My cat, Humphrey went missing on Friday evening but as he's in and out at his whim I didn't really notice until Saturday afternoon. He's a roamer and a hunter and has been known to disappear for up to 24 hours so I wasn't too concerned when I hadn't seen him for a while.

I've been out looking for him, asked everyone I met if they'd seen him, registered his details with the UK Missing Pet Register and a Facebook group and tomorrow I'll be able to make up some posters at work. I'm also going to call the council to see if anyone reported finding a dead cat.

It occurred to me that if someone ran him over and took him to the local vets (who were closed when I called) would the vets carry out any emergency surgery if the person who brought him in wasn't prepared to pay or would they simply euthanize him? It's haunting me that he might have been taken to the vets but as he's not micro chipped they didn't know to contact me and so had to put him down when I would happily have paid every penny I have to save him.

I'm sorry but why isn't he microchipped? Not only would it mean he could be scanned and reunited with you, but also if someone had "adopted" him, you'd have proof he was yours.

Apologies if it sounds harsh, but I just don't know why you wouldn't have had him chipped.

The vets would treat any injured animal who could be saved I'm sure.

I hope he comes home soon

Hopefully he's just got himself shut in a shed/garage for the weekend and will be back soon.
Sadly if he has been run over its quite likely the driver didn't even realise and I doubt a non-cat owner would think to pick up a corpse to ID it

Anyway fingers crossed he turns up safe and well - you'll know now to get him chipped - and so will all the other non-chipped cat keepers out there!

Hi Hope your cat comes back soon. We have just gone through this. Our cat went missing for a week. . Like you we were worried sick and went through all the thoughts possible. Ours is chipped so contacted vets and online pets med to register missing cat. Also delivered posters for neighbours to check sheds etc. She toddled up the drive Monday just gone and looked fine. She was lethargic and a bit jumpy though and basically scared of our other cat (who greeted her with hisses). Then I noticed a large lump under her chin. A visit to the vet confirmed an abscess from a cat bite. She is on antibiotics and is recovering. Is it possible your cat could have been scared by neighbouring cats like ours (we have a new family of four cats living very close to us). the vet told me that when cats get scared or are injured they can often go off to a quiet place but come back when they feel stronger or more confident. I'm sure your cat will be back soon so don't give up hope.

I do hope he turns up safe and well. Mine was missing for 4 weeks in March/April and despite walking the village calling her name at least twice a day, putting up posters, speaking to neighbours etc, I think she must have got herself trapped somewhere because she came back with no injuries but having lost a lot of weight.

I know it's really, really hard, but don't give up hope.

Sadly we all seem to have been in your position at one time or another. Ask around neighbouring houses if anyone has seen him, gumtree is marvellous for getting people's attention over a missing cat. Good luck phoning the council, it's a horrible call to make. Been there done that sadly. Keep looking and I am sure we will all keep hoping you can come back with good news for us. Take care. x

No news I'm afraid. Nobody has seen him and he hasn't turned up at any of the vets in my area either.

Sending good luck and best wishes.
I've heard that when cats go missing they are usually very close, they don't stray far

Definitely do not give up. My kitty turned up after 5 days. Just keep on going round the area calling his name, look up into any trees.

A colleague's turned up after several weeks. If Humphrey is in a position to make it home, he will definitely try to do that.

I've got everything crossed for you. x

There is always the remote possibility that if he has a 2nd "home" that they have booked him into a cattery while away on holiday, so he may appear back this weekend .
One of the FMs here had this happen to their cat one Christmas.

Don't give up! One of my cats years ago went missing and turned up 2 weeks later (vet think she had been catnapped, escaped and dragged herself home).

Keep positive. One of mine disappeared for three months before coming back. Hunters are known for disappearing for days or weeks on end. I wish they knew what worry it can cause their owners! I really hope your cat returns soon.

i hope your cat returns safe and sound. i have 2 cats and id be devastated if they went missing. i can relate a bit right now , where i live there is 3 other cats and one of the cats belonging to those above us has been missing for a week or so now. he was very friendly and we are more concerned than his owner who doesn't seem to care , its sad when cats go missing even if they end up just exploring far and wide

Good luck Toby I hope you find your cat soon. My cat went missing recently for 2 days and I was beside myself with worry.
Luckily for me my poster campaign was a success. All I can suggest is put up tons of posters and speak to lots of people. I was stunned by how many people offered to keep a look out for him and he was spotted by someone that had seen the poster.

If hes gone missing before and you found him try that spot.
My boy went missing again the first day he was allowed back out so i started my search at the place he had been previously found and there he was!

Thanks for the positive thoughts. Still no word from the vets in the area (I've gone a few miles in all directions, so not just my vet). I keep wondering though what could have happened. If he wandered too far from his usual patch and was found by someone, surely the first thing they would do is take him to their nearest vet. If he's still on the prowl, why doesn't he come home? I'm really worried that he's trapped somewhere but there are literally thousands of places he could be.

I was most upset about how his sister, Daisy would cope. They went everywhere together and even hunted as a pair. Of course they liked to 'wrestle' with each other too but it was only a bit of fun. Fortunately, if she's missing him, she hides it well. If anything I think she likes the extra attention she's getting. She even brought in a little shrew for me today. Humphrey was always the one to deal the finishing blow so I think it's under my wardrobe now. I'll try to fish it out later and let it go outside.
