Watching series 1 back....
as I only started watching x-factor from series 3 onward. I think series 1 has to be the worst year for talent. Nearly every act was very karaoke. The only ones I liked really were voices with soul and even they weren`t that good!!!!

why the talent was below par i actually liked the overall format especially bootcamp.
![]() Also, it would have been nice to see them able to sing a different song for the sing-off!! |

I loved Kate as a host; I still think she is much better than Dermot - she's much more suited to a show like X Factor, whereas Dermot and his little spinning entrance can be more suited to Big Brother or whatever.
& Series 1's talent wasn't that great, but Roberta, Rowetta, VWS & G4 I thought were good. |

Thanks for the link pingu58011! I'm watching the first live show of series 1 now.
The studio seems really small and it looks like the budget for the ep was about £5 Saying that, though, it makes for a much more intimate atmosphere than the more recent series where they've had aircraft-hanger sized studios.Maybe it seems karaoke watching it now, but I think that's, in part, due to the fact that we've become used to huge, 'bells and whistles' performances, featuring everything but the kitchen sink, whereas this is just people standing on a tiny stage in front of a microphone, singing. The VTs are really short. Pity that's changed! The judges' comments are also very quickly done - again, pity that's changed! In fact, there seems to be very little padding in the first episode at all. I've bolded the contestants I thought gave good performances. Voices With Soul Verity*. Roberta Two 2 Go Steve Cassie G4 Rowetta Tabby *Crippled by nerves **Struggling with laryngitis. After watching the first performances, I'd say it's actually a pretty strong line-up. |

Another thing that's just dawned on me - there was no 'joke act' amongst the contestants who made it to the live shows in series 1.
So, overall, the first series did seem more serious about finding talent and less bothered about gimmicks and padding. |
