Each to their own. I still reserve the right to roll my eyes at silly comments about Capaldis suitability for the role and people who still can't let Tennant go. Though people are right they are a minority.
And I don't care how someone watches Doctor Who. If they watch it then brilliant because it ensures more is made. I was just stating that I think there's a difference between the casual viewer and the true fan. Not that one is better than the other. Just that they're different. That's all I'm saying. Yes. I am more likely to agree with someone who is a bit of an obsessive about the show because you gravitate towards like minds. But that's not to denigrate the more casual viewer. After all I am sure it is fact that the vast majority of the millions who watch the show do just that and then think nothing more of it until the next Saturday. They don't frequent forums or conventions or rewatch a hundred times and cross the days off the calendar until the next episode. And in fact I think that section of the audience is more important to the shows survival and far more vital than the obsessives. We all saw what happened when they were given some degree of control. Disaster. RTD made the show something for everyone and not just a ghettoised nerd fest. Brilliant!
I just always will take a dim view of anyone who judges people on looks and ignores their talent. I always will and it doesn't just apply to Doctor Who. Anything. Its how I was raised and how I wish to be. But I accept such voices are a minority.
I hadn't bothered until this thread reappeared but because of it I found a few 'reaction videos' to the announcement of 12. And I must admit the majority were brilliant. One which stood out was an American girl who one might expect would fit into typical 'fan girl' stereotype. She admitted that when Capaldi was announced she had a 'who the hell is that moment?' but then googled him and found out about his other work and then couldn't wait for the new era. That's the future of Doctor Who right there.”
Just for fun I decided to look at the Peter Capaldi tag n tumblr, which is considered to be the home of the most fangirls. Funnily enough even on there I have actually seen much more posts about fangirls who supposedly complain about Capaldi being ugly/old than actual fangirls who complain about it.
The majority of posts about Capaldi are actually either people noticing that he play a W.H.O. Doctor in World War Z or making fun of how they'd like to see his Doctor to be like Malcom Tucker.
But just for un let's look at a few posts that actually comment on people's feelings on him being the Doctor:
Quote:
“A picture that says: "Peter Capaldi will be such a brilliant Doctor. I love him already!”
Quote:
“Finally got around to watching the videos announcing Peter Capaldi as the new doctor and my excitement has all returned! Gah excited to see him in action.”
Quote:
“A picture that complains about the fangirls: "Giving up on Doctor Who because the new Doctor is older? Pity. At least you still have your Twilight books and One Direction posters.”
Quote:
“this girl at the library kept complaining about Peter Capaldi being the doctor because he’s already been in Doctor Who and how dare they use the same actor more than once”
Quote:
“secretly too excited for peter capaldi”
Quote:
“The new Doctor (Capaldi) doesnt seem so bad. He has a nice head of hair and it looks like he has a quirky sense of humor. Works for me!”
Quote:
“Another picture that complains about the fangirls: "So you're unhappy cause the new Doctor is a bit too old...you probably think that Matt Smith is the 3rd Doctor too."”
Quote:
“To be honest, I still can’t see Peter Capaldi as the new doctor, because in my mind he is still Sid’s dad, sitting in his living room chair pale and dead while Sid just sits there and stares.”
Quote:
“Another lengthy post that complains about the fangirls: "Ok, so I understand there are a large number of fans who are displeased with Capaldi becoming the new Doctor and the only reason i can see is they think he is to old for the role saying things like “The Doctor meant to be someone young” or “‘Peter Capaldi is not attractive” and I am finding it difficult to understand this position...."”
Quote:
“I honestly feel as if Peter Capadili would make a good transition to a female or POC Doctor sometime in the future
I mean, he’s a big change from the last few Doctors we’ve had, in personality, age, and appearance, so perhaps he could be the first step into transitioning into a Doctor unlike any we’ve seen before”
Quote:
“personally i think they jumped the shark with hiring Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor”
Quote:
“Another one that indirectly complains about the fangirls: A pic of Peter and "What do you mean the Doctor must be hot?"”
Quote:
“I just re-watched The Eleventh Hour because they’re replaying the new series leading up to the 50th Anniversary and all the funny bits, the great bits, the part where he puts on the tweed jacket and the bow tie, I’m getting very emotional seeing them and I want to have a little cry.
I’m going to miss Matt as the 11th Doctor. However, I can’t wait for Peter Capaldi.
I’m just going to be sad and excited over here.”
Quote:
“So do you think you'll like Capaldi? Since you are all for Eleven.
uhh that’s actually a topic I don’t really discuss just yet. I mean, I need to see him in costume and how he is. It usually takes me 3 episodes in the new Series to really like the Doctors. (although, I loved Eleven since the beast below)
I am for Eleven because Eleven will always be my doctor. I’ll give Capaldi his chance and we’ll see where it goes but like I said I can’t say I dislike him when he isn’t in costume yet. I don’t dislike because of his age at all its the fact how he will act that will either make me like him or get bored of him. That’s it really”

“Majority of Whovians since Peter Capaldi was announced as 12
Night of reveal: ‘Who the hell is Peter Capaldi?’
Later: watches Thick of It, starts to use artistic profanity, slowly begins to find him attractive
Now: still ships Whoufflé, creates Malcolm!12 RPs, photosets and fanfics, ends every conversation with ‘****ity bye!’”
And a few of my favorite comments that I came across when looking through the tag:
Quote:
“*sees Peter Capaldi in a suit
*faints*”
Quote:
“I sincerely hope Peter's daughter doesn't check his tag here on Tumblr...
Poor love, she’d be traumatized by the thought of us all perverting over her father. I just wish I could say I’m sorry… but I’m really not.”
Quote:
“I love my fellow Capaldians...
We now have a picture of Peter grabbing his junk. Welcome to the fandom, Peter Capaldi. You have NO idea what you’ve let yourself in for XD”
Quote:
“Anyone else find Peter Capaldi incredibly attractive?!
Anyone out there?”
Darn, all these fangirls who will only watch DW because they think Capaldi is attractive and fantasise about him.
