Makes sense. I wonder if it will see the end of the 3pm games which Setanta televises for Ireland? Could these 33 games be the ones moved to Sunday to help remove one more route for pubs to show 3pm matches at the same time.

Got it. You would have thought they would have got that info right considering the battle they had to get the rights etc.

Well as the fixtures are not chosen in advance, no.

There would still be a 3pm package offered but with one less match at 3pm it is questionable how attractive the 3pm package would be for Setanta - especially as they now appear to be restricted in the choice they can make.

Popeye's given some great reasons as to why it should still remain ESPN. Why do you suggest rebranding it?

I have a feeling this suggestion of adding extra Sunday night fixtures is more designed to appease Sky. Granted, BT Sport will welcome this additional fixtures as well, but I think the EPL understand that Sky may be at possible risk of losing some of their most lucrative rights come next tender and this news will kind of give both companies protection. Sky will keep their Super Sundays and BT will be able to offer a more lucrative and popular offering.

I may be totally missing the point here but.....another package is designed to help who?
Sky could easily lose their 4.00 Sunday and if worse comes to the worse be left with something like BT have at the moment.
If its all down to bidding there should be absolutely no guarantee as to who wins what.
I find it quite baffling at the moment that certain journalist's and media are suggesting such toff that the prem league are worried about Sky and what may happen to their amount of fixtures they have, you could read in to it that they already know where packages are going, which should be impossible to judge.

Precisely what's thought when I first read it too. It leaves you thinking that the next tender will be a straight forward process in which Sky maintain their 116 games while the Premier League add more games into the mix so BT can be happy with an increase. i know the Premier League say they cut the umbilical cord once the tender goes out but it's down to the individual as to whether you believe that for a second or not...

Remember that the 2012 packages were set out to fit the Sky-ESPN model, with the natural split allowing ESPN to have all of the Sat 17:30 games with mainly third and fourth picks.

It's perfectly possible that the PL will look to do something similar again in setting up the packages in a 'convenient' way for Sky and BT. However the difference in this case is that Sky and BT may want the same thing, i.e. first picks and prime slots. This makes it much more difficult for the PL to create a natural split of the packages to suit the broadcasters. If anything we may see the most valuable games divided up more evenly to encourage greater competition across board, although it is a difficult balance.

Indeed, and you could also say that the current arrangement was also designed with Sky/ESPN after ESPN publicly stated how a 38-match offering would be more appealing than the then 23 matches they had, if I remember correctly. Just so happened they were outdone by BT.

I think the overall point being made above is that the article being discussed could be read as saying it's already a forgone conclusion that the Premier League are waiting to award Sky the same advantage - games wise - whilst at the same time keeping BT happy by introducing a new Sunday night package. It's all conjecture of course but it wouldn't surprise me at all if that's what happens.

I wonder if the Sunday Evening package will have any affect on the La Liga TV rights deal as well as the European Football Show should BT get that package.

Although you would have to be pretty dumb though to think that KPMG, or whoever else the Premier League appoint next time as the independent observer, would want to risk their business as a respected auditor by committing fraud.

Wouldn't a sunday night fixture be overkill? Surely friday night would be better?

There is a significant problem with available slots, if the PL are clear they don't want competing games on different channels at the same time.

Tue, Wed, Thurs are out on most weeks due to UCL & UEL, this also prevent some teams playing Friday nights.

Three games back to back on most Sunday's would feel incredibly tiring for the viewer who wants to watch all the games, although research shows that the majority of viewers don't watch all the games. The other option is for a second Saturday night game - at 8pm, but this won't fly in most cities.

Extra games, what was shown exclusively on the website and app before.

It's for their BT Sport Extra channel which shows the odd match or other sport when they don't have space on their other channels. Basically their BT Sport Digital online stream but on TV.

TV listings for it

Yes I think your right, but would BT really want that? and would the Prem League really be happy to offer Sky what they already have even if BT offer a substantial amount more than what Sky are?

I cant believe any kind of deal will be struck up between the two considering their history or is it maybe that the Prem league are concerned that BT will scoop a lot more games so leaving Sky with the minority hence then the extra package...for them?

Like you say it is all pure conjecture at the moment.
