The way I understand it: if you want to keep the player after his contract with your team has finished you will need to outbid everyone else that wants him

IE lots of star players are getting released at October , I will be open to offers.

Potentially depending on how season's program that actually sorts this out works. I think since 4 Arsenal defenders have already been bought Vermaelen will stay a free agent until the transfer window opens despite being the highest value Arsenal defender but I'm not certain.

It dont matter as you only have that player until his contract runs out, its going to be difficult to keep your best players.
