It also means the status quo is retained for customers on the Sky platform. The only games in HD on the red button were the ones already on normal Sky Sports channels (and even then that was a recent innovation - it used to be that watching a "main" game via the red button was in SD only, removing the attraction of using the Goal Alert feature).

So we're paying £5 a month for something we already get (if you have Sky Sports) Gary Lineker is an upgrade on their current lot of dire commentators but they need much better pundits I don't want Robbie Savage commenting on Champions League football with his "get stuck in rubbish".

Also want full red button coverage as per Sky. The figures may not be that high but it's having the option to watch any match is a USP. That goes for the Europa League too has they now have a monopoly on that, I want just as many games as we get currently.

They are going to need lots of commentary teams to accommodate this. Before someone mentions "world feed" (most overused two words on the forum) Sky used their in-house commentary team for the red button matches.

Worth quoting from Broadcast, I think:

Quote:
“Broadcast understands that Lineker is to be announced as a member of BT’s European football presenting team at an Olympic Park launch event on 9 June.

UHD plans

BT Sport is also expected to announce plans to become the first UK broadcaster to launch an Ultra High Definition service.

The broadcaster was granted a licence for a channel titled BT Sport Ultra HD as part of Ofcom’s Television Broadcast Licensing Update for April.

The Television Licensable Content Service (TLCS) licence paves the way for BT Sport to distribute the channel via satellite, cable, IP services, such as Youview, and mobile - but not digital terrestrial television (DTT).

BT Sport has conducted a series of UHD tests at football, rugby and basketball matches in recent month. Chief operating officer Jamie Hindhaugh told Broadcast at the start of the year that he felt the broadcaster was ready to begin transmitting UHD content, with Champions League coverage on its radar.”

Roll on 9th. June. Even I *might* be interested in the UHD, if the cost is low - though I am happy with BT Sport and Sky Sports SD quality via BT 'fibre' Internet as it's better than via SD satellite.

If you sign up for BT Sport at the moment, as a BT Broadband customer, you will get BT Sport 1 and 2 free for 18 months.

We shall see whether that changes on Tuesday, but it means there will be a significant number of people who are not paying for the first season of Champions League.

In isolation I think £5 isn't bad. Sky are the rip off merchants here, their subscription price should go DOWN next season.

Sky's commentary teams are used by pretty much all international broadcasters - e.g. Fox in the U.S. use the Sky audio, Supersport in the whole sub-Saharan Africa region use the Sky audio, beIN Sports across the whole Middle East & North African region use the Sky audio... They are effectively the world feed. I see no reason why BT won't be providing the same service. Whether they offer certain ones off-tube remains to be seen, especially for Europa League coverage.

OK, that's interesting.

Looking into this on behalf of a friend - they've been with BT Broadband for a few years now and haven't ever taken advantage of any retention deals or offers by threatening to leave etc. I've told them that they should, especially given they've got an old BT Vision box when they would appreciate a YouView box if they had one, plus a new Home Hub would be good for the dual band wifi (they've got a HH3).

I was thinking that it'd be a good idea to wait until the BT Sport pricing announcement on Tuesday and see what deals they might be able to take advantage of (and play off one provider against another - particularly thinking of Virgin Media).

But actually, it seems like it might be a good idea to haggle with BT and get them signed up for a new 18 month deal before Tuesday, so securing 18 months of free BT Sport - does this sound like a good idea? Or could BT still charge extra somehow, perhaps by introducing an extra channel for Champions League sold at a premium, which they wouldn't automatically get...

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

BT can do anything they like until they have announced it. Their CL coverage may well not be on bog standard BT Sport 1 or 2, but you know this.

As has been mentioned, does this necessarily mean that the CL will be free for such customers? If BT Sport 3 launches as the home of the CL for the price of £5 per month, then surely it is not included in this deal that you mention.

And if BT have not promised the CL in any shape or form to customers taking BT Sport 1 and 2 through this offer then they are doing nothing wrong, surely?

As a current BT broadband customer, we received an email back in April that in order to retain BT Sport's channels for free (BT Sport 1 & 2), we would need to renew our BT Broadband contract by 19 June.

Bt will need to launch more channels if they are going to show that many coverage live.
Red button wont cut it, especially on youview boxes.

Plus if I want to record it on VM, I will need channels. (you can't record BT Sport extra at the minute)

Record red button? Asking a bit much you can't even do that on Sky.

If anyone is intrested, you can sign up for BT Sport Ultra HD, to be delivered exclusively through Youview (Multicast IP). New Youview+ box will be needed.

You can now record practically all red button Sky sports events on your Sky Box, and have been able to for a few years now.

Every ucl game will be available live on one of 8 new dedicated channels. Premier league will still be free to bb customers but UCL will be extra prob about 5 quid a month. There was talk that UHD may and additional cost on top of that. There will be a about 60 live events on UHD in the first year including UCL and premier league - ucl numbers dependent on home nations performance. Trial events recently have included last premiership game, semi final FAC cup, FA vase final, O2 NBA basketball and avviva final (1 year after BTs first e2e trial if the same event). UHD will only be available on new G5 you view box - no other platform. G5 will also have UHD netflix and a catalogue of Films from Sony and redbull,

Good news we get all the games. What about Europa league? How are Virgin going to fit in 8 extra channels?

Meanwhile, Sky Sports say goodbye to the Champions League:

Quote:
“Barney Francis, the head of Sky Sports, said: “Last season, we saw our lowest ever Champions League audiences and not a single European game appeared in our top 40 football matches. Overall, Champions League accounts for just 2.5pc of Sky Sports viewing, while the Premier League is seven times bigger."”

Where do you get this info from? As far as I know, nothing has been officially announced yet.

They sound bitter. This was because all the shiit EPL teams got knocked out early.

Are they going to pretend it doesn't exist now like they do with the FA Cup and Europa League? Won't make their annual snooze-fest of whether Arsenal make the top 4 or not very exciting if they ignore the CL.
