453k for Brugge v Man United on BT Sport Europe yesterday but the vast majority I assume watching on BT Sport Showcase which was on freeview so all in all, you'd probably expect close to 2 million viewers combined with a lot of people watching on Showcase.

I could well be wrong but I'd be surprised if the Showcase number is that big - are the general public really aware that the channel exists yet?

It wouldn't have got near 1m viewers even including Showcase.

Just checked on the Ratings Thread and they are saying on there that the BT Sport Showcase rating didn't make the Digital Top 10 - which implies the Showcase rating is below 401k.

Now I would urge caution here - Showcase is a new channel and I just wonder if it has maybe been omitted from the overnight reporting - so I suspect we'll have to wait and see the official rating.

Sky's Capital One Cup last night got 426k.

Whatever the Showcase rating I suspect it isn't that strong given Sky's Capital One Cup rating and a quick scan on the Ratings Thread shows Bake Off did pretty well so it doesn't look as if "general entertainment" programming has been dented by the Showcase offering.

That said, the BTS Europe rating is 200k lower than the Man U 1st leg so one would think at least some of that has gone over to Showcase - however the Capital One did provide competition and rate pretty well - helped by it being a very exciting game in contrast to the Man U game.

Cheers mlt11, this is really interesting.
Surely it would be a bit strange for the FTA channel to get less viewers than the pay channel?

Not if the deliberate lack of promotion made a lot of viewers unaware of both the channel itself and the fact it was showing the match.

Question here, but is BT Sport Showcase actually BARB reported?

A lot of people are sick of seeing 'new channels found' every day they switch the TV on. I have turned it off. Every time there is a bit of a lift I get the welsh channels which won't resolve. The only reason I got BTShowcase is cos I tuned it it manually. The picture quality was 'sub standard definition'. I remember tuning to the very edge of the 8mhz bandwidth on analogue and getting better picture quality than some of this garbage that we get now !

Yes - it's on the BARB website - though no top 10 has been reported.

As I said in post 7079 - I think we still have to be cautious - it's possible it's been omitted from the overnight top 10.

I asked on the Ratings Thread what people thought of that possibility but nobody has responded to the point.

From Attentional.

Quote:
“BARB REPORTED CHANNELS
MONDAY, 13TH APRIL 2015
BT Showcase will be BARB reported from 13th April, 2015.

CHANNEL REBRAND
WEDNESDAY, 10TH JUNE 2015
BT Showcase will be rebranded to BT Sport Showcase, 10th June, 2015.”

So now programming has begun, we should get figures.

But has there been any promotion for free matches? Won't pick up many viewers without masses of advertising.

Quick Q - what is the on demand content like?

Looking to catch up on the weekly bundesliga / serie a review programmes - are they available on demand?

Thanks

Success for BT is crap showcase ratings ..means people think they have to pay to watch and CL football.

Presumably that's the total combined peak on BTS Europe and BT Showcase.

If so, the total programme average is likely to be in the region of 700k.

We know the BTS Europe programme average is 453k so that would imply a BT Showcase programme average of approx 250k.

If the above is correct the total audience is only marginally higher than the 1st leg (not on Showcase) - indeed it's very similar to the average of BT's three previous Man Utd games this season - despite none of them being FTA.

Of course this game was less attractive (given the easy win) and faced an exciting Capital One Cup game on Sky - but even so the conclusion has to be that Showcase has only given a pretty modest boost to the audience.

I doubt Nissan will care. They took over as automotive sponsor after the BT deal was done... Ford having said they wouldn't renew without live FTA coverage in the UK.

As long as the increased rights fee covers the loss of sponsorship, which it does, UEFA won't be bothered.

Where do some people get these ideas from that a contract will be just be changed because they don't like the fact that BT have football that used to be free. That's what basically they mean when they hope the sponsors are upset. I suspect they signed the deals and if they don't like it, they don't renew, like Ford didn't.

I can just see F1 moving to BT next, no doubt with the amazing offer from BT of showing 5mins of each each live on Showcase. This of course will be the slot about 8 laps in when it's all settled and just getting ready for the pit stops.

The whole showcase is a farce. BT clearly don't want it and as I suspected from the start they have no interest in promoting that channel. In fairness, you can't blame them either.

Perhaps UEFA are a bit naive if/whfen they put a FTA clause into BT's contract?

If the CL final was on the protected list, the current arrangement would not comply with Ofcom's rules, because it's on the wrong Freeview. Perhaps they assumed Freeview was Freeview.

It seems bizarre that a fair sized minority will not be able to watch the final, which up to now has been on pay and FTA, when perhaps UEFA believe they will.

Why on bt showcase do the graphics not fit in title/action safe?

It's 'UEFA'. I'm not sure why so many people seem to struggle with getting the letters the correct way round.

And their concern with FTA coverage is about sponsorship, not allowing nearly everyone to watch events of national importance. As already said, if BT's rights fee sufficiently offsets the reduction in sponsorship then UEFA won't care.

UEFA couldn't give a ..... They have had a cracking pay day and well now it's up to BT to make their money back.

Remember the next rights will be up for grabs next season sometime so BT will have to bid higher still.

Now if they’d had let Sky (without main transmitter Freeview), Freesat and Freeview Lite viewers see it would have been better!
They shot themselves in the foot.
