And the question is nervous investors and major shareholders will not santion an all out bidding war if they feel its not going to give them a return.

So no surprise that BTS1 reach and share were significantly down. |

Short article in yesterday's Times re BT Sport ratings:
- Says audience for first 7 PL games on BTS was 9% lower than ESPN. This is a similar picture to the ratings posted on this thread - see post 2195 on page 88. (Post 2195 shows a slightly larger fall of 13% but figure in article may have been calculated slightly differently - eg they may be using actual match averages which we don't have access to. Post 2195 also only uses the average for the first 6 ESPN games as ESPN had a blank weekend). - Also reports a couple of other specific ratings: Clare Balding Show (10 October) - 8,000 Baker & Kelly (11 October) - 13,000 Article says this was the week when the channels were free to all Freeview and VM customers but I'm not 100% certain if it was free when the above 2 programmes were broadcast. Either way, the figures are obviously not very encouraging. |

The comparison with Sky isn't exactly the best - Sky were the first subscription sports player so were starting from a different place, and secondly BT may be new but they are the successors to a string of failed predecessors following pretty much the same strategy and with similar content and results.
But the rights BT have now are equal to, or slightly better than, any predecessor such as Setanta or ESPN are they not? And crucially they certainly want to bid for more, and have the firepower to do so.Also they have a telecoms/broadband infrastructure in place that the others didn't have. If BT wins 2 more decent packages, say some Champions league plus some more rugby and/or cricket things could get more interesting. As others have said though a lot of rights are not due to come up for a few more years. |

Would the 9% drop in comparable ratings be explained by the lack of free multi room on Sky boxes ?

By far the biggest factor is the worse timeslot - that on its own would lead to a fall of far more than 9% - probably in the region of approx 30%. The above is then offset to some degree by the wider availability of BTS - free with BT broadband etc. Game quality will also be a factor going forward but it isn't really a factor in the figures yet - as the first 7 games on BTS aren't of significantly different quality to ESPN. |

This from today's Telegraph Market Report quoting one analyst's concerns as to BT's ability to make good its investment in its TV service and Sport channels. Interesting to note that only around 30% of BT Broadband subscribers have apparently so far taken up the free BT Sport offer.

I'm surprised that BT has not added content like Boxing to their schedules especially the big PPV fights as a way of increasing numbers, maybe it was just the wrong time to add a new channel and people are making do with SKY and not bothering with the new BT channel ?

You have the core PremPlus, Setanta, ESPN customers who sign up, and it appears they're about it. |

....as it was the wrong time for Setanta and ESPN. There just doesn't seem to be great demand for additional pay sports channels.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/m...l-worries.html BT announced they had reached 1m BT Sport sign-ups in the week before the first PL game and the PL (and other) ratings don't suggest very substantial growth since the start of the season. 30% of the 6m BT broadband subscribers would be 1.8m plus non BT broadband paying BT Sport subs would imply well over 2m total BT Sport sign-ups - ie well over double the number reported in the week before the first PL game. |

The rest would be those watching on laptops and tablets who aren't counted by BARB (I don't suppose many connect to TVs and the chances of BARB picking them up with their small panel would be unlikely). BT did recently announce one million downloads of the app. |

Was the expectation that all 3 channels would be unencrypted via Sky - BT Sport 1 seems to be the only one free from 6pm.
BT Sport 2 and ESPN are still encrypted. Perhaps this changes when the current programming blocks end at 7pm? |

Is it until Sunday night it's available free, or just tonight?

How long has the BT Sport logo in the bottom right corner changed from the potentially screen burning colour to a more standard and much better looking grey logo? I was looking through the thread and couldn't find any news about it. I know some people have complained on the forums about it so it seems they are listening!

And I have first-hand experience of it burning into a screen. A computer monitor, no less, which by design is better at coping with static images. Took a good few hours of flashing pixels to get rid of it. |

Enjoyed the coverage of the SPFL last night, pity it was curtailed due to the floodlights packing in.
Not sure about the start to their Premier League coverage - I presume this sort of heavy promotion of video games is not normal? |

BT seems to be supporting the FIFA brand, whilst Sky seem to be supporting the FM brand, (they had Miles on a feature during Soccer AM earlier). Sky v BT, and FM v FIFA, personally, I think Sky backed the winning team there!

Others will know much more about this than me but this free weekend (especialy Palace/Arsenal) has got BT Sport trending worldwide on twitter. Is that sort of significant?
I've looked in on it and the live studio stuff doesn't look like it is for me (like a cross between Going Live/Blue Peter/Saturday kitchen or suchlike and cheap cable sports shows from the past) and I couldn't care less about what they are talking about. Also I don't like their on-screen logo! Plus the portfolio of live sport looks a bit desperate (although what they do have they broadcast with due diligence from what I've noticed). |

It's not about content, it's not about time slots. It's about price.
People can just not afford £12/£15 extra a month in this economic climate. |
