Anyone think Charlie knows exactly what she's doing ?

I get the impression that Charlie has always been in the shadow of her somewhat over bearing mother and has never really been allowed to grow up and make the mistakes that teenagers and twenty somethings do.

When she's away from her mother, she's unsure how to conduct herself as a woman in her late twenties with the responsibility that brings, because she hasn't really being exposed to people other than 'creative art' types.

How can it be that all these 'slip ups' are somehow, coincidentally, always related to a subject that someone is particularly sensitive about ? ... the exact slip up, in fact, that is sure to offend the most

And why, having been told that she has caused offense, does she then ( after saying that she didn't mean it 'like that' at all ) does she go to repeat the offensive remark several times, in order to explain herself”

Yes, I think that she knows exactly what she is doing! She is playing both Dexter and Callum and she is a scheming little manipulator with the bomb dropping that she does!

Get Charlie Out!

She always drops the insult, then waits for the reaction. I even think I can see micro-smirks when she's subsequently questioned about it. People just don't think/talk like that, it's like how people talk when they're sarcastically pretending to have said something by accident in order to insult them, except she plays it straight.

She's like a spiteful little third form brat - of course she knows what she's saying.

No, she's thick, has no emotional intelligence, is self obsessed and is only concerned about over explaining herself... Ov and over again

lol, I love that analogy and in Charlie's case a very apt one too.

Of course she knows what she's doing.

Now, how right is she, usually?

This is a good point, she's not a toddler, bumbling into the truth or the most hurtful observation. These are well placed remarks with intent.

I' not sure Hazel even likes her anyway. Tolerate maybe. Loose mouth Charlie just cannot be trusted. The only person she had a real connection with was Dan imo. The twits are star struck and Hazel merely indulges their fancies. I can't see anything more.”

Agree with this completely.

The first few occasions I defended Charlie as I genuinely thought she was a nice but hapless girl with no malice but it is happening far too often.

Up until tonight I was unsure whether it was, at worst, intentional or, at best, a selfish and thoughtless refusal to spare people's feelings which, let's face it, is not that difficult at her age.

After tonight I'm in no doubt she is an unpleasant girl who likes to cut people up. If it was a chronic case of foot in mouth she'd be at pains to make it right but in this case she tried to turn it round on Hazel, picking pedantically at whether Hazel used a particular word or not, like in the grand scheme it mattered a jot, even going as far as to try and get back up for her stupid point and when she got it from Callum she slunk over to him and found her second wind trying to have a go at Hazel.

Someone who tries to deflect from the shitty thing they've said, and turn it round on someone else, is not a hapless innocent... I know people who do that in arguements and it's a manipulative and dirty way to fight IMO.

Probably because mummy Travers has drummed it into her little princess that every stupid comment she comes out with is correct.

The girl knows exactly what she is doing, gives the snidey remarks, then when pulled up about it, claims that she is always putting her foot in it. Gina has the measure of her.

I would love to say I think Travers Junior knows exactly what she is saying, even when drunk, but I think that would be a disservice to Charlie, She has obviously been overshadowed by her mum in social situations, so hasn't developed her own personality in those situations.

On the other hand, because she appears to be so overshadowed by her mum in this situation, her obvious foot-in-mouth syndrome has come to the fore without her mum's protection.

Basically - grow up & take responsibility for your words/actions Charlie. There is a time to stand on your own two feet.

To an extent. I think the difference is normally she has mommy or her current boyfriend or some other enabler there to bail her out when she takes it too far and shield her from the worst of the fallout. This may be the first time in her life she'll be solely responsible for her actions. Notice her immediate response was to beg Callum to agree with her.
