As I say, it seems to be contrary to what others are doing but I am buying an XBox1 as my next console.
I like the launch lineup more, I like Kinect and I think the system is more futureproof, especially if they can tie in with Sky for the TV aspect in the future.
I think, when it comes down to it, there won't be a noticable difference in graphics between the two (much like last gen) and for all the bad press MS got the last few months, I have a hunch Sony were going to do something similar but played their hand second and backtracked before anyone knew. I am also pretty sure I remember their camera was part of the package at the initial reveal yet it was soon dropped to make the price lower.

It was never officially confirmed or anything but the fact the PS Eye made an appearance at the unveiling as well as featured in the teaser pictures released on the run up to E3 suggests that was the case.

I would of actually picked PS4 as my first next-gen console if the X1 games line up wasn't as good as it is and if MS shunned indie devs since i play a lot of indie games. Personally not concerned about the technical differences as there's far too much we don't know yet about both machines and multiplatform games. If John Carmack and Hideo Kojima don't think there's too much difference between them then that's good enough for me.

I'm not a huge fan of Kinect though, I barely use mine and find it virtually useless for gameplay, aside from rail shooters and voice command. I'm willing to give Kinect 2.0 a shot but if there was a bundle without it then I wouldn't be buying it. That's a downside.

Meanwhile, 2D for the majority of the PS3 vs 360 generation "Multiplatform games tend to look better on the Xbox 360 due to superior hardware so that's always the best choice!"

I have nothing to add except that its refreshing to see a person that isn't easily influenced by the majority and who doesn't 'follow the crowd'

Well done. I hope you are happy with your choice whatever it may be come launch day.

I don't think you'll be on your own.

MS got all their bad press just after the reveal and E3, since then they've done a lot of backtracking, I expect a lot of punters will be doing the same over the coming few months.

The Xbox One is more appealing now, don't know if I want to change my mind though.

Congrats, nice to see someone taking an informed decision and buying something they want, not what other people want you to buy.

On the Sky thing, how's that going to work!! will it be a PVR like the "sky box" if so it's going to eat the non replaceable hard drive up in no time!!

Go with your gut, get what you want and ignore what others have to say. I did that this generation when everyone was bigging up the 360 and slagging off the PS3, I moved from Xbox 1 to PS3 and this generation turned out to be one of my favourite so far.

I also did it last generation when I got a Gamecube and Xbox 1 while everyone was saying the PS2 was the best.

OK. I wouldn't want to persuade you otherwise. I'm going to presume you posted because you were interested in discussion.

I like Kinect
I quite like the idea of Kinect, but I am concerned the XBox One version still isn't up to snuff. John Carmack recently gave a talk where he mentioned it being laggy and like a "no-button mouse". I gather it can track your arm but can't track finger-gestures for the equivalent of clicking or tapping. I hope it's not so, and obviously we'll have to wait and see for ourselves, but his comments worried me.

(Then again, if I were buying a PS4 I'd want the camera, and I think the non-gaming aspects of the XBox One are intriguing.)

and I think the system is more futureproof,
How so?

especially if they can tie in with Sky for the TV aspect in the future.
I think it's unlikely that Sky (or VM) would allow Microsoft to control their user experience. Certainly I wouldn't count the hope of that as a reason to buy; not until it actually happens.

I think, when it comes down to it, there won't be a noticable difference in graphics between the two
Agreed. That's another thing John Carmack said. He also more or less said that we've reached the point of diminishing returns on graphics, that we can do pretty much what we need to and that things like poor physics and AI were more of a problem, more likely to break the illusion, than poor graphics.

Interestingly, Sony have also said that the extra power in their GPU is more than is really needed for graphics. So they are agreeing too. However, they believe that their excess GPU power can be used to improve physics and AI. It may take a few years, but personally I think this is more credible than Microsoft's claims about offloading computation to the cloud, because of latency. So for me, the PS4 has better "future proofing".

I have a hunch Sony were going to do something similar but played their hand second and backtracked before anyone knew. I am also pretty sure I remember their camera was part of the package at the initial reveal yet it was soon dropped to make the price lower.
For me, what Sony said about it always being designed to a price-point is very credible, especially as the PS3 was hurt by being over-priced. Dropping the camera at the last minute would surely upset any developers who had been designing their games around it because they had been led to believe every box would have one.

I like the launch lineup more,
The games are the important thing; that kinda over-rides almost everything else.

No, you still need a Sky box, its just that the Xbox One should be able to control it (assuming Sky and MS decide to work together).

In the future, it's possible that Sky will move to a full Online TV service, and the Xbox One could then potentially function as a full-on PVR. But who knows if / when this will actually happen, and even if it does Sky will probably continue to provide their own equipment.

That was the truth though. The difference is I don't believe the X1 is going to suffer a similar fate, I feel it will hold it's own just fine.

But the difference between the PS3 and 360 is very slight.

Indeed that is why when sites do comparisons between versions the visible difference is nearly always down to gamma and colouring rather than anything technical such as AA or draw distances etc.

And that's for real-world performance. The PS3 in theory should out-strip the 360, and does for first party titles, but because of the complexity of the Cell games don't utilise it fully/well enough.

With the Xbox One and PS4 they are pretty much running identical hardware, individual component performance aside.

Both have a AMD Jaguar x86 CPU, both have an AMD GPU.

This, to me, should mean the difference between Xbox One and PS4 will be greater than PS3 and 360 for the simple fact that they share a common architecture, where once one (the PS3) had a complex and hard to code for architecture, they both now are level.

Double the ROPs. Double the CUs. Nearly double the pixel fill rate. 40% greater performance with the potential for even more if Sony also OC like MS.

These aren't small numbers!

I don't believe this is the thread to once again go into one over the specs.

I understand the argument your making but while the components are very similar the actual design architecture is quite different. It's really not as clear cut as comparing the two specification on paper directly.

PS4 is clearly a more vanilla off-the-shelf PC design built for developer simplicity with more powerful on-paper performance, where as the X1 has a much more deliberate and custom approach to it's architecture. It may host lesser components but appears to be designed for maximum efficiency.

The games are what does the talking and in no way is the X1 looking inferior at this point in time from what we have seen (without wishing to cause an argument and just being honest, I'm more impressed with the visuals from the X1 exclusives than I am anything on PS4 side, by some margin). I actually have confidence in Microsoft techs and the design in the console to hold it's own next gen.

John Carmack knows more about these machines than we will ever and he says there's very little to tell them apart from his testing. But I am sure each console will have their own perks and will perhaps excel in a particular area over the other.

Both machines are powerful and I don't believe we will see much between them where multiplatform games are concerned.

So the same as this generation then. As proven by most comparison videos the extent of most differences come down to a few FPS less, a bit more screen tearing, different brightness settings ect. Gone are the days of massively different versions on different formats, most differences this generation are meaningless to anyone other than people trying to score points for their console.

I have played some of the games claimed to be worse on PS3 like Half Life 2 and they are nowhere near as bad as they are made out to be. Its not like the bad old days of porting, even the worse versions are still good and very playable.

Your denial knows no bounds.

I offer cold hard facts, you offer a 'feeling' that games will be fine.

Utter nonsense. Get a grip my friend, get, a, grip.

Show me one thing that shows the Xbox One has taken a 'deliberate and custom approach' to it's architecture, but the PS4 hasn't. They have the same frigging components the only difference is Xbox One has Windows, PS4 runs a BSD variant so Xbox One has DirectX but PS4 has OpenGL - but Sony has provided a DirectX wrapper so that devs can utilise DirectX code.

No one is gonna try to convince the op they are wrong. It's their money and they are spending it on what they think they will like best. Good for them I hope he enjoys his xbox one.

The reason you get so much stick on here is because in your world Microsoft can do no wrong and Sony can do no right. Anything Sony does you put a downer on it yet anything Microsoft does you praise it to high heaven. You don't just voice a difference of opinion on here you try to prove how right you are and how wrong everyone else is.

You're a Microsoft fan and you don't like Sony we get it.

I already said this isn't the thread for this and I'm not interested in yet another argument with you, sorry.

The games are all the proof you need, more than any on-paper theoretical stats. if there was a clear disparity between the hardware as you are suggesting then we'd certainly know about it by now, if not in the games shown at E3 then by a number of multiplatform devs. So there's a reason for that and it's down to the more efficient and custom design of the machine, what else can explain virtual parity? The word is both machines are very close to each other and I'll take someone like Carmacks word over yours.

I've already stressed than I don't actually care for the PS4 comparison anyway as I'm not buying one anytime soon. The fact it's a next-gen leap over the 360 is enough for me, that along with the games already showcased. You want to argue about the technical difference? Save it for when the consoles and the games are released.

No one is gonna try to convince the op they are wrong. It's their money and they are spending it on what they think they will like best. Good for them I hope he enjoys his xbox one.

Who cares if I prefer Microsoft? I'm not asking you to read my comments and take on-board what I say. If you don't like it don't read or reply to it. Also I'm not getting "stick on here" because nothing you or anyone else says bothers me. The way I see it is for whatever reason a bunch of upset Sony fans feel the need to come into the Xbox forum and tell me off for being an Xbox fan. Oh dear.

People give you stick because you are blind to facts. Your counter to arguments against claims you make contain subjection.

You want to talk up the hardware when it suits you, as Ash called you out on, but want to ignore it when it goes against you.

You're even now still disputing that there is any difference in the hardware.

Just accept it. The PS4 is more powerful than the Xbox One. Type those words, and get it out of your system.

32 Render Output Units for PS4. Just 16 for Xbox One.
18 Compute Units for PS4. Just 12 for Xbox One.
1152 shaders (GPU cores) for PS4. Just 768 for Xbox One.

These are all key specifications for a GPU. Given the GPUs are both so similar and both from the same supplier those differences have the potential to be highlighted even more.

This isn't a case of pitting NVIDIA's abilities against AMD's and finding that even though NVIDIA has more of X than AMD, AMD still outperforms it - it is like for like.

If you actually read Carmack's comments he even admitted he hasn't run benchmarks, he said they have similar capabilities which means nothing without context.

"It's almost amazing how close they are in capabilities, how common they are."

Both capable of what? Running his engine? No doubt.
Both capable of what? Using motion controls. For sure.
Both capable of what? Cloud interaction? Of course.

Common? You bet. Both x86 with the same AMD CPU. Both AMD GPUs put together on an APU. Both have 8GB RAM. Both have a 500GB drive.

What you are suggesting is that a Ford Fiesta ST is just as good as a Ferrari California - the maximum performance difference between those is 40%. Just like the two consoles.

If you think that the Ford is still good enough for you then that's swell - but to then ignore or try to down talk the Ferrari to justify your decision is ridiculous.

Lend us a tenner, will you? Obviously someone has money to burn, lol!

In other news, I've seen these arguments since primary school, even been part if a few. Spectrum vs Amstrad vs Commodore. Amiga vs Atari. Nintendo vs Sega. Etc etc... Just buy what you want for your own reasons and walk away. Anyone over 25 still getting into these arguments needs to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror. Anyone younger needs to get it out of their system, I suppose.

History repeating itself? Always. SNES had better specs than the Mega Drive but certainly where I'm from the MD beat the SNES hands down...
