For the winter ad, we felt now was the time to move on and focus more on the passion the fans feel for the fantastic live sport we have on offer. I hope viewers will really enjoy the new ad, it's a showcase of the great action we have coming up, including more Barclays Premier League Top Pick matches than Sky Sports from now until the end of the season. We also hope people like the visual twist in the ad as Jake joins the fans."

Jake Humphrey - soon to be the most watched man in football.

Only £7.50 for unlimited BB, plus line rental and includes a free non-PVR YouView box.

Must be the cheapest way to get Sky Sports, by far.

If you could add BT Sport for another £12 a month it would be a killer!!

Curious isn't it?

A grand total of approx 11,000 people (2% of 557,000) choose to get Sky Sports through the cheapest option.

In contrast, approx 6 million people opt to get Sky Sports from Sky where it costs far more as people are forced to also take a basic TV package.

And yet we are told (and on the face of it, it makes sense!!!) that large numbers of people wish they could get Sky Sports without also having to buy basic channels.

So why don't people actually do it???

Well, it's only the cheapest way to get SS if you're factoring in broadband. Otherwise, the cheapest way to get it is from Sky themselves. With TalkTalk, it works out over £50/month when you include line rental.

Having said that, even with BB/phone, it still may be cheaper with Sky themselves if you pay your line rental a year in advance. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do the maths, but I don't think there's much in it either way when you also include the free broadband from Sky for SS customers.

Hope that barber shop has a pub/club subscription and isn't breaking BT T&C's and using a domestic one!!

TalkTalk - £48 per month. includes line rental, 24/7 free calls and unlimited BB

Unlimited BB £7.50, Annual line rental £10.50 (£126/12), Sky Sports £30.

Sky - £43.50 Entertainment and Sky Sports. No BB, no Line Rental, no free calls 24/7.

You'd be hard pressed to find those for £4.50 per month.

That's ok then Ian. Pay more for BT and less for Sky.

2018 and 2022 World Cup rights

With this could easily see a deal where selected games from the group stage were FTA/FTV/shared with terrestrial partner with one or two games from each knockout phase also freeview/shared along with the final:

"BT given green light to bid for World Cup coverage"
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/foo...-coverage.html

With the Champions League 2015-18 perhaps a posibility is to lauch a Match Choice service for Match Days 1-6 broadcasting all games which is removed at 9.45pm (for a fee). Don't Viasat/others elsewehere do similar (DirecTV?) for events which have multiple games with identical kickoffs?

BT football broadcasting deal leaves a bitter taste for fans

DirecTV does have a Match Choice service for the Champions League & Europa League since they have exclusive TV rights to games not airing on a FOX network (Fox Sports 1/2, Fox Soccer Plus or regional Fox Sports Net channels). Speaking of the US, NBC also have a similar service introduced this year for the 3pm UK EPL kickoffs where any of the other games not airing on NBC Sports Network can be watched.

Also 2013 Fifa Club World Cup (11 to 21 December) - has that yet to have a UK broadcast partner lined up?

Mark Watson from BT has just been on Radio 4's Media Show and has confirmed that BT will charge for CL coverage but not necessarily for BT Sport. So looks like CL coverage will definitely be separate from the rest of BT Sport.

When asked how much he will charge for CL he will only say that it will be less than the £40 he claims Sky Sports costs now (when you take into account the need to take other packages). When asked to compare against Sky Sports nominal £22 cost he was evasive suggesting the charge may be more than the few pounds some expect.

He was also evasive about suggestions that other customers might be subsidising sports right expenditure.

Well worth a listen. Was the first item on the show - 4.30 Radio 4.

So they will charge something less than £40 for a few matches per week on about 12 weeks a year...jee thanks BT!

Still don't see PPV being a big draw at all but I guess we will see.

The thing is though the whole of the World Cup is listed at the moment, and I doubt even if unencrypted the BT Sport channels would be seen as 'qualifying' channels. So I think the World Cup/Euros are a step too far at the moment.

The requirement to be a qualifying service is for the service to be received by at least 95% of the population of the UK.

I believe currently the commercial Freeview multiplexes reach around 90% of the population.

Interesting article in The Sunday Time today by Simon Duke. (Most of article behind a paywall).
A lot of the article summed up what has been reported to date but I thought the following were new or interesting:

2017 Ofcom review likely to force BT to wholesale its fibre broadband on more favourable terms to its competitors. Hence it's moving fast now to secure its broadband base.
Darroch was reported to be willing to "pay whatever it takes to preserve Sky's supremacy in English football."
1.5m BT broadband customers have Sky.
st week it might offer a home broadband service.
BT has £2.3bn free cashflow v Sky's £913m.
Vodafone is considering a move into the home broadband market.
The PL auction will certainly be interesting - surely there is a limit for both Sky and BT, whether or not Sky say they are "prepared to pay whatever it takes", they will have a price they can't go above without putting themselves in financial difficulty, and BT will also have a price they won't go above. The worry for Sky looking at those cashflow figures is that if BT decide to go big with their bids, they can potentially bid more than Sky.

On point 2....I think hypocrite springs to mind.

Sky accused BT of spending way to much over the top for the Champion's League but yet if the boot is on the other foot come the Prem Rights he could well be prepared to do the same.

On the other hand, if I was Darroch I would be tempted to throw some misinformation around!

True but I really think BT will be more than happy to get three packages of decent picks with Sunday at 4.00 the main one.

I think even they know how far they can go and to go all out and get 5 packages at no doubt a pathetic price could even be suicidal for them.

What is to stop BT (or somebody else) with infinite resources just outbidding Sky and everyone else for every sporting event just to put them out of business as they will have nothing to show that people would want to see, then charging silly prices knowing people would pay to get their sports "fix"?

But those sort of comments will just make BT determined to bid more. It will blow up in his face.

Ofcom would regulate them so fast.

I honestly think both Sky and BT would sacrifice the MNF, SNF and Sat 12.45 packages for the 2 Sunday afternoon ones. Having the 20 first picks is where the profile and subs are, and I think both would take their opponents having more packages and more games as long as they had the Sunday double headers and the controlling first pick rights.

As a result I think the MNF and SNF slots could actually be open to another provider should they wish to be ambitious as both BT and Sky will be so obsessed with the 3 main packs, and the 2 Sunday packs in particular.

1. Sports bodies wouldn't want all broadcasters out of business as there would be no competition for their rights. What's great for three years may not be so great in the next auction with just one buyer.
2. Some sports like the EPL insist or strongly favour split rights.
3. Sky would survive as a platform without Sky Sports so would not go out of business.
4. With a monopoly provider charging a huge amount, streaming would be seen as acceptable by a significant number of people.
5. Faced with sports securing massive amounts of money, other entrants could set up rival leagues/competitions/series in competition with established sports bodies. These could be independent or owned by Sky.
