If I was running BT Sport I'd give James Richardson as broad a role as possible. At the moment he appears to be limited to European football, which is great, but he knows just as much about the Premiership, and he has credibility with even the most cynical football fans. He's knowledgable, likeable, self-deprecating, witty, and doesn't try too hard.
Given BT is presumably throwing millions of pounds into the channels, and football is such a key to its eventual success, why not make him the centrepice of the football coverage? A more likeable version of Richard Keys. |

What other things can be done with the football coverage?
Perhaps refcam - so we can follow the game via the ref (with a cam strapped to his forehead), and also the threat of players abusing the ref being picked up on the microphone might improve behaviour? This could then utilise Mark Halsey better, and even lead to a spin-off 'You are the ref' segment. Also, if the ref is mic'd up, he could talk directly to the studio or the stadium, explain why a decision is given etc...Dugoutcam - a camera in the dugout, see the game as the manager sees it (or even put a camera on each manager, so we would know if Wenger did actually 'see it' this time...). Some of the best action can be the touchline squabbles of the opposing managers... A reporter in with each set of fans - so you'd get a real sense of the atmosphere within the supporters. Player microphones - as used in T20, put a microphone on one player per team, and during a game, in a break in play, the studio team can talk to one of the players and get a real time perspective of what's happening out there. Less obvious studio guests, who might give a different perspective of their love of a particular team (e.g. for Fulham-Arsenal maybe Hugh Laurie and Tom Watt). BTS - make more use of the pitch - recreate the previous week's debatable issues (like Phoenix from the flames from Fantasy Football League back in the day ).Upgrade the pundits - BTS in particular have assembled a less than impressive crew (though hopefully all will develop as it goes on). They could even hire a sports psychologist and see if they can provide a different view on things. Or even one of the European pundits to come on the panel for the PL games, and give a different, more detached perspective? Get into the BT pubs - for the areas where the teams are that week, get into the local BTS friendly pub, and get the views of the very common man - always funny to watch when a goal goes in, the reaction of the fans in these pubs, some go nuts! Get out of the studio, host it from the local mall! So if West Ham are at home, get into Westfield and make an event of it - make it into more of an event perhaps? Alternate commentary streams (this may already be used?). Ref cam (well ref microphone anyway): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX6aKRt4V3Y They are never going to repeat this! Ever. Sky have long since abandoned things like manager cam and player cam but they did do them. A reporter within each set of fans, I couldn't think of anything worst. Player microphones, camaras in dressing rooms, do people really think this would work. Why do I get the impression that we will be watching Manchester City watching Manchester United watching Manchester City! Cams in pubs, that is what happens during the BBC and ITV world cup coverage, hardly a new thing. Alternative commentrys, another thing Sky did and abandoned, they did the fanzone for a few seasons. At the end of the day some people are overthinking this. All we want is to watch the matches, that involves the big green pitch, the ball and the goals. Its as simple as that. As for those saying MOTD needs a "refresh" it really doesn't, although thats on the BBC not BT, I mention it because its related to the same point, the coverage of football doesn't really need to change that much. |

BT should, with the aid of some background trickery, have him doing a paper review at some café in Paris/Milan/Stuttgart with some Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte etc

The European Football Show is superb, by the way. Match highlights of all of the games they showed live over the previous weekend and the goals of the rest from France, Germany, and Italy. For me, this is the most essential programme of the week. I record this and one of the two one-hour Spanish football highlights shows on Sky and that's me sorted for the week. Throw in the Barclay's Premier League Review show, and you're completely up to date.
The big five leagues in about 3.5 hours or less (sans ads). Perfect for the busy European football fan. Archie. |

Apart from the football the schedules are ridiculously thin as far as live sport goes.
I hope they acquire a few more rights moving forward, maybe even take a punt on some sports we don't get to see a lot of. |

Another brilliant Clare Balding show tonight, really intellectual and serious debate in certain parts of the show with John Amoechi a superb guest, and then during the same ahow some great humour and fun elements. A fantastic mix.
I would say BT sport is worth £12 a month for this show alone, that's how good it is. |

Let me understand this. The Times (owned by Rupert murdoch) is negative about BT Sport (unlike Sky Sports, not owned by Rupert Murdoch). Tricky.
The interview below with media commentator Steve Hewlett confirms the reason why BT did the deal with Virgin Media and why they launched BT Sport in the first place, i.e. the encroachment by Sky upon their core business: BT/Virgin Duration: 5 minutes BT has struck a deal, and premium customers at Virgin will get sports channels for free. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01f9kft |

BT Sport Live was on air last Saturday from 3pm to 5.15pm.
But it won't be this Saturday - it has been replaced by: 3pm BT Sport Films 4pm Caribbean PL cricket highlights (5pm Live Bundesliga starts) Per Sale: "BT Sport and Sky have differing views as to why BT’s Saturday football results service has disappeared from the schedules after just a week. Sky believe it’s been dumped because just 8,000 viewers tuned in at the 5pm peak. But BT counter they never intended to go head to head with the cult Soccer Saturday programme hosted by Jeff Stelling and will have live rugby in that slot when the Aviva Premiership starts." Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/art...#ixzz2ckUWyaaO Follow us: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook This seems like a sensible decision - it was obvious that the programme didn't seem at all appropriate last Saturday. Whether BT did really always plan this I wouldn't be so sure - they had someone from Opta there last Saturday so I'm not sure it was always planned to be a one-off. |

BT would not really have a cat in hell's chance to take on Sky at that time with the ever popular Jeff Stelling. BT have done the right thing to certainly save themselves any further embarrassment. |

Should have the Premier League programme on from 11:30 to 15:15 I think. To their credit, good on them for making quick decisions, but the 'flow everything seamlessly' from one programme to another on Saturday appears to have been thrown out the window. |

Again one of the oddities for me - why 75 minutes build-up but only about 20 minutes reaction?

Wonder why the decision was made after one week and when Jeff Stelling was available FTA and averaged over 1m from 3pm?

BT's 3.15pm fixtures for the Aviva Premiership were confirmed some time ago, so I would suggest that a scores service was never planned for the long term.
This assumes that BT are / were planning to have their Sat 3.15pm game on BT Sport 1, which would make sense considering it's their biggest offering after PL / FA Cup / EL. |

Quite unbelievable for what is, essentially, a few blokes chatting about games that you can't see because of some backward FA directive... ![]() Impressive, nonetheless. |

Maybe it'll make them consider making Sky Sports News FTA again?

Yep. I watch the SPL and the rangers games. I have no intrest in rugby union whatsoever I prefer rugby league as its fast pace. Oh and I'm English not Scottish but like Scottish football.

I'd be surprised if the Scottish Football wasn't more popular than the Rugby.
Outside the Old Firm and Edinburgh derbies the ratings for the Aviva Premiership and SPL have been pretty similar, with either able to beat the other on any given week. The Heineken Cup matches featuring top English teams easily beat most Scottish football ones. Hardly surprising though, the population of England is ten times that of Scotland that it has as many rugby union fans as Scotland has football ones. And most English football fans find the Premier League, Football League, Champions League, Europa League is quite enough. As mlt11 often cites, the average viewer of football on Sky only watches 30 matches per season. Scottish football is a pretty low priority for the average sports fans outside Scotland. |
