Subscription TV is odd in the sense that people often subscribe irrationally. (i.e. people subscribe to have access, even if they wont watch it. People for example like having access to 116 PL games, but only watch about 30)
As mentioned before I think how the CL will be viewed in terms of what BT will offer exclusively is key. If its a) Live and exclusive Champions League- only place to watch is BT- is the key message that gets across- then BT quids in If its b) Free CL once a week in the group stages FTA as now, and all the SF and Finals FTA with extensive FTA highlights on ITV- then BT will struggle Personally I'm the type of person BT will be desperate to have. Without wanting to sound arrogant I can afford it, but don't have it at present as I cant watch any 12.45 games on a Sat. Is SF and Final plus one game FTA in group stage, £20 a month or so (if you need basic BT Sport and then add on) to watch about 10 matches max (probably only really interested in 5 games where I'd make an effort to leave house to watch) then probably wont. If I didn't think there was a chance of Group Stage FTA, SF and Final- then probably I would subscribe though. |

I actually think there will be a game free every matchday but some of the free games might not involve a british team

Thats all they have said they will show, atleast; So the chances of them showing more are slim-to-none!
![]() Their PR at the time said "at least one game per British team" PLUS the Final (in other words the commitment to British teams doesn't include the Final). We've since also been made aware that semi-finals will also be free and they've also committed to "top games in the earlier rounds" although they will possibly include the British teams. My guess is they'll show one each matchweek - close to what exists now - and that this is what UEFA sought on behalf of their sponsors who would have been unhappy at losing the present FTA exposure. I'm guessing that once BT guaranteed free games UEFA were willing to give them exclusivity. It'll be interesting finding out though! |

Then again why use the words "at least". Why not just say one per team
![]() Their PR at the time said "at least one game per British team" PLUS the Final Its better PR to come out and say atleast, which means there is scope to be flexible. Whereas coming out and saying ONLY one limits them and isn't as good an image. |

Because as you said, PR mate!
Its better PR to come out and say atleast, which means there is scope to be flexible. Whereas coming out and saying ONLY one limits them and isn't as good an image. Why would they need "scope to be flexible" if they only intend on showing each team once? At the time of the rights award everybody was in a state of shock. They just needed to guarantee to show each team for free once and it would've lessened the blow somewhat anyway. Of course that Press Release is still accessible and will be remembered. I believe it is actially worse PR to mislead viewers ![]() As I said though we'll all have to wait and see... |

Obviously they cannot guarantee any team more than once, Any of the teams could get knocked out before there's a chance to show them a second time. I do sense that sponsors have played a major part in negotiations between BT and UEFA which means that I strongly believe that, although what we will actually get for free won't be as much as we could optimisitically hope for, I also don't think it will it be as little as the cynics are guessing at. But it will be fascinating finding out

I don't understand mate. Your position there is precisely what I've been saying and is all I've been pointing out to those who say it will categorically be ONLY one game per British team. So basically you actually agree with me

Im more interested to know how its going to be shown and at what price! The summer cannot come soon enough for them to let the cat out of the bag as it were! And on that note, good night!

Sky figures may provide BT with food for thought re the idea of separately charging for the CL:
Those CL ratings really aren't great - sure Liv/Man U is special (albeit that it's in the Sun 1.30pm slot) but a fairly run of the mill Hull/Chel at Sun 4pm is beating both those CL games by a very wide margin. Of course put Man U or Liv in the CL and there would be a significant improvement. You saw that when ONDigital and ITV Digital had the Champions League, if you didn't support one of the teams in it, you didn't really feel the need to get it. Of course, it was different with that channel because you had to have ONDigital to get it, and all the biggest games were live on ITV, and they didn't have the Premier League either so if you were a Spurs fan, for example, you might see them once in the League Cup if you were lucky. It's easier to get BT, and they have the Premier League as well, but if Liverpool weren't in the Champions League, would I be especially interested in paying more to see it, especially the group stages? Probably not, I might be happy enough with the free games. It's a bit of pot luck too because if a British team makes it to the quarter or semi finals they become big, big matches that perhaps transcend club loyalties, but if they don't, it's of far less interest to the casual fan. Especially as you can see the likes of Barcelona and Bayern every week anyway. |

What are the TV rights with the two European rugby competitions?
I thought all of the Champions Cup is with BT sports this season and the second tier, Challenge Trophy on Sky. But the Northampton game seems to be on Sky Sports now and BT have had some of the other comp. Have Sky had any other Champions Cup matches before tonight? |

It's half-and-half with both competitions. In the group stage BT and Sky each had 5 games per round in the Champions Cup, with BT having top picks involving English clubs and Sky top picks not involving English clubs. They each also had the rights to up to 5 Challenge Cup games, although no broadcaster ever showed more than 1 game per round.

Thanks for all that. I have only BT not Sky. I had not noticed any major game not on BT before now, they must have all been the English sides then.

The VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE" is coming along with two new broadcasting initiatives and a new three-year TV deal with BT SPORT.
The Football Conference is proud to announce that `The Vanarama National League` is coming to a ground near you! In a re-branding initiative, which will under-line the competition's status at the pinnacle of the semi-professional game; and linked to a community programme the length and breadth of the country, the Vanarama National League will engage fans not only of the competition’s 68 member clubs but football throughout the UK and beyond. The new `Vanarama National League` will officially take its place in the football family on June 6th and the changes will include a new look logo, whilst acknowledging the past it looks to the future, to strengthen the competition's identity. The Vanarama National League will also launch a new broadcasting company, NLTV, which will be the first fully dedicated broadcasting channel focusing solely on the 68 member clubs, creating a regular narrative for the competition that will run throughout the whole season and lastly, in yet another first, the competition will create the all new NLTV Broadcasting Academy. Brian Barwick, the incoming chairman of the new Vanarama National League said: "I am delighted to be joining at this vibrant time with this exciting new branding. It offers so much to our existing partners whilst at the same time opening up potential new opportunities. I look forward to steering this great competition to new levels of awareness and visibility.” A further resounding endorsement for this level of the game and in support of the new branding initiative, BT Sport have agreed a new three-year deal with the competition which will extend the live coverage of matches and feature a regular weekly highlights show to be broadcast on a Sunday evening, Tony Kleanthous, Board director responsible for broadcasting said: "We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with BT Sport and indeed embracing their expertise and experience. NLTV's aim is to launch a very affordable internet subscriber portal in 2016 where fans anywhere in the world can keep up to speed with what's going on across the activities of all member clubs and everything which affects them, their players and even their fans. The NLTV daily show will include short clips, podcasts and updates from clubs around the country and our new digital platform will also feature highlights from every game every week so you never need miss the action." Steve Norris, commercial director at BT Sport said: "We are proud to continue our sponsorship of this level of the game with a significant further investment for another three years. We are also pleased to support the academy initiative which underlines our commitment not only to grass roots football but the future education for all the young students out there who want a helping hand up the sports broadcasting ladder." Chairman of Vanarama David Bernstein said: "My extensive involvement in football over the years has allowed me to be connected with a wide range of initiatives. I am particularly excited by this announcement and the Broadcasting Academy is an educational project to which Vanarama is proud to extend its support. We have demonstrated our commitment to football and their communities up and down the country and want to continue working with an organisation whose vibrancy and ethos matches our own." The final words come from the outgoing chairman of the Football Conference Brian Lee, who will complete his tenure at the end of this current season: "Our announcement around the name change, broadcasting channel and academy excites me and I sincerely hope it excites the football world. I know I am passing on this organisation in good shape and there is much more to come with the positivity showed so far it can only be more exciting for our clubs, our fans and the future of our game." *BT Sport has also teamed up with Vanarama, to provide financial support for the all new "NLTV Broadcasting Academy". This will be another first for the industry, whereby forty-eight media students from around the country will be given the opportunity to be part of this exciting new initiative where they will be trained in filming techniques and then embedded with clubs, provided with BT professional broadcasting equipment and taught by BT Sport technical staff how to film, edit and stream media to a new production hub. Tony Kleanthous added "This would never have been possible without the committed support of the commercial team at BT Sport and our hugely supportive title sponsor Vanarama who have committed extra funding and other resources to help get this worthy project up and running. This will provide students with the best teaching, using the best equipment in the best environment, real on the job training and I just can't wait to see the smiles on the faces of the graduates who receive the first diplomas we will be handing out next year." Vanarama, the competition’s Title Sponsor, together with leading sports marketing agency SportQuake have combined to facilitate the name change and logo design, culminating in the announcement last month that Vanarama were extending not only their main sponsorship but adding support for the academy. This underlines their commitment not only to the competition but also to education and community. SportQuake specialise in creating world class two-way partnerships between rights owners and brands. http://www.footballconference.co.uk/...?news_id=14915 |
