Hi everyone, I just wanted to spread the word of RHD it's a terrible virus. This week I have lost two of my pet bunnies within days of eachother to this horrible virus that I never knew existed until this week
None of my bunnies had any symptoms, they just died quickly. I have six other bunnies now that I have to wait and see if they die or not too, as there's nothing I can do about it, and it's too late to vaccinate them
I just wanted you all to know.

if you have owned rabbits for while it's hard to believe you haven't heard of this, especially as the vaccination for rabbits is now a combi for mxyi and VHD.
I reccommend you get your other ones vacs now....they need protection from mxyi too.
It's a horrible disease and, as you have said, often no symptoms just death, but the vaccine prevents them getting it.

If your vet has not told you about the diseases and/or the vaccine I also suggest you find a different vet. Sadly some vets still don't seem to know much about modern rabbit care.

No, my vets never said anything about vaccinating them when they were all neutured and spayed

I'm sorry you're having to go through this sadness and uncertainty.

Are you in the UK? VHD (RHD) is well known in rabbits and I'm very surprised your vet has never mentioned having them vaccinated against VHD and myxomatosis. Rabbits are, oddly, classed as "exotic pets" in the UK and not all vets are as knowledgeable about them as they should be.

A very good rabbit forum is Rabbits United and all you want to know (and more) about vaccines for myxi and VHD can be found there. You'll probably also be able to get recommendations for a good rabbit vet in your area if you ask.

Fingers crossed that the others will be fine.

hopefully your sons rabbits are vaccinated then..if not find a good vet and ask about it. The combi vacs is good as only 1 injection once a year and protects against both diseases

Phoned the vets today to get my buns vaccinated. They wouldn't let us go today because we didn't have the full amount of money. I told them I'd have money in the bank on Wednesday and that I'd give them my card number but no, they wouldn't let me.
So we're taking them down for the vaccine tomorrow morning. I'm so nervous for tonight. I didn't sleep at all last night. I'm a nervous wreck.

Brilliant site for solid, accurate rabbit info. I learned so much from the stickies and from members when I accidentally acquired my rabbit (a pet who'd escaped from her owners who didn't want her back).

Rabbits are complex but fascinating creatures who - because they are perceived as an easy, low-maintenance pet - usually get really crap, lonely lives. Cross-threading with another recent rabbit topic, I wouldn't dare tell Little Miss that another bunny had beach outing... she'd be there, drumming her nails, demanding the same... probably with a Magnum ice cream thrown in too...

Back on topic:
Hope things are still going well for your buns, Christina. You just need to get them vaccinated as soon as you can - no point in having sleepless nights over it... we just have to do our best for our animals.

Hi, 4 of my buns have been vaccinated this morning and the other 2 are going this afternoon because we didn't have enough carriers.

Umm I just wanted to ask if the vaccine has any side effects and how long does it take to work?

There is a chance of side effects with the new vacs, but less than the old one.
Some signs have been small pustules around the nose and/or eyes like a very mild dose of mxyi..if this happens get bun to the vet as anti biotics or eye cream sorts it out
As with any vaccine some animals may react badly but reports of this with the rabbit vacs have been quite rare.
As always any signs of illness or odd behaviour in your rabbit means they need to see a vet ASAP

I'm so nervous and anxious I don't know what to do with myself.

Roger still isn't really eating by himself. He eats a mint leaf now and again, chews it and spits it out, which makes me think it's his teeth. We told the vet we would have his teeth done as soon as he was protected against RHD and strong again.
My Spot died last Tuesday now and all the bunnies had contact with him, the vet didn't seem to think Spot and Parsnip died from RHD but I don't know. I mean would all have the rabbits died by now as they all wash eachother and play in the garden together?
I don't know if Roger is very depressed because he's been brought indoors and put in a house hutch by himself and he's lost his two closest mates, and had bad teeth or whether he has RHD.

Christina, as I recommended above, join the Rabbits United forum. You're getting some good replies to your posts here but RU is rabbit-central! Your vet doesn't sound that clued up. If she doesn't think they died from RHD what does she think was the cause? Why did she tell you they did die from RHD?

I strongly recommend you post on RU and a) describe exactly what happened with your first two rabbits and b) say what large town you are near (no need to be more specific than that) as members may be able to recommend a good rabbit-vet.

But, most importantly, if you have a rabbit who is not eating, he's in trouble, possibly in pain, and you can't wait a week for the vet to deal with his teeth if she thinks they need doing. Has he had tooth problems before? If he can't eat, his gut will stop working. I'm not experienced with dental problems in rabbits but I know they can lead to abcesses and other problems which can be very serious and painful for the rabbit and expensive to treat.

Or, is he depressed because he's lost his best friends and he's also been brought inside? Can he be with any of your other rabbits or will they fight? Really, go to...

C'mon... what's worse? A couple of sharp replies from people who do have your rabbit's best interests at heart... or not being able to help your rabbit because you're scared to ask questions of knowlegeable people?
