Under-fire EastEnders boss Lorraine Newman has quit just days after the show suffered a ratings crisis.

The soap has been criticised for months, getting beaten by *Emmerdale last week and attacked by fans for dull storylines.

Newman was only give the role of executive producer permanently last June and has been in the post for 16 months in total.

Now, Joseph Perry, who worked on the show when it was more successful three years ago, is returning to take the job.

TV sources suggested he received an “SOS call” from BBC bosses to help get the show back up to the audiences of 10 million it enjoyed less than two years ago.

Some fans were delighted Newman was leaving. One, Laurie Hooper tweeted: “About time.”

Cameron Yarde said: “Lots of people sad that Lorraine Newman is leaving *EastEnders… Mostly on Corrie and Emmerdale.”

On Digital Spy, Blonde Babe wrote: “Great news, maybe we’ll get the old EE back...murder, mayhem...affairs etc.”

Last Tuesday, EastEnders pulled in 4.8 million viewers while Emmerdale got 5.4 million.

A TV source said: “There is a feeling things need to change or there is a risk we could become the third soap.

"Lorraine chose to leave, but there are not many complaining.”

Newman, who started as a *secretary on the soap, said she is joining BBC Drama Production as an Executive Producer.

She added: “I look forward to the *opportunities and projects this will bring.

“I have loved every moment of my time at EastEnders but it is finally time to leave Walford.”

Perry, who left to work at production company JP9, said: “I am excited about the challenge of taking the helm of Britain’s greatest drama.

“It is an honour to follow someone as talented and *experienced as Lorraine.”

BBC Drama Commissioning boss Ben Stephenson added: “Lorraine has been *responsible for some of the most memorable moments EastEnders history. I’d like to thank her for he service.”

The soap averaged just 5.8 million viewers for July.

New 'Enders Boss Wields The Axe

New EastEnders boss Joseph Perry has reportedly told several actors that they will not have their contracts with the BBC renewed.

It is believed that Gary Lucy (Danny Pennant), Phadult Sharma (AJ Ahmed), Rachel Bright (Poppy Meadow), Ricky Norwood (FatBoy Chubb), Kim Fox (Tameka Empson), Jasmyn Banks (Alice Branning) and David Witts (Joey Branning) are among the stars being told of Perry's decision.

An inside source told us 'Joseph sees it as vital that we remove all the deadwood on Albert Square. Unfortunately there is quite a lot.'

Walford To Welcome New Family

EastEnders Executive Producer Joseph Perry has announced that a new family will be joining the square in the Autumn.

The Magowans are young Irish family who have moved to London so that father Eoghan can keep his job.

The family are to be played by Colin O'Donoghue (The Tudors), Alison McGirr (Home & Away) and Maxwell Lewis and Ellie Jones, two junior performers.

Perry is adamant that Eoghan, Karan, Fionn and Cara Magowan can bring back glory to EastEnders.
