So for much of the time they would be charging for La Liga only and I don't think that is strong enough to sustain a standalone sub.

It would be stronger if they threw in the other European Leagues but even then still doubtful (look at the audiences BT is getting for European Leagues this season) and then there would be the issue that the "main" BT Sport channels would be losing that content.”

Very fair point about the two separate blocks of CL being a problem ... in fact, I'd take that problem even further on the basis that the autumn block only ever contains a handful of vital games in the 5th & 6th group games in among a shedload of lukewarm matches while the mega-money teams face the qualifiers.

BT might be better off announcing two price schemes going into each autumn as a way of maximising their total revenue from both the CL-diehards and those who'll only pay when they feel it matters ... eg, "£15 for the whole group stage" or "£10 for games 1-to-4 & £10 for games 5-&-6".

But one new aspect of La Liga this season would help BT justify a standalone sub for that coverage because each weekend's 10 games in Spain are now being spread over at least 8 separate time-slots (and sometimes a perfect 10).

They couldn't show them all live because one of those Spanish slots is our Saturday/3pm protected time for fans going to our domestic matches.

But there have been several cases this season where La Liga's 9 other separate kick-offs, translated into UK-time, would have given BT live games at Friday/8-or-9pm, Saturday/5pm/7pm/9pm, Sunday/11am/4pm/6pm/8pm & Monday/8-or-9pm.

Even the occasional midweek rounds of La Liga are now scheduled into double-bills on each of a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday so there are never more than 2 games taking place simultaneously while fitting all 10 games into those 6 slots.

I'm surprised BT are specifically mentioning La Liga, as presumably the rights for that haven't been decided yet and Sky will be keen to keep them? So it's no guarantee BT will get the rights for it.

As far as charging for CL goes, I think their best bet would be to offer it as a separate channel (not for £9 a month though, that seems too expensive unless they somehow get some other big name rights to put on it) - but also offer a discounted rate for current subscribers to bundle the channel, maybe for £2-£3 extra per month on top of what they're paying.

BT customers who get the channels "free" would likely start getting charged too I imagine, they could throw the extra channel in as incentive for some of those to subscribe for a discounted rate.

Just went to add the upgrade for HD ready for MotoGP this coming weekend. Got a message saying they could not fulfill something or other but carried on with the process and it seems to have gone through successfully. May be the failure message was about not being able to notify the activation team to throw the switch so will see what happens over the next 24/48 hours.

BTW I wish I had known the HD package also included the HD versions of the Eurosport channels else I would have done it last month for the first round of WSB.

Both the SD and HD BT Sport channels appeared instantly for me after I ordered, although that was via Sky so might be different.

From a very reliable source I have in the European Football coverage for BT, Sky tried getting the LA Liga rights early and before BT had a chance to make an offer but the Spanish didn't take Sky's offer and decided to see what BT were going to put on the table.

All I know is that BT put in a substantial increase to what Sky put down last time.
Sky are very very keen to keep the rights but like what has already been mentioned BT are more than keen to acquire them.

Big boost for the Sport Panel in those BARB figures. 3pm slot obviously benefiting from a better lead in than in the morning.

"The offer is part of a two-week commercial tie-up between Northern & Shell and BT, which kicked off on Monday and features bespoke spot advertising, pullouts and other advertising formats running across the Daily Star and Daily Express. Advertising offering the six-month BT broadband deal will also run on Channel 5."

presumably the rights will go for at least double what sky are paying now for them if the recent Sky renewals are anything to go by? i wonder would BT be prepared to treble what Sky are paying now?

Well they would love to obtain La Liga even at the expense of Ligue 1.

All I heard was Sky increased their previous offer but BT were able to put an offer on the table as well.
What ever Sky's increase was the Spanish league clearly thought more could be obtained hence the large offer that BT put down.

I would of thought Sky would be quite anxious to keep these rights considering they have lost the Champions League and perhaps more in the way of prem games in a few years time.

La liga is just filler. To a lesser degree so is CL. Unless BT secure more premier league rights then the losses on those rights they have secured, want to secure, will be massive.

I don't think there is much appetite for standalone CL subscriptions, the take up would be tiny particularly at the price they would need to charge to make them economically viable.

There is a limit to what consumers are willing to pay at 15 quid a month for a several games of top flight football to non broadband subscribers they are already at that. I expect free sports for these subscribers to end next season, around £5 a month increasing the following season in lieu of CL football. Unless they secure more premier league packages then the board and shareholders will become increasingly concerned with this sport venture haemorrhaging money out of the business.

A 323 average is quite good for BT considering a more attractive game was on the TV for free on ITV in the FA Cup. Glad to see people watching the EFS albeit on the back of an FA Cup Quarter Final. I for one would back a swoop for rights to La Liga. Yes, BT has a two highly respected leagues in the Budesliga and Serie A but - just for the Barca and Real Madrid - it makes La Liga stand above the others.

Champions League and Europa League coming to BT should attract some attention - if nit the amount 100+ Premier League games would but from my opinion, I would personally want a bit of variety in my live football so for me I don't mind that they have less Premier League games than Sky.

As far as coverage is concerned I would have the early live Champions League game from Russia (at 17.00) followed by a preview show (ie. Champions League Football Show) hosted by James Richardson with the panelists from the European Football Show present. At 19.30, they would then move coverage on to the ground where Jake Humphrey (BTS1), another presenter (BTS2) and Daryl Currie (Celtic games) would preview this particular match. After a 15 minute summary from the grounds, coverage would then return to Richardson and the crew who would overview all the results with goals and analysis from the all the games.

Just a thought of mine. It hasn't really been discussed much but how would you have it presented?

I don't think you would be far wrong with your presenters as it would stand at the moment but a lot can still happen in a few years time.
They do clearly need another presenter but I would leave James Richardson to host the main games for the Europa Cup, make it his gig as he clearly deserves a big tournament to host.

Currie clearly for Scottish games and perhaps secondary games not featuring Scottish teams.
I would like them to bring in a big name for studio work, someone like Ray Wilkins or maybe a name from Sky who is regularly featured on Champion League nights, they really do need a big name.
I think Andy Gray will have a decent part to play along with his other work with maybe Michael Owen again as main co-commentator but even BT must realize he needs to improve for such big games.

Ian Darke, Darren Fletcher and Derek Rae are dead certs for commentaries and as has been mentioned over on the Commentators thread the likes of Simon Brotherton, Peter Drury and Jonathan Pearce would make up a very decent looking back up to those guys.

One area where I doubt BT would have very little problems in is the commentators department, they have numerous commentators who they use for European games that im sure will be used for the lesser games both for the Champion's League and Europa Cup.

Michael Owen, could do with having a couple of hours or sometime, with an experienced commentator, Ian Darke for example, to fully get his head around how to commutate, rather than it sounding like something which he pre-recorded from his first match

When he retired from Football last season, I thought it was to concentrate on horses. I would have thought he would have been better getting a job on ATR or Channel 4 Racing.

Chelsea --- Drury
Man U --- Fletcher
Man C --- Darke
Arsenal--- Pearce
Celtic---- Rae

i would like them to do something like that, like how Sky are doing it this season
Presenters
BT Sport 1 -- Jake i think is a dead cert
BT Sport 2 -- James i would like to get the other english side
BT3/ESPN ---- Scottish team with Currie
i do think 10pm till 11pm James could do the highlights from the nights matches, so maybe him in the studio, and Jake and Darrel on the road..
i do hope they use Stewart Robson and Jim Beglin as co comms, and also i like the sound of Adam Virgo, i think he has done very well this season..

For the Europa League
Paul Dempsey and James Richardson...

well thats a suggestion from me..

I would like to see him be more committed to an opinion sooner rather than having to rely on several replays or the fence-sitting waffle Andy Townsend has mastered.

My complaint is not on his voice or broadcast ability, it's more his slow ability to read the game. He's worked under some of the best managers and alongside some world greats, I expected his vision and knowledge of the game to be a bit more sharp and hopefully he'll get there watching more football live.

Paul Dempsey and James Richardson...

well thats a suggestion from me..[/quote]

Yes, I think Dempsey would be a good choice for the Europa League coverage. He's been a solid and reliable presenter of foreign football on Saturday night for BT and I would have him alongside solid pundits such as Clarke Carlisle and David James (I would assume the 'big name' pundits would have been on CL duty during Tuesday and Wednesday). My suggestion would be that they could try and adopt a Sky style Saturday Night Football move with a studio audience and a more original feel to the coverage as the Europa League - unlike the Champions League - is something that I feel needs a bit of spicing up.

Best's presence there certainly interesting.

In terms of a strategic alliance between BT and BeIN, I wonder how that would actually work in terms of, for example, the PL auction - joint bids? Or something more along the lines of BeIN Sport just joining the BT Sport pack should they win a couple of packages.

Exchanging/sharing staff is one thing, co-operating to acquire content something far more complex/significant.

It's not as though finance (or making a profit) is an issue for BeIN so I think their presence is a threat to Sky and BT.

I suppose they could both bid way over the top of all packages so hopefully in turn knocking Sky out completely and sharing the packages between them.

I doubt it would work that way but certainly something along the lines of leaving Sky out in the cold.

Looking ahead BT confirmed to me today they are showing Brazil's friendlies in June (v Serbia and Panama), for those whose boats are floated by watching Brazil!
