I'd like to say maybe longer than 3 years as he does half get through these regenerations quick! if not and he decides to leave after a series or two give him a story to sort the 13 lives out and then make sure the next stays longer for fear of execution by Dalek.

Smith & Tennant! All these producers these days think people wont watch the series if a older actor is in the lead, that the public is only into the young blood.

Hes a thousand year time lord FFS not a child!

He gets through them quickly by our standards but I'm certain Eleven has had the longest lifespan bar the First Doctor.

I don't think the splits were down to Matt though I think it was Moffat. I'm hoping he's got himself together now and we get full series from now on. He's got Sherlock out of him system for a couple more years AND he's got to get the audience affiliated with a new Doctor in series eight so we can be 99% certain it will air without a break. However, it does look like it won't air until next August. That's about right though, we met Matt a year before his introduction. If they film the Christmas special before November they can start series eight in January.

The BBC commissions and schedules its programmes, it's what they do.

But doesn't evidence point to Moffat asking for the splits too? I know part of it was the BBC wanting to save on the budget, but I'm sure we got wind of Moffat struggling to keep on top of everything at one point. What I read may have been wrong though.

It's a positive thread though. It's not people wanting him to go, it's people wanting to know how long he will be in it (and most hoping a while) and wanting to be sure we'll get full series again now.

Ultimately, it's the BBC's call. He may have suggested the split, but the responsibility lies with them. They can take the series off the air until 2014 or air the 50th special next week, Moffat has no authority on the matter.

But not very surprising, this is the Digital Spy forum after all. From now until Peter's first episode there will be whining & moaning before he's even appeared on screen as The Doctor.

Moff seems to forget the reason America have season splits is because they are making 20 - 40 episodes a series. Its not the same as a 13 episode series.

I know it is and I'm dissing anyone but I just think we should enjoy having a New Doctor and just enjoy speculating about what he can bring to the role rather than kicking him out of the door just seconds after he's arrived. It's like me getting a new job and thinking when I'm gonna leave before I even started. Just doesn't seem right!

Tell me about it, and as with Matt Smith, give it one year and those same people will think the sun shines out of his backside.

He is going to be 56 next year in April, before the next Series even starts. I give no more than 3 series before he departs, particularly with the way the BBC splits the series.

Walking dead has a split and a series of that is not much longer than who

I thought a lot of the American shows had splits because they had a Christmas special in the middle and some weeks off either side. And more recently, a lot of them wedged a break in there, no matter when it was, due to the financial crash and budget crunching. Just what I thought.

I'd think that's because they want to start it in the Fall season but don't want it right up to Christmas. Hence half the series follows in February.

He will do 1-2 years I think.

With Peter Capaldi he's 'been there and done it' already. He doesn't need to prove himself or line up that next big role, and might just want to do the best he can with this role for as long as he can do it. Hopefully it means he may not want to do too much other stuff at the same time too and will throw himself into making as much as he can (that's what I'm hoping anyway so we get a return to more episodes per year ).

So here's to wishing Peter a good start in the role. Hopefully everyone will give him a chance to get into the role too and not just dismiss him because he isn't who they wanted.

3 series minimum as per tradition

With regards to splits - assuming the Three Muskateers show is a success, I reckon we may be seeing the end of the splits, if only because Capaldi won't be able to f*** about his other employers - surely a goodthing.

Not necessarily. We don't know how long the Eighth Doctor was around, do we?
