Not sure which weekend you are referring to.

The FA Cup 2nd round is on the weekend of 7/8 Dec and yes - BT has Man Utd v Newcastle that weekend.

The reason why Sky Sports has its own presentation on American Football is simple. Skys auidence maybe new to the game, and sticking with the American feed might not give all the necessary information to any newcomers to the game. A lot of "casual" fans might have watched the game this weekend for instance, because it was from Wembley. Its also true that American TV has more adverts, so they need something to fill in the time.

I only found out that in American Football that: "teams have only 4 attempts to make the 10 yards" from Sky Sports own presenters, and thats one of the most basic things about the game.

Could be a good weekend for BT.

Partly. But surely there are other factors such as frequency of ad breaks?

Also Sky are not cutting anything (much) noticeable from the American feed. The way I understand it is that what they get from the NFL deal is the game feed and nothing much else certainly not much else designed for broadcast. What they get also (thankfully) excludes features such as the bottom line ticker that Fox have on screen during the entirety of the games they broadcast on their US regional sports networks.

Didn't I then say later on in the same post: "Its also true that American TV has more adverts, so they need something to fill in the time."

Yes, you did - and I didn't see it! Don't know how I missed it. My apologies.

It is nothing to do with the NFL specifically, it is how Sky cover all sports. They add their own studio to coverage of any sport they take from elsewhere including cricket and rugby where there are no 'new fans' concerns.

Although as you say the main job the studio does is fill commercial breaks. The league rights would allow Sky to show the half time shows, but the networks own their pre-game shows. So separate rights deals and payments would be required if Sky were to just show a full US feed.

Sky also use their own transatlantic feed to transmit the games which take the backhaul feed out of the stadium. This is why you do not see the tickers as those are added at the respective network centre. It is also why we do not get the in-game highlights (game breaks) so they have to add their own, and why some CBS games do not have the yellow first down line.

All the Fox games have the virtual graphics added on site using sensors mounted on the cameras to map them to the video. CBS only do this for their Nantz and Simms games during the regular season. The other CBS games use a cheaper computerized system that adds it to the game feed at their broadcast centre, so Sky take their feed before these are added.

So because the feed Sky use does not have the half time shows, technically the only things they cut are the opening remarks from the commentators. And everything coming out of breaks, because after nearly twenty years of covering the NFL they still have not learned when to shut up.

Thinking out loud here, but BT have a deal with Goal.com don't they? Perhaps that'll be how it's handled, as their Youtube channel just shows 'outrageous goals from leagues around the World'.

That does seem to be what it is, I didn't realise they had a deal with Goal, but the segment was called "Around the world in 80 seconds" and just showed a few great goals and controversial moments from "anywhere that isn't Spain".

Id be very surprised if BT opted not to screen a game on the final day.
Keeping back a first pick purposely for that is something id be inclined to do and think BT will do the same.

I think the angry reactions BT got last night and still a load more today, they daren't replay the pisspoor excuse for coverage from last night and just screened what everyone wanted in the first place.

Hmm... I wonder where they borrowed that idea from!

The point is that they won't get a first pick, as Sky will almost certainly retain one, and it is Sky's option as to when to take theirs. At best, BT will have a third or fourth choice game depending on how many games Sky have left to show. All of BT's other games will be in exclusive windows, so it is much more useful for them to show a game a different matchday, and use it as one of their remaining blank days.

I can't help feeling that Sunday Night Football - or as they like to call it on the Sky EPG when broadcast as a repeat, The European Football Show - is a prisoner of its own slot.

They have the rights to three leagues, but as there is no Bundesliga match on a Sunday night they are restricted to live matches from Italy and France. That's problematic in two ways. First, Raphael Honigstein is largely redundant. Second, Ligue 1 isn't strong enough to provide too many nights where its offering will be superior to that of Serie A.

Today, I see that the Sky EPG still lists The European Football Show when that show, brilliant as it was, has now been abandoned under cover of darkness. As some will know, that used to go out on Monday nights as a compendium of match highlights and goals over two hours. It had no presentation, just commentary match highlights from the weekend and the goals of the rest. Brilliant.

However, BT, for reasons that they've kept to themselves, have opted to repeat Sunday Night Football in its place, edit that programme, and therefore give us the bizarre sight of James Richardson previewing a game and announcing team news of said game when that game was played the night before!

They could make something of this show if they went for a hybrid approach. That is, more commentary match highlights - not the rubbish music to goals nonsense they show at the moment - and the best of the chat (not team news). At the moment, they're filling the thing up with embarrassing poems from Julien Laurens and hand gestures from Honigstein. I don't know which I find more obscene.

Archie.

yeh i dont understand why they droppe highlights show, but SNF is perfect, yes no bundesliga is a shame but honigstein is still required for the 6.45 show where recaps the goings on/highlights in bundesliga.

i dont think much needs to change at all for the sunday show.

I guess in their defence, a lot of the time the commentators come out of a commercial break by plugging one of the program sponsors or another show on the network. It's quite difficult to get the timing right without having a long pause between the studio and commentary.

Newcastle v Liverpool was BT Sport's highest rated PL game so far - beating Man Utd v Crystal Palace by 16,000. Perhaps not surprising - a Liverpool game, away, and against one of the most attractive sides for TV outside of the big 6.
