I still think they should have expected higher as Sky Sports 1 was "free" on Virgin and Sky.

Don't forget Sky had a free day yesterday, hence the higher peak. However, last year they also put the Premier League 'on Pick TV' for the opening day, which is labelled below as Sky2.

Last year's figures - http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=4685

So as a comparison for the opening days:

BT Sport
2013 - Liverpool vs Stoke: 764k (7.7%) - peak
2014 - Man Utd vs Swansea: 1.20m (12.7%) - peak

Sky Sports
2013 - Swansea vs Man Utd: 2.48m (14.0%) [SS1] and 649k (3.6%) [Sky2] - peak
2014 - Arsenal vs Crystal Palace: 2.21m (13.5%) - peak

BT will be ecstatic with their figure, I feel. Almost double last year's opening day number!”

I watched bt yesterday to watch the match. I didnt/dont bother too much with preamble/analsysis. I am not impresses with michael owen. Nice to get some football for free.

I didnt know sky had a free day. I would have watched arsenal.

Sky1 wasn't any higher than ~97k, if I remember correctly.

2.2 for sky is surprisingly low, isnt it. I expect its their normal figure. I didnt realise their whole model was based on such relatively small numbers.

Ah, I didn't know that. So yes, impressively close for BT Sport 1 in the circumstances.

That's just the peak for one programme, though. In the first week of the last Premiership season Sky Sports 1 reached (i.e. was seen for 3 consecutive minutes or more by) 7.6m people (presumably a free-to-air bonus was in place then as well?) and in the second week by 6.0m. And even that won't be the full extent of subscribership of course. Multiply that by £x a month and you see how it tots up.

Bit after the Lord Mayor's Show now, but Broadcast tells us that Liverpool vs Dortmund got 243,500 last weekend, followed by 859.800 for the Community Shield. At the same time on Sky the Scottish football got 316,700.

Thanks as ever Steve, pretty good figures all round there as well, they would have to be satisfied with the Liverpool game as well, not bad for a friendly.

On that Gary Linkear story, as good as he is, I really don't feel BT need him. Humphrey is a safe pair of hands and James Richardson MUST be given a role in the CL coverage as one of the main presenters.

With BT nothing is for certain, not even Mr.Humpheys himself can be guaranteed to present the top club football in Europe and as for James Richardson I have this feeling even he may not have a major role.

I fear the same, however BT will be making a big mistake if they don't involve him and the EFS pundits (along with Andy Brassell) in some capacity.

No I agree, with Richardson's knowledge of European football it would be complete madness if they didn't use him on the Europa Cup.

One would think they would use their regular pundits as well but nothing is for sure, as this season progresses im sure we will start to find out what kind of line up we may have, just remains to be seen if Humpheys does get the nod or if they will continue to look for someone else to host the competition.

With all that in mind I would also think Owen must be in some doubt to remain lead commentator for it.

Even though I would like to see James Richardson presenting I do think BT will want a huge name in UK football broadcasting.

There are many people they could go for
I have listed possible candidates and there current channel and possibility of them hostingpp

Matt Smith - ITV (possibly)
Jeff Stelling - Sky (very Unlikely)
Steve Rider - Freelance (possibly)
Jim Rosenthal - Freelance (possibly)
Manish Bhasin - BBC ( possibly)

you are right about Stelling, no chance at all particularly with his connections to Sky.

How is James Richardson not considered a huge name??

What more would he have to do to get into that bracket?

He is an icon in my mind, and is way higher up than Jake is right now.

Totally agree he is but I doubt very much he is the man BT are loo0king for to host their Champion's league, infact id say he has no chance with the very least he may get is the Europa games but even that to me seems unlikely, perhaps the best he could hope for is a highlights package?

Saying that you would surely need two presenters for the Champion's League group stages and maybe even for the Europa Cup depending how of course BT are going to set it all up.

I would like to see BT having

Jake for the Premier League and Fa Cup as Sky dont have there PL host on Champions League duty do they it is usually Jeff Stelling and Ben Shepard I think.

James Richardson for European league football and Europa League

Steve Rider and Jim Rosenthal on Champions League but e.g steve on BT Sport 1 on Tuesday and BT sport 2 on Wed and the opposite for Jim.
Then both can host 1 semi each and both host the final together.

Matt Smith on Europa league live coverage

Manish Bhasin on Champions League and Europa League Highlights on BT Sport

Hardly fantasy as they are all sports broadcasters Jake and James actually host what I listed.

Steve and Jim have hosted in the past on itv so that could happen
