Not many will know of her under a certain age but she was best known for playing Captain Doreen Lewis in private Benjamin in both the film and tv show ( actually think she was the best one in that show tbh ) , she also starred alongside paul newman in The Sting , and has played guest roles in everything from Taxi to will and Grace as well as starred in many films , she was 80 and died of cancer ,

used to love watching Private Benjamin as a kid

I just heard the news. Can't believe it. Clue is my favourite ever film and Mrs Peacock my favourite character.

In Private Benjamin she's amazing and in so many other things. Loved her in Will and Grace too.

Very underrated.

Thoughts with her friends and family.

Very underrated.

Thoughts with her friends and family.
American actress Eileen Brennan, best known for her Oscar-nominated role in the 1980 film "Private Benjamin," has died
Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy
Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Nominated—BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role

I remember her so vividly from my teen years, as soon as the OP her face appeared to me. She was nominated for and received many awards, she was highly acclaimed by her peers - quite rightly she was highly rated.

RIP

She was definitely underrated (listing awards proves nothing), do you see that as an insult? To me it's a compliment! Anyway, this is not the place for such a discussion. This is most surely an appreciation thread. I have been crying a lot this evening due to my sadness that one of my favourite actresses has died - something I've never experienced before. I've changed my phone background in her honour.

I will never forget her.

Eileen was also wonderful in Murder By Death and The Cheap Detective.

Working together in Private Benjamin led to an enduring friendship with Goldie Hawn.
After dining together in 1982 Eileen was struck by a car as they left the restaurant. Her legs were smashed, bones on the left side of her face were broken, and her left eye socket was shattered.

Eileen said that she fought her injuries with rage.

"I was no saint" she said, "I was angry, and anger is a powerful emotion. It increased my determination not to go under, to get well."

Sadly, Eileen became dependant on pain killers, and two tyears after the accident she entered the Betty Ford Clinic to cure her addiction.

A decade after the accident she said that she was glad that she was struck by the car.

"We get addicted to the dull pain of life, but once we accept that life is tough we can evolve and grow and move on. You learn from powerful things, initially there is enormous anger, but your priorities get shifted around."

Brave Lady.

RIP Eileen.

I had to look her up but recognised her instantly.

She was in so many TV movies and series, usually as a baddie bitch from hell and she did it so well. Her croaky voice made her stand out, a retiring flower she wasn't but a very watchable competent actress and lady.

Sleep tight and thanks Eileen.

I remember first seeing Eileen act in a small role as a society hostess in 'Daisy Miller' starring Cybill Shephard which was directed by Peter Bogdanovich. I believe she also starred in 2 other Peter Bogdanovich films, 'The Last Picture Show' & 'At Long Last Love'.

A great actress who will be much missed. RIP, Eileen Brennan.

Another vote for her performance in 'Murder by Death' (which, if you've never seen, you really should! )
