In light of the recent news of devkit functionality on X1, when asked about mod support, Major Nelson replied "It's up to the developers".

Personally speaking I'm not such huge fan of mods but having the option for them would be great, and has the potential to enhance many titles out there.

The PS3 already supported mods in Unreal, sadly most developer ignored that so they could sell their over priced map packs so I doubt we will actually see this happen.

Personally I love mods, my favourite online games all started as mods, Team Fortress on Quake, Counterstrike on Half Life, Rats on Counterstrike, Day of Defeat on Half Life, Desert Combat (Or was it Modern Combat) on Battlefield 1942. Most of the game modes we play today grew out of the modding community. So I really hope this happens but with developer slowing support for the modding community on PC it seems unlikely this will happen unless MS get the ball rolling by allow mods on Halo. With the size of the community that game has, along with the influence it has it could allow mods take off.

Like Hotbird I don't expect to see it in many AAA titles as it conflicts with the DLC model but it would be cool for additional maps for the odd competitive shooter etc.

The best news about this is that the X1 is flexible enough to allow it, now devs (including indies) can create games that allow full mod support in the future if they so choose (Minecraft?)

The DLC model would change to textures, liveries etc for customisation.

See ModNation Racers as an example. People can make their own characters and karts so they can't sell you those, instead they sell you the bits to make them, which you need if you want to download a creation that utilises them.

So does the PS3 and I hope the PS4 The lack of MODs on the PS3 which already supported it, is not to do with the DLC model. But because it undermines the integrity of the trophy/achievement system.
