Hi,

I know that everyone has been asking questions on this forum about using Homechoice with a wireless router, but what about if you want to use a wired modem/router ? Is this possible?

I am have just cancelled my current contract with Tiscali(bad bad ISP! )and when my BT line is freed up, I'm thinking about switching to Homechoice. At the moment I'm using a Netgear DG384 Modem/Router, 'cos I have an Xbox as well. What I would like to do is keep the Modem/Router and connect it to Homechoice and leave the Xbox connected up to the router as well. I don't want to have to start spending more money buying a wireless router, like everyone here seems to be talking about.

Am I alone in this quest for simplicity or are there people out there who have done this?

as i understand it a modem router will not work with the homechoice stb as it is i believe it in itself has an incorporated modem.

Thanks Johnnyrocker. That's what I heard from someone else as well. They were suggesting that it might be possible to use the Netgear Modem/Router though without connecting the modem part to the ADSL line(thereby jus using the router). Is this possible?

i am not too up on routers but i do undestand that some have the facility to disable modem section and just use as a router which may well work but you would need to check with your router provider.

If your equipment won't function as just a router, then simple non-wireless routers are pretty cheap. You'll need to look for ones that are labelled as cable routers, ideally.

Thanks Zapomatic. I've been looking into this a bit more and I reckon I'm better buying a new a new router, as I can't see anyway of disconnecting the modem part of my Netgear Modem/Router. Can anyone recommend a wired router that's cheap and does the job?

Until I got an Airport Express I was happily using one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...521109-1398267 . This has wireless capability. For only a few pounds less there is the non-wireless version: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...521109-1398267 . People seem to have had a good deal of success with Linksys routers and the HomeChoice box. They're cheap and they work well, but they are rather ugly!

Some of these are cheaper at eBuyer and they have their own brand one for £15.27 though you'll need to add postage to their prices.

Londonspod, I have the Netgear 834G and I can't get it to work wirelessly with Homechoice. I can however get it to share the internet connection by connecting with ethernet ports. Why it can do wired but not wireless I do not know, I have had to fork out another 50quid for a wireless router that doesn't have an integrated modem.

Thanks for the warning pobrien, I went and bought the wired Linksys router(without the modem)as this seems to be the one people are recommending. I decided I didn't wanna go wireless ages ago as it don't bother me.
