Okay, thanks. Useful to know

i would suggest( i think).. that most folk do have hd tellies.. so i assume the Av socket on the now tv box would be no use..

it still surprises me there is no optical socket( spif) ,on the nowtv box..
like most receivers.blue ray/sky+ have,,
the video DEMO on u tube says ,if one clicks on audio , in the now tv menu.. it shows stereo/5.1 but if no optical socket to a home cinema/amp . havnt a clue how the 5.1 would work!!!

Isn't the 5.1 audio delivered over HDMi ?

Yeah, same as the Roku LT on which the NOW TV Box is based. Dolby Digital Plus support is required I think?

well on the DEMO the audio section does say 5.1, so assume its there for a reason,, anyway I should find out this week when it arrives

It's obviously got minimal connectors to keep costs down and keep it simple. So 5.1 audio is via HDMI only (all modern home theatre systems should have HDMI audio inputs), networking is via WiFi only (no need for ethernet socket or cable) and video output is also via the included HDMI cable (who wants a nasty old composite video signal these days and the HDMI cables don't actually cost any more to make in China). At just £9.99 delivered the price of the box is being heavily subsidised by Sky so the lack of rival film subscription services on it is no surprise. I don't have any other "smart" TV equipment, just Freesat+ (BBC iplayer and ITV player) and that seems to be being ignored in favour of Freetime these days so this may make I nice little addition to my current setup for a few additional online services.

Just got mine and to answer 'the' question some have been asking,do you have to pay,or register a card to view the free content.its NO

You will have to create an account on the Now TV website,I did that, found I could log back into the site on my PC,so I knew it worked.

Had to wait a few minutes before the Now box would accept the log in,but other than that, its working, got the TWIT network on,at the moment.

Had a quick look at Pramface on the iPlayer, and the picture ratio looked just a little odd maybe?,but the TWIT podcast looks OK to me.

So yes,got it to work on the 'free content' without paying anything or even registering a card

Hi tom558. Would you be able to have a look in the Roku Channel Store and see if the Plex channel is available. Many Thanks.

Had a look, can't see Plex as yet,I would say that there are more free channels/apps on there already than the very recent video reviews.

I am getting one as it is a lot cheaper if you just want to watch your own team on Sky, just pay £9.99 for a Sky Sports Pass much cheaper than £22 a month subscription

You can watch your team for far cheaper than £9.99 a day.

Plex can be loaded and it adds DNLA streaming to the box from your network.

I had no problem with the WI-FI connection, but then I am in a small house,I did mention a strange picture ratio, above, but had not set the iPlayer to the HD option.

Its a little strange, put Mrs Browns Boys on,and it was not HD,then tried the same content on the iPlayer on my Blu-ray,that was also not HD,so maybe the BBC has some issue there.

Tried 'Live at the Apollo' and that was in HD even if 720p,but looked good,as did the other HD content on other channels/apps.

Ref the 30 days free movies, don't know if I have got it or not,not tried that yet? but they don't have my card details and I am watching the free stuff.

The leaflet at the bottom of the box has this interesting take on the ownership of firmware in purchased electronic equipment:

Quote:
“On Purchase the NOW TV Box becomes your property however the software in the NOW TV Box does not as it is owned or licensed to Sky or another member of the Sky group. You must allow Sky or its licensor Roku to update the software in the NOW TV Box by sending signals to your NOW TV Box. You must not tamper with the software in the NOW TV Box or authorise anybody else to do so.”

Their "limited warranty" appears to breach the Sale of Goods Acts in limiting it to the original purchaser.

I don't understand how a warranty from the manufacturer of a device is anything to do with the Sales of Goods Act.

The section starts

"Subject to the additional terms and conditions below, Sky provides this Limited Warranty:

* Only to the person or entity that originally purchased the NOW TV Box from Sky"

Sky are both the part-owner of Roku and in terms of this transaction, the retailer.

The TWIT network, 'This Week In Technology' is a internet television/radio/podcast station that offers choice of programmes covering, tech, mobile phones, radio, ham radio, the internet, just too much to mention, suggest you just Google the TWIT network, and have a look.

Ref your card number question, yes there is no need to enter your card details, just to see the free stuff.
As I said above, just create a new subscription on the Now TV website, and enter that, when you first log in with your Now box.

I found that I had to wait,a while,a few minutes before the box would accept the log In,but suppose that was because I had only just signed up on the site.

Other than that,no problem at all,I am watching the free stuff.

I think to get the 30 days 'free' movies I expect you would have to enter your card details, but that was not my main interest,as I am a Sky subscriber anyway,

I am a geek, and wanted a cheap streaming device, its worth a tenner for the included HDMI cable alone.

Don't forget to check out the TWIT network, and if you like what you see,get one of these boxes, then you can see that content on your TV,in HD 720p, as well as lots of other free stuff.

Yes, I have been looking into this with VPN's and all that pretend you live in another Country stuff but for simplicity and the odd big game might be easier to go the £9.99 route. I would definately pay per view at £5.00 a game but that would lose Sky a lot of subs

Just put in an order for one of these. I wasn't going to get one but I've just signed up to the Now TV deal total empire are doing. For £10 you can't go wrong.

... and?

You're still not explaining how this negates (or more accurately suggests that they are negating) your statutory rights.

I'm legally obliged to offer you A.

I've also decided to offer you Z if X and Y are true.

Also just purchased one of these bad boys, can't go wrong with £10 - plus I get a free Sky Movies Trial (turned my auto renew off though, teehee), very good if you just want to watch your own football team instead of the others.
