I am looking to purchase an e-reader that I and my partner can use to read in the dark (we have a newborn and need something for the night-feeds); but I cannot decide between the Nook Glowlight and the Kindle Paperwhite (the Kobo doesn’t appeal).
Whilst I understand that the kindle is the better machine, is it really £40/50 better? Money is tight at the moment, and whilst we could just about stretch to the cost of the Kindle, the price of the Nook is very tempting. We don’t have the money to buy a new gadget ever couple of years, so whichever one we get has to last us. We also couldn’t really afford to get a new reader (and replace the books) if say we bought the Nook, and then Barnes and Noble go out of business - so it really is the case of what would be the most sensible “one-time” purchase? The price difference in the books we are interested in is negligible, so that’s not an issue, and am only really interested in novels (not magazines or graphic novels etc)
We are very concerned that B & N are on the ropes. If they do go under, how will that effect book purchases in the future?
I understand that with the Kindle, you can store your books online or on your computer – I assume it’s the same with the Nook?
I actually like the Nook as a machine (prefer that it has buttons and the feel of it when holding it), but the brightness of the screen and the clarity of the text is obviously better on the Kindle. Have Nook users found this to be an issue with long-term reading (and wished they’d got the Paperwhite instead)?
Concerning the ease of finding e- books from other sources (eg not the Amazon or Nook stores) – what is the respective ease of conversion between formats (this of course links back to our concerns over B and N going out of business)?
Are there any other concerns that we haven’t thought of?
Neither of us has used one before, or know anyone who has one, so we could really do with the advice of you good people who actually own one.
Thank you
