Dermot's white wrist band
tough_ref
23-01-2005
Can anyone tell me what the white wrist band that Dermot is wearing symbolises?

At first I thought it was just some sort of security thing on CBBLB/CBB.

Then I saw someone on another show wearing one. Then I saw the lead singer of Keane wearing one.

My other half saucily suggested it could be a replacement for the old hankercheif colours of days and it may represent closet boys.

And then lo and behold, if Chris Parker wasn't wearing one on CBBLB today. Oh how we laughed!

Anyway, can anyone tell me the real reason for them?

I saw a few on the tsunami concert last night - I presumed they were in support of the fund (like the armstrong ones)...?

Just looked on eBay and the white ones for sale are mostly MAKE POVERTY HISTORY ones, so probably that. There are a few livestong white ones but they are "rare!"

i believe its to do with supporting different causes, for instance there is a pink or yellow one for Breast Cancer, i think, and the white one is for 'Make Poverty History'. Its all to make people aware of the problem, and for people to donate money! great cause! hope that helps!

SCHIFFER LAUNCHES POVERTY AWARENESS WRISTBAND

German supermodel CLAUDIA SCHIFFER is lending her support to a campaign that aims to wipe out poverty in Africa.

Schiffer, who lives in Britain with her film director husband MATTHEW VAUGHN, yesterday (09NOV04) launched a white wristband that symbolises the fight to end Third World debt.
Meeting with UK Chancellor GORDON BROWN in London to kick off the Make Poverty History (corr) campaign, Schiffer is the first celebrity to wear the wristband.

In a few of the shows, maybe the first one davina was wearing one on her arm. As far as I am aware the white band symbolises your support for the people caught up in the Tsunami.

To be honest I doubt Claudia is doing it for pure altruistic reasons.

As long as it helps who cares. And as for Caprice, you always have to strike the balance between pure greed and neccessities of the world we live in. In seven years time she is as old as BN, so she has to plan for the future of fading income.

Are there different kinds of these? I ask because the 4 people I have seen wearing them, the seem to be made of rubber/soft plastic, particularily Dermot's.

His seemed rigid, more like a ladies bangle.

Are they the same thing or......well I don't know or what.

I had mentioned Caprice as she and Claudia are meant to be good friends.

Yes; they have them in my local Oxfam in Rochdale.

Or you can always make your own. I don't think that they are being sold necessarily to raise funds. It is the symbolism of as many people as possible wearing them to show that they support the campaign.

There are two types of the white Poverty bands. There is the cloth ones which are available from the above link or through Oxfam shops and there are the silicon bands (like Dermot's) which are available from Here .

They are out of stock today, but they have been quite quick to get new ones in, so best look again tomorrow or Tuesday. Both types are £1.
