Why? My mother threw herself downstairs when she found out she was expecting me.

I'm lucky to have had a wonderful mum. I was an only as well but only as poor mum lost three others She always appreciated everything I did for her, I was blessed to have her as long as I did!
You are lucky.

My father doted on me and that didn’t improve the situation. He died almost 40 years ago.

I lost my dad young too, he didn't dote on me but he tolerated me with reasonable grace, as I wasn't a boy but Mum doted on me

Maybe if I’d been a boy my Mum would have like me and my Dad not. Don’t think that’s the case though because my daughter makes excuses for her but my son really can’t stand her.

Gemo I've said it before, & I'll say it again, your mother is a bitch!

It won't matter what you do for her she'll never appreciate it. You need to accept she's never going to change, & stop letting her affect you. You have a good husband & a lovely extended family, concentrate on them rather than fretting about an old harpy who you'll never ever please!

Morning wee thready, only 5 more sleeps.

You would end up driving yourself mad if you keep letting her get to you. Not everyone has an idyllic childhood or a good relationship with their parents. That isn't the fault of the child, the blame lies entirely with the parent, & unfortunately some people just aren't cut out for parenthood. *hugs*
