Mourinho sacked, wonder if this affects BT Sport commitments?

Free rugby later. Interestingly "Sky and Virgin Media will also make it available for all to watch".

Notably unlike the Champions League where only Virgin Media has it available for all their customers to watch and Sky customers must subscribe.

Crafty phrasing to imply that Sky and Virgin decide when BT is shown free to their subscribers rather than BT itself.

Let us not forget some in Premier Rugby were hoping for a FTA partner to show 9 games a season.
Oh wait BT are suggesting at least 9 FTA games.

More interesting is if they got European Club Rugby rights exclusively would they have FTA games? Might help attract sponsors.

Annoys me during the sou v ARS match - the results were emblazoned everywhere with jake blurting them out every 2 mins - I prefer watching motd without knowing the results.

Also commentary team mention the results - sky don't during their SNF coverage. Must be bt trying to ad another thing they do differently than sky

Not true.

If you do not want to know a result you would not watch a live match.

Anyway, the BT Premier League ratings for the festive period are as follows;
Sat 26th - Newcastle v Everton 713,000
Sat 26th - Southampton v Arsenal 884,000
Mon 28th - Man United v Chelsea 1,173,000 (peaking at 1.74million)

Solid.

I know you can't make an comparison between holiday and non-holiday fixtures but the numbers for the 5:30pm Saturday & Monday games show that BT's average PL viewing numbers should increase next season as a result of the time slot change

You would assume so yeah. Sky do pretty decent numbers for their SNF coverage currently.

However particularly unattractive matches on paper will struggle. Sky can afford slightly lesser matches in that timeslot because they have higher subscription numbers. BT may struggle to sell certain games up against high profile light entertainment on the terrestrials. That doesn't impact their current 12.45pm slot quite as much. I know personally speaking that I will only tend to watch the late kick off if it's a big match as I'm often 'footballed out' by that time on a Saturday, either from watching earlier games on TV or coming back from a match.

...and shows that BT is losing a lot by losing the festive fixtures from next year. I always thought that the high figures that BT got for the festive period justified their 'family friendly' and 'free with broadband' slant on their coverage. As in, families would stick on the BT match coverage for big matches over Christmas and thus they would see BT Sport as an important part of their broadband subscription (and thus see BT broadband as worth keeping).

Having said that, with the move into charging for the BT Sport pack (and hardly advertising BT Sport Lite), they are moving away from this model a bit, so perhaps they don't feel the need for the festive fixtures quite so much (it has been mooted that they prioritised the midweek package - which they retained - over the bank holiday package when it came for bidding for the new packages).

The Newcastle-Everton rating doesn't make BT's all-time top 10 for Bank Holiday and midweek rounds, but the other two matches do:

Man City v Liverpool (13/14) - 1,335,000
Man Utd v Tottenham (13/14) - 1,301,000
Tottenham v Chelsea (14/15) - 1,255,000
Man Utd v Chelsea (15/16) - 1,173,000
Arsenal v Man Utd (13/14) - 1,118,000
Liverpool v Tottenham (14/15) - 1,018,000
Liverpool v Everton (13/14) - 909,000
Southampton v Arsenal (15/16) - 884,000
Man Utd v Newcastle (14/15) - 834,000
Tottenham v Man City (13/14) - 767,000

The Man Utd-Chelsea average rating is higher than any weekend game has ever managed for BT, although I'm slightly surprised that it didn't get higher than the three games above it in that list given the high-profile nature of it.

It does appear that BT numbers may be plateauing- bit concerning if so for them.

I'm surprised at low level rating for Man Utd V Chelsea.

I do wonder if Sky regret in hindsight their targeting of BT which meant that BT had a very, very strong run of games in a row during their first season (13/14) that allowed momentum to build towards the Man City V Liverpool and Man U V Spurs ratings.

I suppose for BT, they have three-four big PL games left: Newcastle V Man Utd, Liverpool V Arsenal, Liverpool V Man City and one other (presuming Spurs V Arsenal) which could trouble the top ten list

I know its not in the top 10 historically - but I think Newcastle v Everton getting 713,000 is actually pretty good given the fixture and that it followed a full 3pm fixture list (which would have had a slight negative effect too).

However agree that the United v Chelsea figure is disappointing - would have expected that to smash the records.

straight after a pretty full 3pm set of games and 2 other games happening at the same time, would mean a lot of potential viewers not in the house

When BT saw that fixture in August they'd have been jumping for joy at the thought of two probable title contenders facing off on a BH Xmas evening. However, Chelsea are struggling and United are off the pace, and this IMO made it the least hyped United-Chelsea game for years. The audience numbers reflect this, and BT just got unlucky.

However, Leicester v Man City, which BT will have picked ages ago because they can't use up one of their 2 Liverpool or Arsenal picks this round, has ended up being a plum game for them, so they got lucky there. Swings and roundabouts.

On a side note, this season has proved to me how shallow Chelsea's alleged 'big club status' is. When they've been one of the top dogs their games have been must-see, but the whole thing was built on sand. Once they have started to struggle people have turned them off and lacked a real interest. They still have a ways to go to be a real 'big club' that attract a large TV following when they are not in the title race, in ways that United, Liverpool and Arsenal would certainly do.

Totally agree with this, disappointing for the Man Utd game but for sure if they were in he top 4, which more often they have been, the figures would of reflected this.

Personally looking forward to tonights game a be interesting to see the figures, good old top of the table clash should prove a good game.....hopefully!!!

Why was the Sunday edition of BT Sport's Vanarama Highlights show spoilt by the dreaded 'L' caption? I thought they only used it for repeats, not first-time showings?

I quickly turned it off and watched a recording of Channel 5's 'Football League Tonight' instead!

It appears that BT use the L for everything in HD except live games. They have kindly given us the option of watching everything else full screen in rubbish SD behind the red button.

Watford v Manchester City got 946,000 on SNF on Sky

I thought everything between 12.00am and 6.00am on weekdays and 10.00PM and 6.00am were without the L? Has this changed recently

Perhaps we might now get rid of the horrible L layout.
