I think BT need to carefully make sure however they package their sport content in the light of their UCL/EL acquisitions, that they ideally take the following into consideration:
1) The price increases for existing BT Sport customers is not too greatly increased (if they go down the route of standard extra charge with games on BTS1/2) or any new add-on price for the UCL is not too expensive. Whilst these rights are a major coup and a very lucrative contract, ultimately when you consider there will be at least one game from each British team and the Final F.T.A anyway, it could majorly backfire if they charge too much given some customers may decide to cut their losses and be content with this.
2) BT Sport customers don't lose out on content they already received as a result of the launching of any new platform that they launch, for instance as previous posters have suggested, the moving of European football games to a new channel created. This risks alienating existing customers and them feeling short-changed.
3) The whole process is as straightforward as possible. There are a whole range of opportunities for BT with this coverage but if they were to deploy them all you could have a very confusing situation were it is hard to understand what's available to you, when and on what platform. For instance if you had a new channel that was encrypted at certain times (ie. could be viewed by people not paying the extra fee when non-UCL content was on but was encrypted when there was UCL programming) this could lead to people missing programming they may have watched thinking they do not have access to it. Throw in the whole, BT Broadband, infinity, red button, certain matches F.T.A, extra cost, match choice and any options such as goal alert like Sky currently do then it could be very confusing for some, particularly those less technology savy.
4) They at least need to match if not better the current standards of Sky Sports (very hard given the quality of coverage they produce) to ensure their coverage of the UCL/EL has credibility and is not subject to the negativity of other elements of their coverage.
Personally, I could envisage the following model:
* The main 'home' of the UEFA Champions League/Europa League matches to be on a new additional BT Sport channel specifically for these rights in the style of Sky Sports F1. This channel could broadcast the 'main' match of the night and contain a match choice element via the red-button that contains the other games available to watch.
* When games are not taking place there could be a range of content related to the competitions such as the UEFA Champions League weekly magazine, highlights of matches taken place, full match re-runs, press conferences etc and then any other relateable content (for instance something like Clare Balding's interview with Jose Mourinho or UCL greatest goal programs.) This could be available as either
1) an add on to an existing BT Sport subscription (personally this should be no more than an extra £3 per month in my opinion)
2) a standalone subscription for something like £5-7 per month.
* BT Sports 1 to be the home of the F.T.A matches and maybe other secondary matches on evenings were there is F.T.A match for non-BT customers.
I don't believe this is a perfect solution but it is relatively straightforward and could work despite obvious minor negatives.
