Dehydrating food.. Anyone do this?
I have just bought a dehydrator and right now I have strawberries and blue berries in there.
Tomorrow I'm doing courgette chips for snacking on. Anyone else have one and have any hints and tips? |

H-FW did a bit on it in his veggie series. Dehydrated kale was a sucess IIRC.
Veggie crisps are also popular. Checkout the C4 website to see if there are recipies or if you can watch the episode online. It was the one about raw food. |

I find things like dehydrators and juicers too much fuss and probably just as expensive as buying juice and dried fruits already prepared.

Backpackers and what are termed "preppers" do in the States... have a look around on Youtube - especially where 24-hr rations are discussed.

I have got one - had it about 5 years.
As I live in Spain part of the year I am able to bulk buy fruit when it is plentiful and dehydrate it then bring it back to UK in just one large lock and lock box. The beauty of it is there is no Sulphur in home dried fruit unlike lots of the stuff you find in shops. I have dried tomatoes but they take quiet a long time, have had better luck drying them in the oven. Bananas a big favourite and I do lots of them -- both in long slices and also liquidize them and pour it onto non-stick paper on the tray and dry them in one big circle then cut it up. My sons likes a selection of dried fruit for his lunch pack - he is vegan - and thinks that strawberries are amazing, so tasty. |

Also need a vacuum sealer but really get confused when looking at so many, my old one died a long time ago. Hoping to find what I need on the selling sites where people have bought things and dont use them. |

I made a big mistake when I replaced my vacuum sealer - bought one that uses rolls of plastic (which are very expensive) and thought I would use the bags I have used for years but it has to be the rolls. Now back with a cheapie sealer that came from Aldi and my usual thick plastic Lidl bags.
I keep all the dried fruit in Lock and Lock boxes - the ones that last long enough ![]() Good Luck with the dehydrating - the only trouble is eating so much of it when it is done. People do appreciate it as presents - we do swaps at the gym and the fruit goes down a treat. |
