It failed to make the top 20 pay TV programmes so we don't know the exact figures yet. As a result it got fewer than 136,000 last night, and fewer than 126,000 on Tuesday.

I think a lot of people would have been watching this show on a secondary device. That's how I normally view it, with my main match on the telly.

I think BT's CL ratings are all very much as would be expected.

We know that last season not one CL game rated in Sky's 40 highest football ratings - CL games just do not rate that highly - unless / until English teams are involved in big knock-out games.

In the group stages there is the (very obvious!) point that two English teams play simultaneously - so the audience gets split. Add together the ratings for the two games last night and you get almost 800,000 (*) - still not brilliant but much more in line (if not a bit better) than what BT might typically get for an attractive PL game.

Other factors:

1) English clubs by and large get through the group stages so there isn't the sense that the group stages are "must see" - certainly not on the early MDs - unless there is a big marquee game.

2) The CL benefits from being in prime-time but that is largely offset by greater terrestrial competition.

Looking forward, the final round of group games really is going to be key on many fronts - not just for the teams themselves, but for English football more broadly (with potentially very significant co-efficient implications) and for BT:

Best case: All 4 English teams qualify - with 3 as group winners

Worst case: Only 1 English team qualifies - as runners-up

(*) We know from previous MDs that the Goals Show is only rating in the tens of thousands - so is not a material factor.

Looking at the league coefficients for 15-16 England is just ahead of Italy for the season which is good. But after next season we lose 2011-12 which was a good year with Chelsea winning the Champions League. That's when our fourth place could come under real threat - but that will be for the 2018-19 season.

You can actually rack up nearly as many coefficient points for a good run in the Europa League as you can for a good run in the Champions League. The problem is that our teams - with the exception of Chelsea in 2012-13 - haven't really done that well in that competition.

Yes - thanks a lot - if you look at the ranking for the 5 years to 2016/17 we are currently behind Italy (but with 1.5 seasons still to go!)

Italy's Europa League teams are looking more convincing than our's this season. As an Arsenal fan I'd like to think we'd take it seriously if we end up in it. Wenger hasn't won a European trophy - he's been runner up three times - so I'm sure he'd give it a good go. But hopefully we'll do the business in Greece!

EDIT: Worth adding, if Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea all ended up in the Europa League with Liverpool and Spurs then BT could get just as good ratings for some head to heads.

Europa League overnights
BTS Europe; Qarabag v Tottenham 307,000
Liverpool v Bordeaux 538,000

BTS 2; Celtic v Ajax 137,000

These figures for BTS Europe will give pretty accurate accounts of the match average as there's minimal pre & post match coverage because they are listed as separate programmes.

Yesterdays Tottenhan Chelsea game didn't even make the top 10 in viewing figures according to ITV Media, so we are talking less than 470k....extremely poor figures, I think one of their lowest all season.

Davis Cup Final (+ F1 Grand Prix) may well have had an effect.

BT's Sat 12.45pm games rarely face any live sport competition that some people would choose in preference (I know they face FL but hardly anyone would choose FL over PL - unless their own FL team was playing).

People out christmas shopping (I was), in the pub. Hungover from Saturday. 12pm on a Sunday really is the graveyard shift

Spurs and Liverpool can do THEMSELVES a favour.

If they do well in the Europa League
Then England will keep a 4th place in CL

This 4th place is the one they are chasing to get into CL

If there are only 3 clubs like Liverpool and Spurs will suffer

If they win it they get a CL place

I know a team will get Europa league place if win it, but does that take 4th place? I seem to think not as Sevilla won it and haven't Spain got 5 teams in CL this season? Barca, 2 x Madrid clubs, Sevilla and Valencia?

It's an extra place.

Plus, you know, its a trophy, which neither Spurs nor Liverpool have had in abundance in recent years.

Should Arsenal drop into the competition I firmly hope we go for it.

If Chelsea drop into Europa it may be their only chance of getting into next seasons CL

If they lose to Porto then almost certainly out of CL

Hadn't thought of that, was thinking our only way in next season would be to win it this year.

BT have picked up the exclusive live rights to a revamped Scottish League Cup from next season.

http://spfl.co.uk/news/article/new-l...mat-announced/

13 games in total, 6 from the group stage and 7 from the knockout rounds.

Can you confirm who has these rights at the moment?

Think it's BBC Scotland?

How many games shown at the moment?

Obviously not the most important competition but still a notable change if it's moving from 100% FTA to 100% Pay.

Also it comes fairly soon after all Scotland EC/WC qualifiers went to Sky whereas BBC Scotland used to show most (if not all?) Scotland away qualifiers live.

It is indeed BBC Scotland, showing four games (one game per round from rounds 3-5 + the final). So yes, a move from 100% free to 100% pay.

BBC Scotland are now left with one Scottish Cup match from rounds 4-7 and whatever early CL/EL qualifiers they can pick up.

Thanks a lot.

I guess it could be said that the situation now mirrors that in England, ie for LIVE rights:

League - all Pay
FA Cup - shared FTA and Pay
League Cup - all Pay

However the difference is that whereas FTA has FA Cup 1st picks in England, Pay has FA Cup 1st picks in Scotland (except the Final is obviously also FTA). FTA also only has 5 FA Cup games in Scotland - compared to 16 in England.

And of course England internationals are all FTA whereas Scotland internationals are all Pay.

So all in all FTA is left in an extremely weak position in Scottish football.

And all at the same time as the SNP is complaining that the BBC doesn't spend enough money in Scotland!
