The main thing I've noticed about conversations between the 2 is that Callum just keeps talking over Sam when the latter doesn't agree with him. Usually the subject relates to Dexter/Charlie.

Callum doesn't seem to like it when someone thinks Dexter's okay. His dislike of Dexter really is completely irrational.

Maybe he's trying to be helpful, but he comes across as condescending.”

If someone realises on lip reading you do enunciate the words more to make it easier for them to read. As for speaking louder that is often when there is more noise around but when they are talking about things they don't want others to hear Callum doesn't need to talk so loud as he makes the lip reading easier.

Sophie is the worst person for Sam to follow as she mumbles, keeps her head down and her accent does not allow lip readers to follow easily

That's right.

That was one of the most pathetically patronising things an BB HM has ever said.

I remember watching it & wishing one of the HMs had told Mario he was a patronising numpty, but none of them did.

Exactly. I can't believe the spiteful comments on here because a bloke is trying to communicate the best way he can with someone who is almost deaf. Of course he coud be like the others ( and by the look of it some forum members), and not give a sh!t

And vice-versa.

Reminds me of a time I was on a flight to the USA and there were some Asian people sitting in the row in front of me, the Stewardess kept shouting loudly at them when asking if they wanted anything, as if that would help

OP did you not see the 'therapy' bit where Sam said he often feels left out of conversations because he can't hear properly and keep up with the others speech?”

This. Calum is trying to be helpful and if Sam felt patronized he would say so.

There are a lot of things I dislike about callum, but I do think he is the only one to make an effort with sam. He means well and sam has said he struggles to understand people, so he is trying to help

Sams friend said the way Callum talks to Sam is good for him and that he is glad to have him. And i guess his real world friend knows what he is talking about.

this is a really stupid thread, I mean this is really scrapping the bottom of the barrel in trying to find something to criticise Callum about.

I have a couple of deaf relatives, if they are not looking at me then I have to speak loudly and clearly otherwise they don't hear me, even if they are watching my lips I still have to speak clearer than if I was speaking to someone with good hearing, , and even when speaking loudly and clearly they still sometimes don't hear me. Often with deaf people you have to make them aware you are talking otherwise they don't realise.

If Callum is the only one doing this to Sam then this would suggest to me that that means he cares more than the other housemates.

er he is 100% right in the way her talks to Sam. Sam has said Callum is the only one he can understand all the time and he often asks Callum what is going on.

my cousin if deaf and I talk to him the sam way, he can also lip read a bit so I make sure I mouth the words better and us my hands more and face.

The comments on here

He speaks clearly so Sam can hear him, and Sam appreciates it, hence why they are very close. During the eviction, Sam kept looking at Callum to fill him in what was going on.

I've said this before in another thread, but when Calum talks to Sam it reminds me of how a lot of nurses and carers talk to elderly people. Like they are simple and not the full shilling.

I think being in the house with so many people talking at the same time must be much more difficult for Sam to filter than on a one to one - I have seen him turn to Callum on numerous occasions for assistance and Callum is considerate and takes the time to filter the many conversations for him. I also think Gina takes time with Sam also - the other HM's seem to be much more self-obsessed to spare time explaining things to Sam. Callum may seem to be exaggrating slightly but remember he is not a professional at this - he is doing his best

Great post but even better is the posters that totally ignore what Sam, SAMs friend, people here who have deaf relatives/associates just so they can spout their venom against Callum..

I agree. I think that Callum genuinely cares about Sam and is just being helpful.

I am a sign language interpreter so I work with deaf and hard of hearing people on a day to day basis and I think what Callum is doing is perfectly fine. You try and lipread all day every day, it is very tiresome. That with the background noise. it can be very difficult to understand what is going on in a large group. I think the housemates can learn a few things from Callum on how to be more inclusive.
