BEZ WENT BROKE PAYING FRIEND'S MORTGAGE Jan 23 2005

Danielle Lawler

BIG-hearted Bez is broke - because he has been helping an elderly neighbour with her mortgage repayments.

The ex-Happy Mondays dancer stopped 84-year-old Edith Jones from being made homeless by paying the monthly bill.

They became friendly when he moved into a house on the same street in Hadfield, Derbys, 10 years ago. She looked after his pets when he was away and they even spent Christmases together.

She started to fall behind with the mortgage repayments after her husband Arthur died on Christmas Day 2003. When he heard about Edith's plight, Bez stepped in and stumped up with his own money. A friend said: "Bez and Edith are extremely close and have always looked after each other over the years. He might not have had much money himself, but there was no way he could allow her to struggle once Arthur had died."

Bez also showed his soft spot for seniors in the Big Brother house when he slated Jeremy for shouting at Brigitte Nielsen's ex-mum-in-law Jackie Stallone. He said: "I hate people being horrible to old people - you should have more respect."

Last night the remaining housemates were given musical instruments and told to prepare a tune for their departure

Good on him ...

Banks suck and bankers should be locked up. Surely there should be a law preventing the greedy pigs kicking out old people.

Well that just earned him a few votes from me. Well done lad.

It's good to see at least one person in that house isn't being fake.

How can an 84 year old still have a mortgage? I thought mortgages were only available up to retirement age.

This whiffs of a last minute push for Bez votes - but if indeed it is true - as I'm sure everything in the Sunday Mirror is , then yes indeed he is a wonderful human being....

Sheesh, next they'll be telling us he dived into a canal to rescue drowning kittens...

They could have remortgaged it, they could have taken loans out for necessary repairs, or just to live on, there are many ways that people can extend the mortgage, for most people their home is the only collateral they will ever have.

Many elderly people in this country are putting themselves in debt in order to pay for care for their own elderly relatives and partners. The way we treat our elderly in this country is an absolute disgrace

Under the Right to Buy council schemes lots of people took out mortgages that would go well into their retirement. My in laws have just finished paying their mortgage off at the ages of 75 and 79.

I am sure that if a bank was going to lend elderly people money for a remortgage or whatever purpose i am sure they would have to have a life policy in place to make sure the mortgage/loan was paid off if one of them died.

The same rules apply to remortgages - up to retirement age. My home is the only collateral I have. If I get desperate enough I'll do a Richard Hillman/Emily Bishop....minus the crowbar
