Callum v Dexter - who has the lower self-esteem
Jessica_Hamby
02-08-2013
Callum wears his self-hatred like a badge of honour. Dexter hides his behind nice clothes, blag, bravado and pick-up artist bullsh*t but it's obvious he's a mass of insecurities.

It's entertaining but a bit like a fight between two drunk tramps in a car park. They don't really know what they're doing nor why they're doing it but they're sure as hell not going to stop now.

Callum has no self-esteem, Dexter talking about his past life gets on Callums nerves.

Like you said, Callum's "self-hatred"/insecurities are more like a show...to get sympathy. He would reckon himself the most intelligent person in there (lol) and when Dexter said Callum is more academically intelligent but Dexter is more street-wise, Callum wouldn't even give him that one. He has to have ALL the titles, believes himself to be best in every field it would seem.

I think you are right. Callum has a very high opinion of his brains, acting ability and game playing, looks and charm. He just struggles to get others to share that opinion and give him what he thinks is his due. He has such a high opinion of himself that he attributes that lack of regard to various things - snobbery, villainy etc...

Absolutely spot on. It's interesting TV (occasionally...though not often), but they do often strike me as very similar in their crushing insecurities and equally tedious in their own special way.

Not sure about esteem, but Dexter appears to be the most secure. He admits to his flaws and understands with how he may come across and be disliked. And he never got defensive when ostracised, particularly after face-to-face noms.

Callum needs to be liked by everyone. Hence his awkward, chummy and overly "nice" persona he fronts.

And this.

I don't think Dexter is any more abnormally insecure than any normal person, but the constant stick he has got from the house and, now especially, Callum is affecting him.

Callum is very insecure and annoyingly blames his insecurities on the person he has chosen as a scapegoat - Dexter.

Equals loser mentality. He was a saddo in the beginning. Didnt have the confidence to come to the for. All this Mr Nice Guy was to make himself liked as he didnt like himself. He still doesnt but has decided to take it out on Dexter and to a certain extent Charlie.

I disagree. I think Dexter is desperate to be liked. He has said more than once that he doesn't have friends. Imo his problem is that he tries desperately hard to make people like him. He'd be better off trying to be likeable and just let people like him if they feel so inclined.

Yeah, I definitely think Callum is projecting his own insecurities onto Dexter. That was especially made apparent during his and Dexter's trash-talking press conference a couple of nights ago. While Dexter generally kept the tone light-hearted (though no doubt he probably believed a lot of the stuff he was saying about Callum), Callum took it oh-so personally. You could just see from the way he dropped the yokely-dokely American accent and genuinely laid into Dexter. It included a lot of spurious claims too. He was essentially saying that his snobby attitude (which I can't see myself; it's far more apparent with Gina) was being used against him personally to denigrate his family and his entire social class. Weird.

It's really a shame. I want to like Callum, I really do. But he makes it far too difficult with his flip-flop personality and his cringiness. Maybe, like Daley, the BB house isn't the best place for him. He's clearly got issues and is plainly starting to crack in there. I know Hazel is 100% going to be out on her arse tonight, but at the moment, I slightly want Callum to go more.
