BT Infinity installation - no faceplate

I had BT Infinity installed this morning and the engineer didn't install a new faceplate on the phone extension point. When I asked him about this he said he had run out and they weren't necessary. He said all the faceplate did was build the filter into the extension point. Is this correct or is it likely to cause me problems with my broadband in the future?

If you do not have a filtered faceplate, it means that you will need a microfilter on all of your sockets.

If i was you, I would call my ISP and ask them to send an engineer round to finish the job left by the first one.

I had infinity installed last Monday and the engineer fitted a new faceplate, he said it was needed (even though i already had a filtered one).
I would phone BT and tell them that the engineer done a botch job.

EDIT for my last post.
As long as the engineer installed a new faceplate on your master socket all your extensions will be filtered. Some good info here:-

I'd get them back, or add the faceplate yourself especially if you find your speeds aren't good or it's unreliable.

even on ADSL2+ those openreach filters are brilliant and arguably the best.

This is right. Why would you need a filtered faceplate on an extension socket? I've got several extensions in use, none with filtered faceplates, it all works fine as the master has one fitted.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm not impressed by the engineers. I had one come a couple of weeks ago and he said he couldn't install it at all because he said both my sockets were acting as main sockets rather than one being an extension. Then the one that came today said the first one didn't know what he was talking about and there was no problem installing it.

I really don't want to take a third day of work just for them to change the faceplate so unless I have problems with it might just not bother

So, does your MASTER socket have a ff or not?

If you would rather not take time off work it might be worth buying the faceplate that people have already linked to, if you're confident that you can install it.

I had broadband with an older NTE5 faceplate, that had the filter in so I didn't need one on each socket in the house. Mine wasn't changed to the new one when I got fibre installed. However, I had a fault where the line kept disconnecting and also my speed was jumping up and down.

An engineer was called out and couldn't find any problems. He did do a few wiring re-crimps though and also changed to the newer faceplate. Everything was fine after that. So clearly that was probably the cause.

Thanks, maybe I will try that although I don't know which of my sockets is the master. As I said in my earlier post the engineer that came last week said they were both master sockets and said he couldn't install it at all.

Filtered faceplate. As already said, if your master socket has one your extension sockets don't need one.

It doesn't make much sense that a BT tech is unable to figure that out and actually fix it so that you only have one socket.

You and me both. We have had some new neighbours recently and the rubbish spun to them by an Openreach person (BTW, Can we stop calling them engineers - I am a real engineer and I object.) was truly dreadful and total round things. If they had not spoken to me, they still would not have a broadband service.

He was simply a lazy sod who was trying everything possible to avoid doing his job!

Could be an engineer down on their luck and slumming it as an installer?

Probably a contractor.

My master socket already had a filtered faceplate on it, that I ordered from ADSL nation,

But when we went fibre optic, the guy replaced it with the open reach faceplate - with the data connection socket at the top.

I wouldn't have been too happy if they didn't. You should call your provider and insist, op

He said he would have to go in the loft and find where the extension split off from the main socket but he wasn't insured to go in the loft. The guy today said it didn't matter and just plugged it into the the existing socket. I doubt it has the filtered faceplate as it just looks like a standard one and has been there for quite a long time (at least before I moved in 7 years ago)

Self installs are coming soon anyway for FTTC so it'll be back to microfilters for everyone.

I know how you feel. We had infinity installed on the
22nd July as well as a phone line extension to a bedroom. the engineer could not work out why the internet was not working.

reported it as a outside fault, the next engineer arrived on the 26th and informed us that it must of been a contractor because the had only gone and ran the phone line extension from the virgin media phone line ! and he had plugged the infinity broadband into the virgin media broadband !!!

we have to wait till the 14th August for a engineer to fix it ... to top that off , whoever came on the 26th has disconnected the virgin phone line meaning we cant use a line we are still paying for . I did not intend to cancel virgin media until everything was working , but we had not had a chance to tell anyone we had changed numbers yet .

yes I am a bit fed up lol. oh and BT say they can fast track it unless the order is cancelled started from scratch .

Bloody contractors.....

I just hope whoever comes next will fix the virgin phone line regardless of the fact I intend to cancel virgin . I don't think they would be happy that BT have messed with their line and would no doubt want to charge me for them to fix it

I'm glad my install was done by an actual Openreach employee (although apparently only recently trained) - even fixed my allegedly slightly dodgy extension wiring that stopped working after he fitted the faceplate. I do see Kelly vans around the place though, I assume they're a/the contractor.

My install was also done by an openreach engineer (showed me his ID), He was very polite & helpful and the whole install only took 45 mins (including his trip to the cabinet). Not even one dropped connection so far (since Monday). I am well pleased with infinity, my speed has gone from 3.3 meg down - 7k up, to this:-
