They are obviously very good figures for BT Sport - indeed an all time record.

But are they "fantastic"? What would we have expected?

It was available free to every home in the UK - and that fact was pretty well publicised - there were large adverts in many publications.

It was also, obviously, a very big event which a very wide part of the population would have been aware of - unlike most things shown on BT Showcase.

Yet, it rated about one third of the audience it would have got on, say, ITV.

It also actually rated lower than the Capital One Cup Final on Sky - despite that being only available to Sky Sports subscribers - ie slightly under 30% of UK homes.

Although add in an extra 1m plus for youtube as well. Also I think it would have been good for pubs too. I know a lot of people that went to the pub to watch this after 'wrongly' assuming it was not on free to air, most I think would have normally watch at home being a school night. Would be interesting to see how the pubs viewed trade this time compared to other years where UK teams were in the final.

I’d be interested to see the detail on that Youtube figure.

ie Is that an average figure for the audience throughout the whole evening (which would be comparable to conventional TV ratings)?

Or is it just the total number of hits / requests - ie some people may have just watched for a very short period of time (which wouldn’t be at all comparable to conventional TV ratings)?

The match is very similar to ratings for Salford v notts county.

Bt got 1.7m peak from Liverpool v man city in 2013. (Free in bt homes) which probably indicates growth through cl rights, but not massive as I bet showcase viewers were mainly non bt

Did they show the pre match rubbish. Perhaps people switched from the Beeb in the hope they weren't?

They're up at the beginning of July and both Zuffa and BT are in negotiations but they are not exactly buddies right now so who knows

Personally if I was negotiating on behalf of BT then I would play hard ball. Firstly when BT signed the original UFC contract it was including all US TV events and the Traditional US PPVs, months later UFC launches the Fight-Pass, thus part of the prelims and the majority of the European and Asian events were no longer PPV or TV in the US thus not available for BT. That is terrible in my book, but kind of the way that UFC does business, if various reports over the years are to be believed, of course these reports may just be disgruntled people.

We'll never know if BT were aware of the plans for Fight Pass, but given that to begin with BT were plugged 'every live UFC event for the next 3 years', it would appear that they didn't.

Also BT doesn't need UFC, but UFC almost certainly needs BT. Everyone else over the years who have tried to air UFC in the UK (Sky Sports in the early 2000's and in the last 3 years Channel 5 and Sky again - via PickTV) have dropped it (sky sports) or didn't buy in anymore events (Channel 5 & Pick).

And with BT's recently extended and expanded deal with ESPN they will have plenty of overnight live US sport to air.

Having said all this I hope that BT and UFC do make a deal, otherwise UFC will disappear again from the UK (minus the most die-hard of uber fans).

With it being based mainly around whichever of the Premier League rights that a single broadcaster cannot show as similar to Setanta and Espn UK before and with one of two of the "minor" rights deals renewed or up for renewal (WTA, UFC, NHL) I was rereading some Espn America comments from around the time they were closed across Europe in July 2013 and in turn came across this summary of ESPN UK's losses
http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=1714

I thought it was interesting to be reminded of it as the first 3-year cycle of BT's PL rights has just concluded.

Also as with the Copa America and other rights it is not as if rights holders are left with only 2 options for "minor" rights deals.

Interesting article here on the commercial benefits to BT of using YouTube.
"Full terms of the deal have not been disclosed but it’s now understood that Google-owned YouTube will hand BT Sports data on every single viewer – who it already knows will be a Champions League fan, a UK resident, and most likely a non-BT Sport subscriber – which it can then use in a two-pronged marketing attack."

All this from an IP address? I watched the Europa League final on the BT YouTube channel, never entered any of my personal details just clicked play on the video and started steaming the game. The CL final will likely be similiar.

BT Showcase isn't on Sky.

The Champions League Final will be on BT Sport Europe in SD, which will be unscrambled for the game.

It will be cookie-based tracking, although if you're logged in while watching that will provide an additional layer of data collection.

Even if we are very generous and say 1m people watched the YouTube stream (which would take the match average to about 3.6m), it is less than half the audience who watched the same two teams in similar circumstances (extra time) two years ago.

Embarrassing that Sky's coverage has outrated BT's in the past even with ITV showing the game as well (albeit with English involvement in those finals).
