"BT Sport hits subscriber landmark

Date: 13 AUGUST 2013
UK telecommunications company BT has announced that more than one million households have signed up to its new BT Sport pay-television service in its first three months.
BT had previously said that 500,000 customers of its total pay-television base had signed up for BT Sport between May 10 and July 25, with the majority being existing broadband customers.
The one million mark has been reached between May 10, when BT first started taking orders, and August 10. The Guardian newspaper said Setanta, a previous challenger to BSkyB's dominance of the UK pay-television market, took four months to reach the one million mark, though they were all paying customers.
BT Sport is being offered for free with BT broadband. BT said BT Sport’s customer base has a mix of existing BT broadband customers – who have re-contracted their broadband for at least 12 months – and new broadband customers who have been attracted by BT Sport.
John Petter, BT Consumer managing director, said: “We always said that BT Sport would help us retain and attract broadband customers and that is proving to be the case. We are rewarding our customers for their loyalty and the strategy is working. The market needed a new entrant to shake things up and that is precisely what we are doing. It is clear that many customers want BT Sport as well as Sky Sports. The good news for those customers is that they can do exactly that, and save a lot of money by taking our broadband and getting BT Sport for free.”
BT Sport’s content includes 38 exclusively live football matches from the English Premier League, including 18 of the ‘top picks’, for each of the next three seasons. The channels will also show live FA Cup matches for the next five seasons.
Rugby and tennis will also feature prominently with BT Sport showing up to 69 live rugby union games a season from the English Premiership, in a deal spanning the 2013-14 to 2016-17 campaigns, as well as up to 800 hours of live women’s tennis from the WTA Tour under a four-year contract from 2013 to 2016."

The Telegraph article from 31 July 2007 is correct, XL customers got Setanta five days earlier.

Thanks but I think that's just a rehash of yesterday's press release from BT together with a repeat of The Guardian's dubious Setanta figures.

Another BT Sport only got X viewers article, this time unfavourably contrasting the average number of BT Sport viewers with the number who attended the match,

The interesting part is BT's robust response. As well as reiterating that it is only two weeks old it compared its subscriber and viewer figures to Sky's. "Sky Sports allegedly have five times our audience [subscribers] yet they only attracted twice as many viewers to similar Rangers games last season, as well as some top tier classes from the Scottish Premier League," said a spokesman for BT. "That is despite them being around for many years. That simple comparison shows how well we are doing."

Shall we have a little guessing game as to what the rating will be for BT's PL opener this week?

Good idea! I'll open with 800,000 average.

Ha, the training of the BT Sport Spin Doctor has certainly paid off...

900,000 and I think they will be satisfied by that, anything more will be a bonus.

I think they have a good chance because...first game, new channel many will be interested to see how they do and what they have to offer.

Jake Humphrey im sure will be as solid as ever as anchor of what is going to be a highly important role for the channel.

Ian Darke has a very popular following so i doubt to many will be disappointed in commentary.

Micheal Owen has so much to prove and so far hasn't shown much, interesting for me however will be to see how Mark Halsey gets on....as he said last night....im going to be nervous!!

I'm assuming that's your match average prediction? I say that as it's a whopping great build-up on Saturday (as you know I'm sure) and I think it'll start off low at 11:30, steadily growing towards the game.

I'm going to go for a match average of 680,000. That's probably a bit low, but heyho...

And the article contains exactly the same mistake which I referred to in my post yesterday!

Yes, match average. Maybe the competition should close at midnight tonight for fairness in case subsequent info comes in that might alter our predictions?

I wonder if anyone can verify that claim.

Was 24,000 the programme average or the match average? If the peak was 36,000, I think 24,000 looks more likely to be the match average.

Can anyone then confirm that Rangers games on Sky last season had match averages averaging 48,000?

That data won't be on BARB website.

Also note that most of Sky's SPL/SFL games last season clashed with live PL games. The Rangers v Brechin game didn't have any such clash.

It is necessary to be extremely cautious about any claim made by anyone!!!

Agreed. But what's your prediction for average viewing figures for BT Sport's first ever EPL match, Liverpool v Stoke?

Re the above predictions, it will of course make a huge difference whether or not BT Sport is available with VM XL on Saturday.

IF it isn't, I think all of the above guesses are far too high.

IF it isn't on VM XL then my guess for match average is 400,000.

And I must confess that is a lot higher than I expected a few weeks ago when from memory I posted a figure of 200,000 - though that was for the average for weeks 2 and 3 I think.

However the sign-ups are obviously growing very rapidly - if they hit 1m on Sunday then I think it could be near 1.5m by next Saturday.

I also expect a significant novelty value boost to the ratings on Saturday. I would expect Fulham v Arsenal in week 2 to rate lower than Liverpool v Stoke - both as it's a worse game and it won't have the novelty value, even though sign-ups will grow with a further week.

Silly question really but does anyone know what a good figure would be?

Surely it's far to early to gauge what is and what isn't?

The concept of "good" is highly subjective - it could literally mean almost anything!

More from BBC Radio 4 "You and Yours" re BT Sport. Includes:

- "General complaints" re contacting BT

- Comment from BBC reporter (starts at 6 mins 30 seconds into link) saying VM and BT both say no deal done / open to doing deal / talks continue.

Little error during the U21 match tonight. The on screen graphic at the beginning of the second half named the stadium as "Bramill Lane" and as I type they missed a goal as they were on a replay.

EDIT: To be fair it was an error by the keeper and out of the blue

The rugby has been rating pretty well as has shows like Life's a pitch so I would expect an average of around 700,000 and expect this to keep climbing as the season progresses as more people will be signing up.

Do you have any actual ratings for "Life's a Pitch" - I haven't seen any reported and it wasn't in the BARB top 10 for the first week (ie first 4 days).

Clare Balding's show only got 1,200 viewers (no typo) - BangBabes got more viewers.

Just coming back to the Rangers v Brechin rating - worth noting that Partick v Dundee Utd on BT Sport 1 on 2nd August got a programme average of 35,000 - ie significantly higher than Rangers v Brechin got 8 days later.

You'd imagine they'll be even lower on the weekends when they're airing them at the same time as Premier League games.

Leeds v Sheffield Wednesday on Sky at the same time may take a few BT/Sky subscribers away from Liverpool v Stoke.

Two big clubs, although in the Championship.

I'll go for 300,000 average, but even then I think that's a bit high. especially if it's slot, not match.

I still think the first week 'reach' figure is very low, especially as it included FTA launch night.

Surely, those who have signed up/subscribed would have at least checked the channels are working?

Don't you need to tune in for three minutes to register with BARB though? Checking the channels are in action would not take that long.

As for the viewing figures on Liverpool-Stoke, I'll go for an optimistic 550,000.
