I don't really know him but in the interview today, he just didn't resonate as The Doctor for me.
I'll give him a go of course with the hope he will impress me. I know I didn't want Donna as a companion with Tennant but after I started watching her, she fast became my favourite.
So maybe he'll be OK (fingers crossed!)
My reservations are probably due to the fact that I see the Doctor as being quirky but cool. And Peter Capaldi does seem like he could be quirky but not cool.
I'm most concerned about this, especially with The Three Musketeers and his rather extensive other credentials. How long is it until something clashes and he bails?
I guess longer than David or Matt, cause they have gone for a older actor, who has been on other stuff, and may see this as a pinancle, while David and Matt, saw it as a stepping stone onto other stuff.

Viewing figures may well drop, but not significantly, and the viewers who will stop watching are likely to be ones the show is better off without anyhow.

I think they all only sign a series at a time. I think he might do a decent stint, he seems like a both a safe pair of hands and a deliberate attempt to make older as cool as younger.

I'm pretty sure Matt signed a three series contract initially. Means they don't have to pay them so much once they become popular. I might be wrong.
I am hoping this one will last a good few years. Because they've picked an older actor, who's 'been around the block' it could mean he wont be so eager to move on to other roles so much. The problem with getting younger guys in is they can be quite relatively unknown to begin with, then if they are any good they get snapped up to play other roles. plus they will be ambitious to move on to 'bigger roles' themselves. With Peter Capaldi he's 'been there and done it' already. He doesn't need to prove himself or line up that next big role, and might just want to do the best he can with this role for as long as he can do it. Hopefully it means he may not want to do too much other stuff at the same time too and will throw himself into making as much as he can (that's what I'm hoping anyway so we get a return to more episodes per year ).
So here's to wishing Peter a good start in the role. Hopefully everyone will give him a chance to get into the role too and not just dismiss him because he isn't who they wanted.
