Display until
Why do we have display until dates on certain types of food, seems pretty pointless?

So supermarkets know when to stop displaying them.

Why do we have use by dates?....I'd say that was pretty obvious.

What do you mean why? Its still in the link. Its so staff take them off the shelf and dont continue selling out of date food or food that is only going to be "good" for 2 hours.
It just says it's for the staff, I'm not 2 though so I could work that out for myself. Why? Well why do you need two dates on one product, one for instance that is display until 22nd and next to it, best before the 24th. It's got nothing to do with what you put as the dates are before the best before dates plus not all food has it anyway. |

But display until dates are needed for the good of the customer, so shops dont sell food that needs eating as they leave the store. It adds a legal obligation to remove from the shelf that the customer can complain about. |

Best before dates are irrelevant.

Why would one product have two different dates on it instead of just one being the sell by or best before date. Isn't that just going to create more waste for the shop as they would be throwing away stuff that isn't even out of date.

Ok, ok, I'll start again. Why do we have display until and use by/best before dates on certain types of food, it seems pretty pointless.
I'd say both have a point. |

Because supermarket workers need to know when to stop displaying a product, and consumers as well as supermarket staff need to know when a product stops being at its best for consumption.
I'd say both have a point. Second point, that is what a best before/use by date is for. Why the need for a display until date when all the information you need is already on there and why if you are saying what you are is it not on all products. Isn't it just creating waste as if there was no display until date, yu could potentiall have at least another 24 hours to sell the item. |

You seem to be arguing every reply so why not ask a supermarket?

It adds a legal obligation to remove from the shelf that the customer can complain about. I'm not sure why the OP is being so argumentative when people are posting accurate information about the reason for display until dates but they do have a point that they are a bit pointless when there is already a use by/best before date that both the customer and retailer could use. I have noticed fewer products have display until dates these days. For example the sausages and bacon in my fridge only have the use by date so the supermarket (Tesco in this case) must be using a different method for stock control. |

Actually this isn't correct. The display until date is there purely for the benefit of the retailer and there is no law to say you can't sell the item beyond this date. A complaint to a supermarket about them selling something beyond the display until date would probably be upheld though.

My point, which obviously you got was that display until dates are totally pointless and serve no purpose at all. Infact it could be said that display untill dates are just creating more waste for the shop using them. |
