ha. Thanks people. An excellent batch of comments and replies. Thank you for taking the time.

Now ... ]Your First Task

Could I ask a favour? Could one of you mail me with a simple, straightforward list of commands to enable me to multi quote posters comments? I'm sure it is just a couple of clicks but I'm unfamiliar with the format so a little help would be appreciated.

The best, most simple explanation will win ... my admiration and thanks

I'm up the wooden hill to bed now and look forward to uncovering the mystery of multi quoting on the morrow.

I think I might like it here.

Almost everyone I know in RL thinks BB is a very crude, low rent, nasty, ugly kind of show. It is a closely guarded secret that I watch it! This year seemed like a jolly-nice practical joke to begin with. I was pleasantly surprised that the "actor" trick was going to encourage some interesting psychology. But, lately, I am back to finding major things that don't sit well with me. It is a test of how much I can tolerate this feeling of unease. Once you have invested your time in the series, you don't want to give up on it. Certainly if it had started out this way, I probably would have given it a miss.

Michelle Gayle was on BBBOTs tonight. This is a woman I have previously thought well-rounded. Michelle Gayle won't let me down -- voice of reason, coming up! Yet her take on one or two things left me very worried! I want to enjoy the show safe in the knowledge that the viewers are mostly maintaining a healthy perspective when it matters. But these days the average perspective seems far removed from mine. I don't mean opinions on various HMs, but just concepts about morality/acceptability and such like.

The forum can never prove that disappointing to me because I have low expectations. I moderate somewhere else, somewhere heaps worse: not BB related. So this isn't that bad. Polarised, yes, a bit scatty here and there, but at least it isn't too personal because the HMs get most of the real venom.

The show is ok, but BOTS is a pile of steaming dung. not fit to grace the bottom of my shoe.

Tonights main show was slightly weird though...certainly made me question why I watch..

It always gets worse.

I think the average IQ of a lot of the users on this section is about 69.

All they do is resort to comments about HM's appearance, their weight and just being as nasty as they claim the HM's they're ripping to shreds are.

I think a lot of it has to do with BB Producers meddling a lot with the format, the HM's etc. I think I must be the only one on this forum who would love to go back to the original BB format (that being BB 1) where it was an experiment to see how 13 or 14 people get on locked up for a couple of months or so. For me THAT'S entertaining because it's REAL LIFE. So what if we get the odd boring series that's life. As I said earlier if you take away the Dazel incident which should never have happened anyway & took away the 'love triangle' that is just ridiculous as well then what have you got as a highlight of this series & that's WITH BB meddling?

Multi-quote is to the right of quote. Click it till your final quote, when you just click quote. It should work ok.

Ahh OP I was also quite shocked by the general negativity of SOME people here when I first joined but I kinda got used to it.

Anyway, I definitely agree with you though. It can be a little unpleasant at times but I think that's because people are very passionate about their views. BB is amazing though as not many shows can create such opinions and divides. People just need to remember that this should a fun and entertaining show and not to take it too seriously because if you go with it and appreciate the show, I find that you enjoy it a lot more. This place is great for sharing views though.

that incident predictably brought out the worse in a lot of people

I noted many long standing members attempting to dampen or neutralize some of the most hateful comments but also witnessed many other Digital Spy lifers using the Dazel storyline as a vehicle to vent rage and anger in a totally over the top manner, ironically using the most crude, disrespectful and offensive language to present their own alleged moral high ground perspective.
just turn blind eye to those posts - there's plenty of more readable/pleasant ones with a point to put you can read instead

Yeah. I know. It's a forum and that's fine ... but what does the level of nastiness within its pages say about our lives, our culture or our world?
don't take it all so seriously, we're commenting on a reality tv show

a lot of the posts are to wind other people up, it's playground sometimes, that's what happens in forums, and I agree that FB and Twitter can be far worse reads - and BB tasks have always humiliated, that's the intention, and Dexter was shown being gunked a few times, and Hazel didn't deserve the word 'snake' , but the events she was involved in, whether you feel rightly or wrongly warranting the public to grasp any opportunity to get their own back, certainly happened tonight.
It's no utopia, but most posts are just people with passionate views, and doing it because we enjoy the banter, and are fans of the show.

I used the word many in my text and nowhere, in my original post, did I use the word all. Rest assured, if I thought the whole BB Digital Spy community was as you claim, I would have said so.

Generalising is rarely good for debate ... and you'll learn that my particular style of posting is to offer an introductory preamble to outline a theme, perhaps ask a question or two and then invite others to discuss the topic.

My approach will not appeal to all but some members may possibly enjoy my particular take on things

Sniping or attacking a poster rather than the post has never really appealed to me but I appreciate some folk use a forum to let off steam. That's up to them though, as we are discussing, (and as others have already noted), such a policy can cause conflict on a public forum.

And yeah, I'm new here! Fascinating. It would appear, from your own seasoned point of view, that I am ripe to be misquoted or instantly dismissed.

Good luck with that.

Thanks for your comments though ... and thank you to the kind folk who mailed me with advice regarding multi quoting in a forum reply.

People are naturally judgemental and feel a primitive urge to impart justice upon those they believe to have acted wrongly. What's happening with Hazel right now is basically just the modern social equivalent of the medieval stockades.
