My other halfs parents had no idea. They had watched a few things on BT Sport online and I had told them a deal may be around the corner, but they had no idea until I told them this evening that they now have the channel. I'm assuming alot of others were similarly unaware.

I am noticing on Friday night we have the live option of -

Airdrie v Rangers
Dortmund v Werder Bremen
Toulon V Racing Metro

I think this is a tough call for the highest viewers, I would go for the Dortmund game.

I'll go for the rangers game. If you check historical BARB data for ESPN weekly top10.:

Rangers games pulled in 85K
Bundersliga games rarely featured.
TOP14 rugby never featured (Aviva Prem games only averaged 50K)

Having said that, I'd watch Dortmund-Bremen

I think BT should consider using James Richardson more, perhaps on their Monday night edition of BT Sport live. I remember how good Richardson was on Football Matters which is easily my favourite football panel show thing in recent years.

On which note, I think BT might be better doing that review thing at 6 instead of 7. I'd be interested in watching the likes of Neil Warnock and Mark Halsey reflecting on the weekend but clashing it with Monday Night Football means I'm never going to watch it live when there's a Monday game.

I would note that the latter game there:

Toulon V Racing Metro

is a French rugby union game, and Toulon shouldn;t be confused with Toulon SC the French football team of nearly the same name who play also at the Stade Mayol (host of the Toulon tournament missed on Eurosport for the first time since the old king died)

However, if the purpose of the remark was to wonder which of the three football games would get the highest rating such a scenario does play out on Sunday early evening with Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A featuring live across all three channels at the same time. I don't recall which are the games...

Sky + is the simple solution on Friday night for the two BT games although not sure off-hand if Sky are showing something as well?

I believe that no UK broadcasters can show live coverage of 3PM kick offs due to an agreement with the FA, in an effort to prevent falling attendances at league games. Therefore BT or Sky wouldn't have been able to show the Arsenal Villa Game live on Saturday.

You are correct around the 3pm blackout - however, as I believe the above poster was referring to - BT could have chosen the Arsenal game to be shown at 12.45 instead of the Liverpool game.

The first bit's true but, rather like the point about the opening game, fails to note that all the games were originally scheduled for Saturday 3pm and it is then the TV companies who decide which ones to move.

Some people appear to be misunderstanding how the scheduling of games works. Essentially all games start off as 3pm Saturday games. It is then those that are selected for TV that are moved to other slots. So, if Sky or BT Sport had wanted to show Arsenal v Aston Villa they would have selected that game when they made their choices and it would have then been moved to 12.45 or 5.30 on Sat or 1.30 or 4.00 on Sun or 8.00 on Mon.

Neither Sky nor BT Sport wanted to show that game, hence it remained at 3pm.

”

Pedanctic point but it would have only been moved to a Sat slot due to Arsenal's CL involvement.

Whilst in retrospect it could have been moved to the Sunday, Sky wouldn't have wanted to cause confusion by selecting it on the Sunday and then having to move it back a day.

Obviously this is done regularly later in the season but for the opening weekend it would have taken too much explaining in an area already regularly miss reported.

Have to say I was very surprised that BT chose Liverpool v Stoke over Arsenal v Villa........the latter always seemed to be the better game to me and in hindsight I think BT probably wish they had picked the Gooners game now given how things transpired.

Absolutely, Arsenal v Villa was a no-brainer (except to BT) and would have attracted a larger audience IMO because the 'first day' interest would then have extended beyond the small Mersey-Stoke and S Wales areas, to the Midlands, London and the South. Also, the combined fan bases of Arsenal+Villa is probably larger than Liverpool+Stoke, and combined, they had substantially more points last season too.

Choosing Liverpool v Stoke (knowing Swansea v Man U were on Sky) never made any sense to me.

Most of Ireland too would have been a catchment for a Liverpool game over Arsenal V Villa.

I know most people here don't like to admit it or don't want to believe its true but Liverpool do have a very large following in UK and Ireland maybe only bettered by Man Utd.

That may be true, but that's only one of three or more criteria that I mentioned. Taken together, I think the Arsenal match would have attracted a larger audience for BT.

All of the above points may be true - and when I saw the original list it was Arsenal which jumped out at me too - but it may have been for quota flexibility / not picking the same 'big' side in consecutive weeks more than anything else. Arsenal are on this weekend too after all....

The above is also true, I didn't think of that. Bigger fish to fry later in the season and all that. Also, continuing sign-ups to BT Sport and known seasonal variations in audience figures could mean that saving an Arsenal match until later on would be more profitable than using up one of their matches now.

It was almost certainly to do with quotas. They wouldn't have picked the first match just based on the first gameweek's list of games, it would've been based on the entire season. It may be the case that there are more decent Arsenal matches that Sky will likely/certainly pass on than Liverpool ones, so they need to hold them back.

This is what I think happened. Sky have first choice and are always going to pick Manchester United. They picked the Chelsea and Manchester City matches because they have new managers.

BT are left with a choice of Liverpool v Stoke, Arsenal v Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace v Tottenham. (Technically any of the other 4 games could be picked, but were never going to be.)

BT I think choose Liverpool because, Liverpool are the 2nd most rating team in the League, and it would be a while before they can show either of Liverpool or United if they don't select one of them now.

Crystal Palace v Tottenham is then chosen because its a new team from the championship playing one of the big 6 at home.

Anybody know how many serie a matches BT Sport will be showing each week and at what time? I am growing bored of watching Barca and Madrid just thrash every team in La Liga.

Technically Chelsea was the 1st pick, but given that Sky always get the first three picks in (all but two) weekends where they take 1st, it's of little consequence and I'm being pedantic!

This 764,000 which Robbie Savage has also tweeted, is that a more accurate figure for BT's first game?

Think as I said last night if it is the case then they can be pretty pleased with that.
