Have got a new puppy, well he's not quite 2 weeks old, so haven't got him here yet, so some thoughts on a name would be appreciated, he's a border collie, and mostly black, I know the people who have him really well, so thought they could start calling him by name? I'm trying to stay away from most obvious bc names, want something a bit different!

I dont think you can really name him until you know him. When we got our dog he already had a name (he didnt respond to it and it didnt suit him) but we had about 4 names we liked but didnt officially name him until we had him a day and picked the one that best suited his personality.

Know where you're coming from, but this is first time we've had a pup from people we know, and hes soo young, thought it would do him good to know his name?

Is there a way you could see him and see if any names suddenly seem to suit him?

I always think, picture yourself in a field calling your dog. You don't want a silly sounding name when called, or too much of a mouthful either.
How about Lake?
My dogs over the years were called Piper, Amy. Honey, Hasso,
Benji, Kheldar, Tia and my puppy is Willow.

you could go down the Jet
or Cinder route if he's mostly black

or Jack (blackjack )
Socks if he has white socks.

we have a border collie called Jake, we went to see the litter at 6 weeks with that name in mind
a gorgeous (i'd say "little" but he was the biggest pup of the litter!) pink nosed pup crawled up to my feet across the floor.
and that was that, Jake suited him down to the ground from that moment.
sod the rest of the puppies clamouring about in the barn, he chose me and i've never looked back!
(save maybe for the time he dug up all my spuds and then decided to eat my raccoon skull...)

Thanks for the suggestions, am liking Jake and Blake,
short names good for recall!

Always remember meeting a lovely dog and asking their owner what's their name, they said guess, so I did the obvious and said, rover, fly etc, long story short, that was the dogs name Guess!

I had a wonderful border collie named Jethro
. Good luck with your new puppy.
Borders take alot of training and exercise but are very smart and loyal dogs - its essential to teach him to fetch. Jethro was great with frisbees and balls!

I love names like that. We brought a horse and asked the owner what her show name was and they said Whatever You Like .. we said no we will go with the name she has with you ...and her show name was ... Whatever You Like

I also like the suggestion Deefa ... D for dog

Thanks for replies, but due to personal stuff, we 've decided not to have pup.
We're both upset, but shite happens unfortunately, feel bad, but hopefully the pup will go to a good home
