Because they made a decision that they would be worth showing.

Think about it though. Why would anyone watch highlights on a subscription sports channel when the whole event is live for free on ITV4 which is on Freeview,Sky,Virgin, Freesat and online.

The programmes will also be on the itv player.

And ITV are showing the races commercially uninterrupted too which is a bonus

But, its extra revenue for Formula E and more exposure.

I would, as I already have the subscription channel and already watch far too much motorsport live to be able to fit in another series (stacking up BTCC to save for the off-season as it is) so highlights will do for me.

I'm probably missing something obvious here, but could someone explain why this is significant in their battle against Sky, as the article appears to be hinting?

The BT logo on Hannover v Schalke is driving me mad - what's with the giant "TODAY" below it that's almost as big as the BT Sport logo itself? It's far too large. Just write "today" in a small font underneath the logo if they must, no need for the giant text and filled background.

If it effectively starts it's own production company, then they won't be relying on the likes of sunset and Vine for production. The initial outlay would probably be huge, but would save them money over time. If they start their production company, said company will be able to produce other things than just sport. We could see (imo) the likes of BT Sport News, entertainment channels and BT maybe producing other projects for other channels too. Take ITN for example, they regularly produce shows for the likes of channel 4 and other channels news output etc.

I honestly think it's only a matter of time till we see BT starting up it's own entertainment portfolio, for me it's the next logical step if they want to build up their own tv service.

Or I could be totally WRONG!

Good figures for BT last week.
Are there any figures for yesterday's match between Villa and Newcastle and Fletch and Sav before it.
Liking how Mathday Live is shaping up. Soon it will be:
10am, Fletch and Sav
12pm, PL Match
3pm, Aviva Premiership Match
5.30pm, Bundesliga match
7.45pm, Serie A match

It looks like Saturday will be full of content when the rugby returns.

Less than 369k for BT Sport 1's PL coverage on Saturday as it didn't make the ITV Media top 10. Sky's Saturday Night Football averaged 888k (6.3%) from 16:45.

That's not good if true. Would have expected something higher than 400k for the game given the fan bases of villa and Newcastle. Awful game however and I can see why neutrals will have switched off.
Does anyone actually have the approximate average figures?

Not quite sure why you would of thought it was going to attract good figures, even if it was shown on Sky the figures were always going to be on the poor side, yet come this Saturday im sure with Man Utd being shown again we will be talking figures around 700k.

Will also be interesting to see how Fletch and Sav figures held up compared to last week.

According to a post on the Ratings thread they collapsed:

BT Sport - Fletch and Sav 21,000 (100,000 last week)

I think people are excited for the new season and BT's big game so start tuning in early. You were always going to see a fall the following weekend (especially given it was a bank holiday weekend).

The ratings for Villa v Newcastle aren't surprising to me - not a lot of interest in the game at this point of the season. I suppose we have the maximum quota to thank for the fact that we got to see that over Chelsea v Leicester.

We can use the excuse of a Bank Holiday and a relatively poor looking game to follow but im sure those figures will send shock waves across BT, they are exceptionally poor.

With Man Utd being shown again this weekend will be interesting to see if the figures go up accordingly.

The game was shockingly poor, so i don't think BT bosses will be too concerned as they'd of known they'd not be getting anything close to a decent figure.
The Man Utd game this weekend will bump it back up for sure.

With subscription tv, not much difference to bt if people watch five games or thirty eight. Only real issue is whether the big games draw in people getting it free in large numbers.

No. Not the case at all.
The viewing is a very important factor

Yes, agree entirely.

Primary objective of the exercise is to sell / retain broadband subs (+ line rental / calls) and secondary objective is to sell BT Sport pay TV subs.

What matters is that the content is attractive enough to attract people in the first place and that once people have it they want to keep it.

To do that, people don't need to watch anywhere near remotely every game - and hardly anyone does that anyway. Remember the average Sky Sports subscriber who watches PL watches 30 games out of 116 (calculation excludes people who watch zero).

Vast majority of BT games feature a big 6 club - the fact that the audience plummets for the weakest games is to be expected and is neither here nor there in the overall scheme of things.

Peter Drury & Jim Beglin did the commentary for the world feed that is also used by Premier League productions when the put together the PL review show thingy.
But they're not ITV's commentators anymore, they're freelance.
Although they do freelance work for ITV at times....
