Is it possibly the case based on this that the additional CL streams will be HD only? As a BTTV customer without access to Infinity it would be really disappointing if this meant the full CL wasn't available.

Hopefully this relaunch will involve the bloody logo being made opaque and moved to the top of the damn screen along with the scorebar like everyone else!

Still so distracting when trying to watch something live.

What so they are going to have 10 BT channels?

You might be in luck there as UEFA rules usually mean they control where the scoreboard is put and the style used - a bit like the Europa league games!

Indeed, UEFA prohibit any non-UEFA graphics onscreen at the bottom including channel logo's so thats one, but the rest....

So now we are going to have BT sport 1, 2 and 3, Sky Sports 1 thru 5 and Eurosport 1and 2.

I make that ten general sports channels.

What on earth are they going to fill all these channels with?

Does it matter? More choice of what to watch is a good thing even if quality of a channel goes down its not like you are actually losing any quality sport!

Hopefully with a bit of extra bandwidth BT can show more (full) repeats/reruns of European football games the number of which have been decreasing markedly over the past few weeks with matches previously shown as live not getting any sort of re-run and games on BT Sport Extra or not shown at all only getting 60 minute highlight packages.

Could BT do a deal to get a space on the BBC HD multiplex to broadcast there fta channel in SD which could increase the amount of people using Freeview HD boxes and give everyone in the uk access to the channel if they have a freeview hd box

I believe that DVB-T2 capacity is all thats available so yes, you'll need a Freeview HD box or TV to get it unless space can be squeezed out elsewhere but BT actually seem to give a toss for the PQ so...

They are highly unlikely to be HD only as that would be a nonsensical business model. Many people don't care one jot about HD, especially on BT TV's Internet channels which seem to have better SD quality than Freeview or satellite SD (at least via fibre). In fact, like Paddy Ashdown on last week's Election coverage, I'd be happy to eat my marzipan hat if they did that.

Another interesting point is the speculation that these additional 'occasional' channels will be on BT TV by Internet only... because multicast IP is AFAIK the most bandwidth efficient and cost-effective way to deliver such channels. As soon as such a channel ceases transmission, its bandwidth can be killed - and even when transmitting, the bandwidth is only in use for subscribers whose box is 'tuned in' to the channel at the time. A goodly proportion of the delivery cost is bandwidth-linked, if it's reasonably popular anyway.

Sensible decision by BT TV IMO if true, leveraging the efficiency and flexibility of its Internet multicast delivery system... but certain to include SD versions IMO.

Indeed - and, whilst limiting the full CL multiscreen service to BT TV subscribers would upset a number of people, it is no different to Sky limiting the service to those on the Sky platform until now.

Although, I thought we had seen SD versions of the multiscreen set-up being tested on satellite, so I wonder if just the HD versions will be exclusive to the BT TV platform? That would lead to less negative publicity, too, as the HD versions have never been available before, anyway, so Sky platform users are getting the same as they always have, or they could move over to BT TV for that upgrade...

Good point, I didn't think of that. Sky limit their Sports 1/2 availability on the BT platform to SD only (though they tried hard not to do even that).

Sky Sports' delayed match-choice PL coverage is not available via BT TV though, so if BT were to allow/provide that kind of thing via satellite, it would be a nice bonus for viewers using that medium. I hope we see some kind of reciprocal deal here though, now that BT will be in a stronger negotiating position, for the benefit of the viewers on both platforms.

It's been a while since I've watched something on TV as poignant and moving as the Bradford fire anniversary documentary that BT Sport have just shown.

A fitting tribute to those who lost their lives thirty years ago today.

BT Sport and the BBC should jointly make these programmes in the future

Wonder how BT Sport are going to fulfil their FTA obligation to Freesat customers? They seem to be launching a FTA channel for Freeview and Sky & Cable can be unencrypted as required on the existing EPG, but not obvious how it will work on Freesat?

What obligation?
There is zero obligation to Freesat!

They'll make the channel freely viewable and its up the toe viewer to have the necessary equipment to watch. Its not for BT to go around every platform making a channel for each specific version!

Well, they're making one for Freeview. Presumably the matches will be FTA rather than FTV then?

We can only dream of a Michael Owen-free UCL

I will be amazed if BT allow the games on satellite to be FTA because of overspill.
They'll be free but like SonyTV is. Free but you need a viewing card so yes, FTV
Freeview doesn't have overspill issues (Apart from when weather in extreme cases makes the signal barely readable in France)
